HTC HD7 pictured in Taiwan

General

This morning, we saw blueprints of what the HTC HD7 would look like. This afternoon, we get to see the handset in real images. Taiwanese forum mobile01.com has posted several images of the HD7 Windows Phone 7 device. The handset has the very familiar HTC form, kickstand (albeit not where we were expecting), and super-thin bezel. We’ve got a few more shots of the device after the break.

I don’t know why people are saying this is not going to be successful for Microsoft. Do I need to remind you all that this is the same company that bought Danger (SideKick) and put huge money behind the Kin line of products and services? This company knows what they are doing in the mobile space. They will put hundreds of millions if not a billion plus into marketing this platform and it will do what it was designed to do………. Okay, I can’t continue, there is just too much else out there right now. RIM has their customers and for the most part keep proving they are going nowhere. Android gets ported to a new phone every three days or so and Apple continues to sell out of iPhone 4′s as they are delivered to stores. There is just not enough space for WP7. The real way for Microsoft to make this work is sign exclusive deals with phone manufacturers and pay them to not sell competing products. That’s what I would do.

I dunno, I think what Microsoft has done here is instead of trying to make a revolutionary device in terms of what we use it for, they’re trying to fundamentally change how we use the device, and there is a noticeable difference in terms of user experience w/ WP7 compared to everything else out there. It’s kinda like when htc came up w/ the Sense UI… it didn’t necessarily change what we used our htc devices for, it changed how we used them. WP7 is an evolutionary, maybe revolutionary, step in that aspect.

I can see some of that, the fact is though this is a very crowded space and my point was where is Microsoft going to take their customer base from? Their footprint is quite small in the mobile space (compared to 2006 or so. They have to regain their customer base.

So, are the people (corporations or otherwise) going to switch from RIM? Android? iPhone?

Where does Microsoft gain a user base?

      • serpentor

Where are people going to switch from? Like no one’s switched from iPhone to Android or vise versa. Or like everyone is going to stay with the carrier they have and the phone they have for ever.

I guess no one’s contract is ending anytime soon.

      • Topher86

Yeah, I see where you’re getting at, I think all those ppl who aren’t die hard Apple fans are going to make the switch, possibly those Palm Pre users..those BlackBerry defectors. It’s a huge ‘?’…

        not everyone has smartphones yet

  • 1jaxstate1

If I can get $600 for my iP4, I might try to grab one out of contract. If not, I can’t, because I sold my sold for a $199 upgrade.

It could be a very nice operating system, but I HATE the clunky looking blocks homescreen.

Anyone notice that back says HD3

    • kyle

sadly enough i didn’t notice that until you said it! Guess the name WONT be HD7. LOL

      • Jeff B.

HD3 is the Taiwanese name, it’ll be HD7 in the U.S.

I agree I think the whole Windows 7 layout is aesthetically revolting, and not something I will enjoy using. It looks like it’s pretentiously TRYING to look edgy and cool, which I think is so not cool (like ‘hey guys look we’re cooler than Apple ok? See? See? See?’) and really annoying. I don’t think I’ve had as strong a reaction against a UI design than when I saw the iPhone. Windows 7 as far as it’s been displayed in public is something I think I almost despise.

The hard ware on the other hand is gorgeous, (the black brushed? metal and love the kickstand) though I seriously hope they keep the same width of the original HD2 and don’t try to copy the Droid X in it’s 1/10th thinner design. The wider it is the bigger the software qwerty is, which makes it easier to type with. I’ve owned the Droid X, like it a lot, but wished it had the same width as the HD2 or even Evo.

  • CatatonicBug

It would be nice if they added a slide-out QWERTY like the TP2. I can’t imagine typing emails on a touch-screen phone. Nice phone otherwise, and the added headphone jack is a nice touch.

    • Dominick

I thought the almost the same thing, as it would be nice with a vertical qwerty to keep everything one handed, but having used the Droid X with the nice Smart Keyboard Pro app, I still can do around 40-50 words per minute with it surprisingly enough on the software keyboard. I can do about 70 words per minute on my Samsung i730 with its vertical qwerty but the software qwertys on these 4.3 inch screen are very usable.

While I haven’t had any hands on time with it, I fail to see how MS takes the smart phone world to another level with this operating system.

It’s so pretty…must magnetize self toward HTC…must get rid of iPhone…

  • marK

Waiting on this crop of windows phones before I make my move from the iphone–cannot wait!

  • edoftech

wont this be as labelled on the device htc hd3?

  • SQ

If you notice there are two phones in the picture. I think the small one is the hd3 for Taiwan and the spec. for it is true. The one that’s not picked up is the hd7 that is for the U.S. and have a 4.3 inch screen and the spec’s are not reviled.

    • Mr.Bill

I think theres two phones, but are the same thing, just one is on a steeper angle an makes one or the other look longer or shorter.

Depending on your angle of course.
