BGR Poll: What is your preferred smartphone touchscreen-display size?

General

There are lots of things to consider when choosing a touchscreen smartphone, but perhaps none is more important than screen size. If you are using a full-touchscreen device it is the only way you have to interact with your handset, and even if not… it is still the largest part of the smartphone experience. So we want to know: which smartphone screen size is right in your wheelhouse? Is it a monstrous 5-inch display like that of the Dell Streak? Or maybe something a little more docile like the 3.1-inch window on the Palm Pre. Hit the jump to vote in our poll!

I love my iPhone4, and without a doubt it has the most gorgeous screen on the market. That said, I would love the same resolution at 4″. 4″ is the perfect size. Anything larger is impractical and I certainly can’t go back to less than 3.5″. Apple has my business regardless, but hopefully a dimensional bump hits the market in the next few years.

      * See Galaxy S. Resolution is a bit lower, but the Super AMOLED more than makes up for it.

I’m a fanboy too but I agree with you on the screen size – 4″ minimum please. However I’m also pragmatic and I know full well Apple will not increase the size of their screen for two reasons:

1 – They just did a major redesign of the phone and that is it for three years (based on history AND Apple only makes one model)

2 – Increasing the screen size would, in effect, tell the world HTC and Google were right about how big a screen should be, Stevie will never do that – (remember how pissed he was about having to give away bumpers when “it really wasn’t necessary”)

I originally got an iphone for the screen size because I like to watch movies on my commute. I recently saw the Galaxy and love the size. Not too big but bigger than the iphone screen. Problem is I’ve now spent hundreds on iphone apps that won’t run on any other device. I’m toast.

Correction – Apple makes two models of Iphones: 3.5″ and 9.7″.

And agreed, 4.0″ is perfect. I love the screen on my Galaxy S :)

        one word… … jailbreak
        (or is that two words?)

You obviously have not looked at the Samsung Epic 4G. It is not only superior in OS the the iPhone, but the screen is much better.

@politicalslug . . . oh c’mon, don’t be a sheep! how many of the other contenders with >3.5 inch screens have you really put to the test against the iphone4? sounds like you’ve been brainwashed to bow before almighty iphone.
and this isn’t a case of smartphone envy mind you. i actually purchased an iphone 4 but will not be keeping it. going to give the android market a try this time. and with a plethora of phones to choose from (not just 1) i’m quite looking forward to it. Actually if i had my druthers i’d stick with a nokia which i’ve always enjoyed over the years. but that damn symbian OS just does’t have what it takes to warrant another nokia purchase.
Either way, expand your horizons young man. you shall see that the holy grail of smartphones does not live within the walls of cupertino, california.

Large pockets…in more ways then one.

    • offdayJB

      lol that makes no sense..

the palm pre is good for me i wish it had a bigger screen but still good for watching youtube and movies on it.

  • Jack

I have owned all sizes. The optimal size for a male hand is C – cup, a four inche screen.

    • Steve

You can’t really compare screens to boobs. Sometimes, when a phone is big, it gets annoying. But when boobs are big, it’s never annoying.

      • Mopo

Sure boobs may not get annoying, but they can look nasty when they are too big.

  • phoghat

I want a phone that does EVERYTHING. If hade a screen over 5 inches it wouldn’t be very pocket-able but if it had blue tooth, who cares? I use my iPhone for reading ad gaming and would like a bigger screen.

IMHO, anything bigger than 3.9″ is to be regarded as a mini-tablet and not a smartphone!

    • Artemis

You must have the smallest hands ever…

  • Reusable

Hey, it’s still a phone that you have to hold while you’re having conversations. I have the Incredible, which is about the right size. I’ve seen the 4.3″ version and I think that it’s too big. I’d like to try out a 4″ version….

  • GALAXYDROID

I dont think screens need to be over 4 inches anything above that you might as well get a belt holster for an ipad device or a laptop

  • RJ

The 4′ screen on the Samsung Vibrant is perfect IMO.

  • Jayhammy

I love 3.7″ screen Incredible, but I REALLY like the 4″ screen on the Samsung Galaxy S phones. The 4.3″ on the Droid X is a little too big for my taste and the 3.5″ on the iPhone is too small.

  • joe

I have big hands and bad eyes, so a C-cup or a bit bigger, the 4.3 screen rocks my world.

  • Rob

An iPhone with a 4″ screen would be killer.

  • phone_booger

I’ll vouch for the 4.3″ screen like the HTC Evo; seems like that size is the best of both worlds: Fits my small hands comfortably, and fits well in my back pocket.

  • Addison

    4″ is just about perfect.
Someone make an Android phone with top-of-the-line specs, a really good hardware keyboard, STOCK ANDROID and a 4″ screen of “retina display” quality, and you will have my undying allegiance.

  • I Captivate

4″ is just right! I already have something twice that size that takes up pocket space, especially when I’m holding the “C” cup! BTW, who puts their phone in their back pocket?!

  • JMS

Bigger is better – I’ve been waiting for the Streak to hit Canada, but with the roumors of a smaller iPad, I might try to stretch the life of my ailing old Moto batteries for while longer to see if a smaller iPad will come with voice capability.

  • JMS

I think it’s noteworthy that there all these people who say that the Streak is WAY too big for a phone, but when you look at the graphic for this piece, it’s clear that the Streak’s form factor is hardly any bigger than the Evo (yet it has nearly another inch on the diagonal). Seems like people tend to get caught up in their brand loyalties too easily to be able to have a proper perspective on the facts.

    • JMS

Really? A negative vote on an observation? Really?

  • Britt007

    3.7 or BIGGER is best…

  • Robert

I have a DI and 3.7″ is fine, but 4″ seems to me to be the best of both worlds – not too big to fit in a pocket comfortably (a la EVO or X), but big enough to see everything well.

  • IGOD

big hands, 4.3 is perfect! EVO ALL DAY PUMPKIN TITS! DROIDBOY HAS SPOKEN!

  • HAL9000

First, I think people looking at the options and not having an example phone size to visualize I leading people to pick 4″ because it’s sitting roughly in the middle and it’s a nice even number.

That said, I think it’s funny that android fans claim to want a smaller tablet (than ipad) and a bigger phone (than iPhone). Really, I think it’s more of what’s being hawked onto them by the marketing douchebags trying to differentiate from what apple is offering, combined with just the simple fact that they “prefer” whatever happens to be available without an apple logo. Ridiculous either way.

    I want a 4.5 inch screen hd7….?
