Anssi Vanjoki: Nokia switching to Android would be like peeing your pants for warmth

Humor

Nokia’s executive vice president of mobile solutions, Anssi Vanjoki, let an interesting analogy go when speaking with the Financial Times today. When asked about the possibility of his company switching mobile operating systems from Symbian to Android, Mr. Vanjoki compared the prospective move to Finnish boys who “pee in their pants” during the winter months for warmth; the temporary relief acquired is soon followed by a larger issue. Nokia obviously feels it can differentiate and add value to the mobile experience with Symbian and Meego; a task it presumably would find difficult with Android. Regardless, we salute you Mr. Vanjoki for one of the most epic analogies we’ve heard from an EVP. Also… do Finnish boys really pee their pants in the winter?

Nothing wrong with having multiple OS’s to pick from. The more the merrier I say.

Nokia has every right to push their own mobile OS… but this kind of attitude is only going to result in one reason for peeing his pants: when he sees what this strategic direction is going to do to their stock price.

hahaha true that.. what i got out of this is hes thinking android is only going to be popular for a little while.. we’ll see in a year..

As long as they are being pushed out like cheeseburgers from McDonalds and folks can get em for $1.99 on Amazon or 37 for 1 from T-Mo, I can’t see Android losing its popularity any time soon.

when did Nokia hire Dolf Lundgren?….I must break you.

Nokia is not going to do Android simply because they want to be a player in the services side of things as much as they want to be a manufacturer.

Go to Nokia Beta Lab and it’s easy to see their path. Nokia Music, OVI Contacts, Nokia Messaging, The Ovi Suite of services etc…

I think their resistance to switching to Android or WM is that they want tight integration bewtween their own services and they don’t think they can get it with any other OS but their own whether it be Symbian or it’s replacement MeeGo

The numbers of Symbian dominance, are declining. Android and ios are climbing. With the entrance of win7 and the new marketing of WebOS, I see Symbian getting lost in the mix. So unless Nokia offers more choice on thier handsets, I predict a Doctor will be too late for Nokia’s kidney failure.

Their market share worldwide is still pretty healthy so unless they all of a sudden lose the ability to mass produce low and mid-range phones that are affordable and available to the world outside of the U.S the Dr. won’t need to be called anytime soon.

If Apple or The Android Device Manufacturers really want to cut into Nokias market worldwide, then they are really going to have to make a push in places like India, Indonesia and other emerging markets.

Outside of the U.S it’s more about availability and affordability than it is about this OS or that OS.

Anssi Vanjoki knows that feeling all too well…

You’re an idiot Anssi…I don’t see motorola besting in anything.

I get what he is saying, graphic though it may be. If Nokia abandons their OS aspirations, what really is their competitive advantage? Apple wins because they own the OS and frankly, has the best suite of well-integrated content and hardware supporting it. Nokia would throw themselves into the quagmire of all the handset makers that are vying for Android $’s in the handset market. The only problem is, they are getting creamed right now and their execution in both their OS and hardware integration as of late has been pretty woeful. If they don’t get their act together soon, they will be in big trouble. People talk about Microsoft buying RIMM, but what about a MS/Nokia hookup? Would this make more sense, especially with Elop taking the helm?

I told you Anssi put the Jokey in Vanjoki. Like Punsy McCale from Flapjack.

I heard Anssi Vanjoki does not like young boys to pee in their pants, he prefers it when they use it to provide him with a Golden Shower.
