Verizon launches mobile recovery application for Android, BlackBerry, Palm, and Windows Mobile

General

Remember that Verizon phone recovery service we told you about five days ago? Well… today, Verizon has made it a reality; albeit four days later than predicted. Via a press release, Big Red announced Mobile Recovery, “a web-and phone-based application that can help customers in the event they lose or misplace their phones.” The Mobile Recovery software — which will work on Android, BlackBerry, Palm, and Windows Mobile handsets — can remote lock and remote wipe your device as well as show your phone’s position, via GPS, on a map. The service can also be used to make your phone sound an alarm (which can be especially useful for those times your phone is lost in the couch cushions). The Mobile Recovery application will be available to customers who subscribe to the Total Equipment Coverage (TEC) program that Verizon offers; the TEC service is underwritten by Asurion. Hit the read link for all the details.

Very nice, though they should make it available to ALL customers, not just the ones subscribed to TEC.

That’s for sharing. As usual though we all are aware the sky is blue and that grass is green…

      • WalterSobchak

        OK dude, you are awesome!
        Someone finally gets it!
        Single tear.
        You using swype?

      • DonnyKerabatsos

Yes…. I was. Meant to say THANKS.

  • Mgl

“(which can be especially useful for those times your phone is lost in the couch cushions)” I have gone through that many times lol

  • Jon

Do it this way for only a one-time $6.50 fee:

Sweeeeeet! MORE Verizon news. Praise to the all mighty V.

    • Norm the VZW DROID Expert

My D!CK is so hard for VZW right now!

      • WalterSobchak

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.
This absolutely consumes you, doesn’t it?

      • DonnyKerabatsos

It is indeed. But what do you care about this norm character for?

  • right!

so much for trying to get a new phone via “i lost my phone” excuse

    • WalterSobchak

You can still run that scam. Just make sure GPS is turned off, or turn the phone off altogether. There is always a way to scam insurance companies.
What someone needs to develop though is an app that can turn the phone on. I used to have a Samsung that would turn itself on if there was an alarm. Which is probably more simplistic, but hey I can dream.

      • Paul

Thanks for raising my insurance rates, jackass.

  • Faalkor

    $8 bucks a month…no thanks.

    • Tim

I happily pay the monthly fee to be able to get a new phone no questions asked.

      • Darwin

Verizon will happily take advantage of you by sending you a refurb that may or may not work.

      • WalterSobchak

Asurion send you a new phone. When you warranty, verizon send you a refurbished phone. The two are mutually exclusive.

      • jmk

Asurion doesn’t send you a new phone…they send you a pos refurb that may or may not be anything like the one you had before. I had to file an old lg 8600 and a voyager, and both times the Asurion ones were just…awful. You’d think paying 5/mo plus a deductible would get you a brand new one: alas, it’s not the case. They were actually WORSE than the vz refurbs. I think the vz refurbs are better, but I guess that’s just luck…

      • WalterSobchak

I assumed they were seeing as how my sister got a new phone, my friend got a new one, and I got upgraded to a new incredible.
After doing some research however, I have found that it is indeed a crap shoot whether you will get a new or refurb.
        Sorry for the misinformation. :-(

  • Jeff

I’m with you Faalkor. $8/month is a complete joke. I’m already paying a ridiculous amount for the insurance. I’ll just back my phone up and NEVER put any personal info on it. Verizon can take the $8 and stick it where the sun doesn’t shine.

    • WalterSobchak

The $ you pay for insurance covers it.
For android you can also use “Wheres my droid” its free, but doesn’t include lock and wipe.
I have used it to send the police to get my droid back from a thief’s trailer. Very cool feeling.
Ill use this though since I’m already paying for asurion.

  • menno

Considering it’s Asurion offering the service.

    • Darwin

Considering that Verizon gets about half that $8 a month.

  • Guyaneseman

Jeff if you are paying the Asurion insurance with verizon its covered. You do not have to pay anything else.

  • VZW_Hired_Contractor

Can’t wait to pay Verizon more $$$. They are my favorite and I’d die for them defending their honor.

I am an employee and so proud that I’m also a customer.

I will not hear anyone’s comments portraying my carrier/employer as “less than,” perfect.

    • navi

when will you sarcastic douchebags realize, you are not funny?

  • Darwin

There are plenty of ways to do this without paying the highway robbery $8 a month. Which I can assurion you Verizon gets a major cut of. Plus there are better and cheaper insurance available. Your homeowners insurance would be the first place I would start.

  • WalterSobchak

Man, verizon breeds as much hate as apple now. I finally feel apple users pain. Karma I guess….

    • DonnyKerabatsos

They positioned themselves that way. Just as much as people started to hate Apple for the “app for that” commercials, Verizon went off the deep end with their Map and Droid commercials. That’s what happens when you are on top I suppose. Either way Apple and Verizon are both annoying a F&CK!

  • Jake

If you have an existing phone and did not subscribe to TEC shortly after you purchased the phone, you are now out of luck. You cannot now sign up for TEC to get the Mobile Recovery software.

    • navi

      wow, that sucks.

  • http://www.phoneclaim.com/sprint Yianni

Sprint has already been doing this with their TEP (with Asurion) for $7 a month.

  • Swokrep

Hail to the big red, but yall are lame this is through effing ASSURION NOT THE VZW, TARDS SHIT!

  • SOUTHERN MISS ELITE

There’s a mobile app called Wavesecure that does many of the things this service offers, sans the GPS finding.

But I’m sure that feature will probably be included soon.

There’s options available…just gotta look for ‘em!

    • SOUTHERN MISS ELITE

apologies….i can track it via gps. just never needed to

  • http://www.honestintentiions.com Doug Skinner

Super service idea, and no doubt valuable to 10′s of thousands of device losers every week. I accomplish the same results with apps called lookout anf wavesecure, free on droid marketplace. Be sure to get something for when the battery wears down. I depend on the honesty of strangers with ImHONEST, which works marvelously.

  • Mohammad

bgr won’t let me post comments anymore. what gives?

    • WalterSobchak

That’s so unfair after all of your worthwhile posts like: “what’s android?” “what’s blackberry?” “what’s a sprint?” And “what’s the internet?”
      I’m as angry as you!
      Good riddance.

  • Blrhead

Uh, MobileMe does this for the iPhone and gives you much more for the same price

    • WalterSobchak

No, I’m pretty sure mobile me costs $100per year, then iphone insurance its is $14/month. So no it doesn’t do the same thing.

  • reemo

So since I finally through away my Blackberry that means the alarm will be going off all nite in the dump???

  • burnett

Sprint needs to come with something comparable

  • http://www.phantomberry.net Phantom

ive personally had it on my blackberry storm over a week.Seems to work just as they stated,no known bugs as of yet.

  • corley

myLookout.com already has them beat and its free.

  • TheMeanBean

  • Anonymous
