Fring launches fringOut service, landline and cellular calling on the cheap

General

VoIP company fring has launched a new service dubbed fringOut. As the company’s press release explains, fringOut “enables users to make almost-free international calls to any regular landline or mobile phone throughout hundreds of worldwide destinations, with rates as low as 1¢ a minute.” The company also notes that “fringOut is easy to use and fully-integrated into the familiar fring mobile experience.” If you are interested in seeing how fringOut rates compare to those of Skype or Google Voice, you can view the company’s rate chart here. Currently, the mobile iteration of fringOut is only available for Nokia S60 devices; fring states that the service “will soon be available on iPhone and Android devices.”

Hmm – nearly twice the 18c/min Google charges to call a T-Mobile mobile in the UK at 37.4c/min.

Think I’ll be sticking with Google…

Yep, calling mobiles is a crapshoot with VOIP outside of North America.

I haven’t checked Google’s rates for it yet, but I know that I couldn’t find a better deal than 30c/min for Australian and Swedish mobiles last time I checked.

Tried Fring on Android 2.2 and getting echoes and latency in a lot of calls. They need to drastically improve quality before charging customers for use!

It’s such a crowded market for VOIP on S60 that I don’t see this app-based crap catching on.

I guess if you run the Fring app all the time this could be useful, but now that there’s no Skype video calling available I’ve done my battery the favour of uninstalling Fring and going with Nimbuzz (who have their own app based VOIP service NimbuzzOut that I couldn’t be bothered using just like SkypeOut).

I suppose this could catch on with the nerf platforms, since they don’t have VOIP built in, but I don’t see why anyone on Symbian would choose this over real SIP VOIP.

I’m still using Truphone (from 2c/min + 5c per call) because its indistinguishable from a regular call (caller ID of my phone + the best quality I’ve experienced). I’m going to start using my Gizmo5 account more (from 1c/min but with a US caller ID) as soon as Google voice becomes useful to a Canadian.

But seriously, if your phone doesn’t have VOIP built in by now, you have to wonder why they haven’t caught up to 6 year old Nokias.
