GV Mobile + hits the App Store, finally

Breaking

We have been waiting for this day for a long time. Not just because we love GV Mobile + so much, but because it shows that Apple has finally relaxed some of their App Store policies and will likely start being a bit more competitive with other platforms (hopefully). Now, back to GV Mobile +… it has been approved moments ago, developer Sean Kovacs tells us, and the price is $2.99. It is packed full of features — everything you’d want in a Google Voice native application, and we can’t wait until everyone gets to try it out. So, what are you waiting for? We have direct linked the iTunes app listing for you.

Note: if the link doesn’t work for you immediately, it’s because it literally just hit the App Store servers and is being propagated throughout the world. Just keep trying, ok?

Thanks, Sean!

There are now 2 GV apps in the app store, for about the same price. Which is better?

    • Terrance

I bought the GV Connect app. It’s works fine but I was wondering if I should get the other app.

  • Jarrett

Thanks for the promo code, worked like a charm!!!!

    • Davie Boy

      where’d you get the code?

      • Lance B

I think he or she was being sarcastic.

  • Davie Boy

Can anyone email me a promo code pleaze? thanks

Nice, this is my first time using google voice. It rocks on the iphone4. I like Apple products, but I have to give kudos to google for this one. We trash each other because of phone preference, but in the end, they all work for each other’s benefit. Google apps on Apple is a good example. Great job on the developer too(Sean).

fukc!!! Bought the app and it crashes upon launch.

    • Mark

Try installing it on an iPhone instead of a Droid.

I’m getting a Magic Key Error on my iPhone 4. Any suggestions on how I can get this new app working?

  • TONY

I dont understand why this would be $2.99.

The developer works for Google, but this isn’t an Actual Google Product.

I think I can do fine with the web based version until Google comes out with an actual application, and I am sure it would be free.

If nothing, then I am off to Android Land.

Gv connect seems to be better.

I bought both GV Mobile+ and GV Connect and find the Mobile+ app not ready for prime time. It has a weird call back process to make phone calls. It makes you listen to the Google voice interface (“To place a call, please press 2″) and then you listen to the number you dialed in the app be dialed by the app. This is not the case with Connect or with the Google web app – you tell it to make a call, your phone rings, and the call is placed. No clunky Google voice interface that mobile+ forces you to listen to.

I am surprised that Mobile+ would be less than ready for prime time after all the buzz it received

    I’m sticking with GV Connect.

That is a feature of GV Mobile+. Its called offline dialing. Basically it allows you to use the app even if you dont have data coverage. You can disable it from the settings tab.

    • rOpO

You can replicate Mobile+ app just by simply dialing your own GoogleVoice number (set to fwd to your iphone) and wait for the prompt to say “dial the number you wish to call”.

    • rOpO

Or you can use your web browser to login GoogleVoice website and hit dial from there. Bonus: Your GV webpage can also save all your contact phone numbers, etc etc.

Looking out at Android and iOS from the vantage point of my trusty ole BB 9700 I can’t help but think “Why the fu@k does BlackBerry suck so bad?!”

    • Chris

BB is still the gold standard for bare-bones messaging.

      • SVELTE

That would be cool if it were 2001…

      • Matt

More like the Gold Standard for networks with a very big single point of failure. Their messaging/phones might be easy to use but having a network like theirs is just too unreliable.

  • Gbit

Gv mobile does support a direct instant callback but you have to set it in the app

  • jonathan

After I dial the number, I get the call back from the number I assign my calling device to and all I do is press answer on the iphone and it proceeds to the actual number I called. I don’t need to press anything else. Just one short step, not too bad for me.

  • Zakk

I wonder if it does push sms or I have to either check myself periodically or set fetching interval? I’d 100% buy it if it has push sms

  • Salim

or you could just get an android phone, finally

  • RW

Push support is obviously the most needed and requested feature, but there is a workaround using the prowl iphone app, VoiceGrowl, and a gmail filter. It takes a little time to setup and requires another 2.99 to purchase prowl … but it has been working great for me. You can even configure it so the ‘view’ button on the notification takes you right to the GV Mobile SMS screen.

Here is an overview from lifehacker (written before GV Mobile became available):
    http://lifehacker.com/5360915/google-voice-growl-pushes-sms-alerts-to-your-iphone

Note: While this brings the total investment up to $6, it’s still much cheaper than an AT&T text plan. Also find it is a better solution than the other GV integrations I’ve seen with textfree, textnow, etc.

Darn right. This entire site is Andrew during the week and the obligatory Saturday article by BG. If there were different writers then maybe this site wouldn’t only consist of 80% Verizon 15% Apple and 5% misc.

  • WalterSobchak

Fuck you are a whiny little bitch. Why don’t you address sensible questions asked to you? Oh yeah because you exhibit confirmation bias like every other little whiny bitch on the net. Start your own blog you little douche. Your are like a hippie that backed a non justifiable cause”what about the destruction of itchy algie in the southern algerian ecosystem?”
Stop spamming this site you miserable little terd!

  • Norm from VZW DROID Division

Im going to have to agree with Swagger. Peter Martin and Michael Bettiol haven’t contributed anything and are being honored with their names being placed in the writers section. Not every reader is as careless as Walterrrr or fake Jarrett.

  • Norm

Ok, WTF, someone took my name Norm from VZW DROID Division, which I wear proudly and then posted under my comment. Let this be clear. I am Norm. I work for VZW. I hate Apple. Some times I’m WalterSobchak, some times I’m Norm.

  • WalterSobchak

I hadn’t been norm since like 3 months ago.

  • PAPINYC

@Walterrrrr, Norm, Norm from VZW Droid Division, etc:

I new you suffered from MPD (don’t confuse it with PMS, that’s probably one of your other personalities); just how many do you have? I might be able to help you, have you ever tried hypnosis or shock therapy?
