Research In Motion posts strong Q2, over 12 million BlackBerrys shipped

General

Say what you want about RIM’s hardware and operating system, for the time being they continue to bring home the bacon. Late yesterday, the Canadian mobile giant announced earnings and that a record 12 million BlackBerry smartphones were shipped in Q2 of the company’s fiscal 2011. Here are the highlights:

  • Revenue: $4.62 billion, up 31% year-over-year
  • Earnings per share: $1.46, up 76% year-over-year
  • 12.1 million smartphones shipped in Q2
  • Net income: $796.7 million

“We expect a continuation of this momentum in the third quarter as we extend the rollout of new products including the BlackBerry Torch into additional markets and benefit from heavy promotional activities and increasing customer demand as we head into the holiday buying season,” said Jim Balsillie, the company’s co-CEO. RIM’s stock price rose slightly on new of the strong earnings report (up 2% at time of publishing).

While I still believe Blackberry’s are more suitable for the corporate environment, I’m glad to see that they are still in the game.

Remember, competition drives innovation and helps keep prices low.

  • RIM sucks

BOGO and cheap devices that parents by their kids that want to feel cool is the reason for the sales and revenue comes from businesses. I don’t know who expected RIM to go out of business overnight, but this is just more reason for them to get giving you schmucks the same device over and over. Everyone knows that Android is quickly catching up in market share and once the iPhone is released on more than 1 carrier, game over for RIM.

lol, the rise of Android is going to hurt Apple more than it will hurt RIM, as RIM is a business market phone first, consumer market second, Android and Apple are going to battle for top tier consumer devices.

Besides Apple is on multiple carriers in every other country, and their adoption rate is about the same as the US, so being on multiple carriers in the US, will make a difference but not that much.

    • Silly

“once the iPhone is released on more than 1 carrier, game over for RIM.”

Umm … read Apple’s own annual report.

“The Company distributes iPhone in over 80 countries, through its direct channels, its cellular network carriers’ distribution channels and certain third-party resellers. The Company has signed multi-year agreements with various cellular network carriers authorizing them to distribute and provide cellular network services for iPhones. These agreements are generally not exclusive with a specific carrier, except in the U.S., Germany, Spain, Ireland and certain other countries. ”

    Who gives a shit. Really.

  • Dale

The best phone that I ever had was an employer furnished Nextel BB 8350i ( no camera version ).

Phone,E-mail, Messaging, Direct Connect (individual/group), a serious phone for serious business.

My personal phone is a Tracfone Samsung T301G.
      Works for me !

  • Cell Guy

I personaly would never go back to blackberry after having an android but my manager has tried all the androids we have and calls them “little kid toys”. I dont believe he will ever give up his Blackberry so there is still a market for them.

  • iamajim

ooooohh-did they say expanding the Torch into additional markets?! Cool-I hope they mean Vz; I’d buy in a heartbeat.

    • mangenius

markets, not carriers.. i.e. Canada et al

      • iamajim

        Crap; double crap. You’re right

  • JM

This can’t be US sales…my stores don’t move Blackberry smartphones much at all and customers spend much of their time figuring out how to get rid of the ones they have.

  • Chris

Blackberry phones are for simple minded people. And there cheap. Wtf. Did you expect.
    Android! F.T.W.!!!

    • Topher86

BlackBerries are for simple minded ppl, yet Android and iPhone UI’s are simpler to use….go fig right??

      • Max

If ‘geniuses’ like Paris Hilton and Miley Cyrus can use Blackberries, I’d say you’re in good company.

  • ace

If you look at RIM’s financial results year after year, they have consistently performed. I’m not sure why there are individuals that in recent past that state RIM has or will underperform. The numbers are contrary to these statements.

  • Ben

The conclusion here is that the genius media dudes who tell us what is wrong about some devices and right about others are far from omniscient. Each device is good for somethings and not as good for others – an apple image as a logo does not change this basic fact. GO RIM GO – defy the bloggers – kick some rear end!

  • Jim

I’m not surprised by this news at all. Andorids and iPhones may be shiny, huge and easy to use, but after using BlackBerry for 3 years I won’t be dumping it. It may not have a constellation viewer, magic 8 ball and wifi hotspot added to it. I do like to focus on the people around me every now and then too.

  • Joe

But how can this happen when every phone RIM releases looks the same? That’s what all of the D bag posters on this site are wondering.

  • ICU

Left RIM for Android. Never looked back. But you gotta respect the numbers. Like BG says, everyone (including me) can bitch about the hardware but they must be doing something right. *tips hat*

  • iamajim

World wide BB is really huge; it’s the phone to have in most foreign countries where messaging is more important than anything else.

  • Jason

While I usually have a hard time praising RIM for anything, the are proving that they are not headed down Nokia’s current path yet. Low margin phones and exclusive data features are selling a lot of these phones to people that don’t read these sites. Maybe we are all predicting RIM’s imminent downfall too soon.

  • JM

I would love to understand the reason behind companies reporting results this way. That doesn’t change the fact that RIM offers good productsthat most of us still like.

  • CMC

Say what you will, but nothing does things as quickly and as efficiently as a BlackBerry. Quick messaging, calendar, customized alerting by mail account with filters and priority tagging of messages, and real customization. Not to mention the ability to upgrade and downgrade OS versions as you wish. They don’t do multi-media toy devices very well. What they do well, no one else can even come close to matching.

RIM, if you want to survive you need to:

1: develop NEW hardware and designs
2: Get developers to create apps.
3: Include new features (4G, video chat, multitasking, ect)
4: Make the UI look better
5: Slowly become “cool” and relevant again
    6: ???
    7: Profit (Literally)

    • LOL

      1. New hardware designs? Why? The iPhone hasn’t changed much since the original one.

      2. They do have developers and they develop apps but most BB customers (business people) don’t require/care about flashy apps.

      3. New features such as multitasking? It’s been there for years. 4G and video chat could be interesting though. Higher screen resolution would also be a plus.

      4. User interface is okay: common options are shown by default and advanced options can be accessed using the menu. Themes are also available if you don’t like the original UI.

      5. Irrevelent to the business world. They never intended to be revelant to regular people by the way. It is regular people that thought it would be “cool” to have a BB.

      6. ?

      7. Are you serious? Did you read the press release?

RIM has exceeded expectations , gr8 but lets see how it carries over this in the Q1 2011 with some serious competition coming in with Android and Apple

  • Don
