LG CEO fired due to poor performance in mobile

General

Today, Korean electronics company LG announced that its CEO, Nam Yong, would be stepping down; Mr. Yong was appointed to the position in 2007. Media outlets are reporting that a major factor in the firing was “declining mobile phone sales.” Yong will be succeeded by 59-year old Koo Bon-joon. Currently, Bon-joon is the head of the LG’s trading firm, LG International.

Guess that’s what happens if you don’t succumb to Android quick enough. ANDROID FOREVER! DOWN WITH APPLE!

Doesn’t surprise me that LG is in the shitter when it comes to mobile. Even when I was working in Korea for the SK Group (which includes SK Telecom), the favored handset was made by Samsung. In a vertical so affected by design and form factor, LG just can’t keep up. And this is despite them having their own mobile carrier business.

Their poor performance is due to their crappy phones. I owned 2 LG’s and
    vowed never to own another.

Good riddance. I bought LG Dare because it was supposed to be the “Ultimate iPhone Killer”. My foot. It did not have multi-touch, nor was its 3mp camera any close to iPhone 2mp camera. Plus the screen went down the 13th month i.e. one month after the warranty. Then the refurbished one went down the 4th month i.e. one month after the guarentee. I will never ever purchase an LG phone ever again.

Verizon phones aren’t good examples. That BREW software is total crap on any brand.

  • Sadly its true

LG could cease operations tomorrow, and it would not alter the mobile landscape in the slightest. Hopefully the new CEO new guy can change this.

  • MadSkillz

Not surprised at all. Not one bit.

  • boogalooboy

Blame it on those crappy android handsets.

    • Chut Pata

Neither my LG Voyager, nor my LG Dare were Android. Yet both turned out to be crappy. You must be an Apple Fanboy taking a cheap shot at Android.

      • Just Saying

Either that or he is spending way too much time under Steve’s desk to fully comprehend the Android.

  • Stromson

My first two phones were LG-made dumb phones and they were both tanks. Unfortunately everything they’ve made since the Dare onward seems indicative of their slow decline to irrelevance. Who knows, maybe the new guy can make them competitive again.

Good, their s-class UI was a huge failure, and their recent phones have been garbage. Poor engineering, and phone designs.

  • Norm from VZW DROID Division

LG doesn’t make DROIDS so they suck. Sorry.

    • WalterSobchak

All day and night huh? What did droid do to make you so angry?
Put down the ipad and take a valium.

      • ag

i think you need to read the post again

      • Allen Walker

I think norm doesn’t know what he’s taking about. Only motorola makes droids.. Nobody else. Did you mean they don’t incorporate the droid OS on their handsets?

Where do these people come from? Its beginning to look like half of the new people posting here don’t know android from a hole in the ground..

Have you seen how crappy their smartphones look? Performance or not that guy had to go.

    • Tony

I have the LG Ally. I don’t think it looks “crappy.” It just looks like a phone.

  • wam

Well… competition is always good. I would like to see LG make a good high end Android. I just dont see why they dont. I like Lucky-Goldstar (LG) products

    Life’s Good!

  • Jehu

Quality of phones are just crap…will never buy another LG phone.

  • chris

Not only has every lg phone been a piece of shit for several years now, they’re so over priced that they can’t even trick anyone into buying one. Look at their offering this past year for att. Shine 2 (120 bucks.. Never sold a single one), cu360, incite, etc. Garbage construction, garbage performance, crap all around. How that guy kept a job that long is beyond me. Wondering where the focus groups were to tell them the phones were bad.

Shouldve Given Dan Hesse his LG Android phones this year like he asked for…

  • JM

    LG offers smartphones?

  • phone_booger

Can’t go wrong with a name like Koo Bon-joon. Das Koo!!!

    • Eddie4

      “Koo Bon-joon”? Isn’t he like.. Qui-Gon Jinn’s cousin or someth’in?

  • HabibAKAJohn/Peter/Tom@SprintPOS

It puzzled me why LG never had any relationship with T-Mobile. As far as feature phones go, I prefer LG over Samsung. Better reception & quality.

i don`t think android is lgs savior if they move to android then it will really be apple vs android may be lg shoul team up with nokias meego or symbian, google is not the answer to everything.

  • Stromson

I will say this for LG: I got a chance to play with the LG Fathom tonight (Verizon’s crappy WinMo 6.5 device) and that was probably the best sliding mechanism I’ve ever used. Seriously.

  • Kent

It doesn’t matter even if they switch to Android (which I hear LG will release a bunch of “catchup” smartphones over the next 6 months). If the OS comes down to Android vs. Apple, then the phone makers have to compete on design. To me, the smartphone market will probably look a lot like the PC market in 18 to 24 months, where all the phone makers have to compete on price, while Apple enjoys a slight price premium because their designs are more attractive and they own their OS. Funny how we don’t talk about Palm OS or RIMM anymore… I think they will be relegated to the sidelines with ok, but not dominant market share. Google looks pretty good in my mind…

    Ken Hong here from LG.

Maybe the folks at Boy Genius can’t be bothered with news releases but it was clear that Mr. Nam resigned voluntarily, taking responsibility for the current situation at LG. You can argue all you want about what happened behind the scenes but this headline is speculation at best. Read the other stories and you’ll see that no professional news outlet makes assumptions like BGR, which says something about how seriously BGR takes accuracy.
