Verizon to launch LTE in 30 "NFL cities" by end of 2010

General

eWeek is reporting that Verizon Wireless told executive IT managers that they plan to launch LTE in 30 “NFL cities” by the end of 2010. The quote came from Verizon senior federal sales executive Bernie McMonagle. The executive did not detail which specific cities would be getting Verizon’s 4G service, but he did reiterate that they would be major metropolitan areas and that his company would have the entire country covered in LTE by 2013. Unfortunately, McMonagle also said that LTE smartphones, due to there scarcity, would not be launched in conjunction with the thirty city rollout.

I want that NFL logo as a carpet or rug in my living room. How sweet would that be?

never know I guess….maybe they just throw Vegas in there also, just because……..just because its VEGAS…and one of the faster growing cities in the country:p give me another choice to consider plz..hehe

Get ready for higher cellphone bills!!!

  • GN

thats one thing im really trying consider also…my damn data and phone bill as a whole…ATT is way expensive, as I hear VZ is also. Sprint has some deal I think, if they still do here in Vegas anyway…100$ for all of it, unlimited…T-Mobile is more affordable also and give unlimited plans for around that I think also…few things to consider I guess..

I bet that their LTE User plans are free too, or at least until they have phones.

Does that mean Buffalo will get it?

    • T

I dunno man… it says 30 NFL cities… so 2 are going to be SOL… and with Buffalo’s luck lately, probably the closest they’ll put up a tower and call it an NFL city is going to be Toronto…

Well, consider New York has 2 teams, and that’s only one unnamed city missing out. Oakland and San Fran are so close they may as well be one city.

Looking at the other cities, i have to think its likely Green Bay or Detroit that is skipped. Detroit for its current economic state (but it is quite large), Green Bay because… its just a super small city compared to others on the list (I know, i live close to it). Green Bay is very industrial; the majority of government and businesses in Wisconsin are situated in Milwaukee and Madison. That being said, I’d love for Green Bay to get it since I live so close, but I travel between Chicago and GB so often I’ll likely get a 4g phone in Chicago if I have to.

LTE is a cheaper way to go for carriers. I can see Verizon leaving the prices where they are. LTE is a network upgrade that adds value to existing plans. This may have been the plan all along. Let others low ball price while Verizon builds out a quality 4g network with cash. The others will struggle to catch up and have to raise rates to build out. In the end price is not the reason people will switch. Quality is the reason they will choose VZW.

I believe Verizon has already publicly stated that LTE cost will cost more….could be wrong.

        “LTE data will cost more”

        Off to get more coffee…

      • Rule The Air

Thats what I was saying “More Coffee”

32 NFL teams(New York has 2), rolling out in 30 cities… put it together… may leave out the Lions as well who cares about them?

    • Ray

New York has 3 teams, Buffalo Bills, NY Jets and NY Giants.

      • NFLer

I think he meant the city itself. Buffalo to NYC is over 300 miles away. California has 3 teams, but Oakland to San Francisco is less than 15 miles :)

This is why Sprint is blowing it with their 4G roll out. They’re covering mostly small towns, nothing even on the west coast (yet). I e-mailed them asking about Phoenix (5th biggest US city) and they have no plans for 4G in 2010 and can’t say anything about who’s getting it in 2011. Meanwhile, VZW is going to have LTE here in Phoenix AT LAUNCH! Sprint, you blew it! I would have switched and bought an EVO 4G, but why? You’ve already proved you don’t know how to launch a new network.

Just goes to show you why some people are #1 and some people aren’t…

4G has been available in the northwest for a while…

    • nahnah

Sprint hasnt released 4g in there..cuz phoenix sux

    • jg

…says the guy from the #5 city.

  • Happy Jack

They should leave out S.F & Oakland until the 49ers and Raiders can win a game.

  • Rule The Air

Green Bay might be out on this one.

  • PiperCrab

    NYC FTW!!!!!

    • The Mad Hatter

Speaking of NYC, maybe Verizon should give the Jets their very own network just in case they want to to keep calling in their games like they did on Monday.

      • JC

Jets/Giants both play and practice in New Jersey. So is NJ FTW!

  • Dogfather

Good job Slow-rizon finally getting something new besides that obsolete CDMA crap….now some hate from the fanboys…!!!!!

  • jawman

LTE is going to be bittersweet. Sweet because it’s LTE, bitter because of the tiered data. :(

  • LaToya (AKA Digital Nightmare)

I hope they also launch it in Los Angeles and San Jose, California. They don’t have NFL teams, but they are too large to ignore, especially LA.

  • alexthemartian

I second the last comment, please launch in Los Angeles. We might not be a city with an NFL team (yet), but we are the second-largest NFL TV market in the country.

  • Don Louie

And which one of these markets won’t have WiMax?
