AT&T breaks silence on LTE, launching by mid-2011

General

Today, AT&T’s operations CEO, John Stankey, said that his company would be launching its LTE network by mid-2011 and would cover 70-75 million potential customers. The CEO made this known at the “Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2010 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference” where he was a speaker. Mr. Stankey also noted that AT&T has spent just over $700 million in LTE capital expenditures this year; a figure the company plans to go “far beyond” in 2011. Currently, AT&T is conducting LTE field trials in Baltimore and Dallas.

I’ve been with AT&T for 5 years now. Had VZW before that. I have never regretted the switch. My coverage has been fine, even when I traveled and the speeds have been better than my friends on VZW. So what if they’re maybe 6-months behind VZW in their roll out? I’m sure their LTE will do voice and data, just like their 3G can do voice and data, which is something VZW won’t be able to say (meaning their 3G can’t do voice and data as well). Considering I’ve already hit over 4Mbps down and over 1mbps up, I’m excited to see how fast their LTE will be.

I usually get 1-1.5m down with Sprints EVDO in north east Ohio, THank God i got rid of my ATT iphone (it wasn’t even half that in north east Ohio).

-SPrint and Verizons network both could have handled the traffic the Iphone added to ATT. GSM was not built for high-speed data, compared to the 2 giants in network coverage which would need at least 10xs more users on the network to even see a hicup of “network bog”.

GSM was indeed not built for high-speed data. GSM is 9.6kbps and a worldwide standard for basic voice and sms services. CDMA was also not build for high-speed data either matches same bandwidth.

GPRS/EDGE allows for 46.8-51.2Kbps/280Kbps respectively, while CDMA 1xRTT (also a 2G voice/data connection for Verizon/Sprint/Telus & Bell Mobility) allows for 180Kbps estimated speeds.

When talking about Samsung Galaxy S, HTC verizon smartphones vs iPhone 3GS/4 we’re talking about 3G data speeds: CDMA EV-DO (data ONLY; this is important) allows in excess of 1Mbps down, 1Mbps Up which is a 3G technology. HSPA/HSPA+, UMTS are BASED on CDMA2000 wideband technologies … yet we’re able to carry VOICE & Data simultaneously! This means Voice call or conference call is active, schedule an appointment or accept an email containing an appointment and add it to your Calendar – add invites and have this sync up to Gmail exchange services or to Exchange/Domino/Groupwise server, no waiting for the voice call to end. Conference calls typically are 30-60mins in length.

yes verizon could’ve handled iPhone data better than AT&T; that’s because AT&T brass or engineers have no clue how to properly build a network for data consumption or are just simply TOO CHEAP to spend the money!!!

Good day to all of you gurlies,
I don’t want to comment in this topic but I was compelled to so so.
I live in texas for almost 5 years now from new jersey but I was raised in california ( stayed there till my 20 yrs. Of life).
We’ve used all the big 4 since I was was a kid then my parents still with verizon and me now with tmobile from at&t. Im in my 5th month and I have the nexus one and now the samsung vibrant (rooted with lag fix) then my wife hav the iphone 4 as shes getting the 20% discount from her company.
The reason I ditched at&t is the inconsistent of their 3g with super high latency of 500ms to 3000ms for god sale.
I seen on my vibrant 35ms-150ms the most latency in their hspa+ cities like san antonio, dallas, austin, houston. With consistent speed of 2mbps to 7mbps (i have proof, not just talk like other people here).
I will give my s2000 & 50k for whoever will beat me in those 4 cities in speedtest using my samsung vibrant (all their down town places with full bar signal).
If someone had the guts to do it with me, you can send me an email to sir1honda@ail.com then you can eve bet just 50k without a car.
I’m sick and tired of these liars as I’m always traveling eascoast, westcoast then here in texas, I found out that in all downtown areas with full bar signal, tmobile is the fastest NOW.
Thats why if you feel I’m just boasting tmobile hspa+ try to bet with me, bring your phone fly with me in those 4 big cities then you will find out how super fast tmobile NOW.
Even you have 5mbps download but your latency is 2000ms-up its garbage like at&t. But people saying at&t had 5mbps up is LIARS, show me the proof because we have iphone 4 tested in those 4 cities, super slow.
    Bet with me at&t defenders.
Thanks and god bless you all…

      I have proof of AT&T 3G speed of 5.42Mbps down and 1.6Mbps Upload…. so can i have your S2000?

Also I’m using Apple iPhone 4 with fw 4.1….

    • jjj

who the hell would want an s-2000?

    Follow-up with my message…
Im serious about my bet because fanboys doesnt want to stop and annoyed other people even they are just lying.
I have some typo error as im using my vibrant in a hotel here in el paso, I forgot to include this city but its too far from those 4 cities.
People, dont defend one thing if it will not give you something in return. I will not tell all of you about tmobile super fast internet if I didnt experience it. Im just lucky that I have some spare money to buy stuff I want, thats why i can test those stuff nd tell you the truth not just like those people trolling then just waste their time saying stupid remarks & lie stuff.
We live once not twice, live to the fullest…
    Thanks and god bless you…

i regularly get 7mbps on my iphone with tether. ha.

    • Rizzle

MUUUAAHAHAHAHAHA att had to do this so Verizon won’t make them obsolete. Yeah att will be 4g. But probably with the same covering only like 8% of the US with it and only major cities. Verizon will have 4g but in about mmmmmmmmm 95% of the US will be covered. Plus android market filled with nearly half the apps that apple has since their beginning and considering android has not been out as long as crapple.

    Good day,
I’m back in Austin, Texas – What a great place to live…
I ‘m attending the big texas android barbecue and its super awesome, lots of people from friday till tomorrow-sunday that I never seen to any os for mobile like ios, symbian, windows, etc., a big gathering or what you call party for the android family.
There’s lots of sponsors, delegates from USA them some foreign people. That’s how android is so popular now… I’m still Apple fan but I never seen a party like this just for the ios gathering as big and as great as this one.
We put front facing camera on my vibrant and bought my 12 yrs. old daughter the g2 and give my old but still great g1 to my 10 yrs. old son.
Only my wife is using at&t with iphone 4. But later on she will drop it and told me that she will get the samsung galaxy tab with me (I’m getting one too) and probably wait for the next hspa+ phone in tmobile with front facing camera, she likes the feature of face time with her lady friends.
I will just reply to this fanboys or should I say has still love with at&t & apple… You can get 7mbps in at&t if your tethering,-i believe on that but the latency is super high, research what’s the importance of ping-latency in using the internet-high latency its not good in streaming, playing game console online, voip phone, etc.. Last july when houston switch the hspa+, I was in my aunt house in shadow creek ranch in pearland and we tether my nexus one wirelessly to their laptop & everybody was shocked as we saw a 25.84mbps download (we have picture and recorded it) with 2.5 upload with latency of ONLY 65ms. Then we drive to the main downtown houston to have dinner, we checked the nexus one built in speedtest.net & the result was 6.8mbps with 2.6 mbps upload with latency of 55ms. Never i seen those in at&t wireless for 8 years I’m with them till june this year. But my wife have iphone 4 and I can still borrow and test it but to no avail it can do 2.5mbps till 3 mbps once in a blue moon with latency of 2000ms or more higher, that’s ridiculously so high.
Then to the guy that said you can have my toy car s2000, you can have it if you will beat me in 4 cities of texas, then I will give you 50k with the car,i can do that if you will beat me with much higher download & much better latency test, in the phone and tether in the laptop competition.
We’re in dallas last september 15 & we checked the speedtest on my vibrant and my wifes iphone 4 in downtown with both have full bar signal. It registered 5.5-6.3mbps in 5 tries with latency of 65-85 but my wifes iphone 4 only reach 1.8mbps-3.2mbps with 1200ms-2500ms that’s horrible latency.
I will be happy to have 5mbps with just latency of 40ms-80ms than to have like 10mbps or much higher with latency of 2000ms. So the guy saying at&t its faster than tmobile in dallas is smoking pot because how can a 14.4 hspa by at&t is more faster than 21 hspa+ by tmobile with complete deployment fiber optic backhaul, that’s why they have the lowest latency- ping in any wireless company now. Check the latency of sprint 4g, its starting from 200ms-1500ms still not acceptable for gaming and streaming hd video.
I have proof (recorded in paper and pictures)with other people that will testify, not the lies that other people saying here.
If you want it live testing with your phone and my phone with laptop tethering, I will be happy to accept the challenge and it be cover by android community with fair judgement.
I talked to those people from tmobile who are also sponsor in android festival in austin, they said that they will fire up the 42mbps in 4 big cities of texas by late january or early february next year. Then they will do switch on one by one from the east coast to the westcoast from march, much faster than what LTE can offer because its theoretical of 42mbps will be attainable but not the main bandwidth speed of 150mbps, that will be the main source but only 42mbps will utilize but LTE will utilize only 12-20mbps.
So, for now the fastest 3g network is tmobile in all cities they have 21mbps hspa+, not 14.4mbps like at&t with super high latency.
I think I made some valid argument & if ever I missed something, just tell me as long it real and true with factual support.
Thanks and god bless you all…

I believe everything you say (somewhat) except only the 25mbps on the Nexus One tethered. It’s modem is only 7.2mbps down and 2mbps up. It’s next to impossible to get those speeds on that modem/phone. Post a pic of the speedtest and I will believe you.
