Free* Wi-Fi coming to NYC parks by way of Cablevision and Time Warner

Kind of… Cablevision and Time Warner are spending $10 million to provide WiFi service to over 30 parks in NYC as part of a deal to renew the cable companies’ cable TV franchises. Here is the catch though: internet use over Wi-Fi is free, but it’s limited to up to (3) 10 minute sessions a month, a total of 30 minutes of usage a person. If you want to get your SlingBox on after that, it’s going to cost $0.99/day to access the internet. Not an exorbitant amount of money, but definitely not quite free, either.

    I believe those are the “if you’re not a customer” prices/conditions. “Customer” in this case would also probably include Comcast/Xfinity customers, as most of the LI/TriState area WiFi already does.

      By limiting it to three 10 minute sessions per month without paying, I don’t see how people who live near the area would benefit (unless .99 per day is less then they pay at home and they want to sign in a pay every day).

    “In addition to WiFi, the cable companies agreed to provide more than $30 million in new upgrades to the city’s communications infrastructure and to increase the number of Public, Educational and Government (PEG) Channels available on their systems to 17 from nine.

    Time Warner also agreed to set up 40 community broadband access centers in local neighborhoods, while Cablevision agreed to work with the Department of Education to establish media centers in certain public schools.
