PCMag: Clearwire 4G launch in NYC and LA imminent

General

PCMag is reporting that wireless broadband company Clearwire is beginning to make 4G resources available to customers in New York City and Los Angeles. The report reads, “The company is giving selected “early adopters” dual-mode 3G/4G modems, but warning that 4G isn’t fully built out in either city. Early adopters who want to try Clearwire’s service will pay $35 for the first two months and $55 for each following month, with a two-year contract required.” Clearwire hasn’t stated when a fully built-out iteration of its 4G network will be available in NYC or LA, but the availability of WiMax spectrum can’t hurt the chances of it being sooner rather than later. The company also stated that: “During this construction phase, owners of CLEAR 4G devices may also experience 4G coverage while traveling to other cities that Clearwire plans to launch commercially later this year, including: San Francisco; Tampa, Miami, and Orlando, Fla.; Nashville, Denver, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburg.” Customarily, Sprint launches 4G service in a given area one to two months after Clearwire.

So if clear says Oct. For my state sprint will take 2more months to let sprint users in that area use it. That sucks then no 4g love for my evo until 2011 the huh

Look at the last few launches and you will find this is no onger true. Boston Clear and Sprint service started on the same day. All future rollouts will procede in this fashion.

I had something drop through my mailbox the other day. They quoted 6Mbps down here in NYC. I already get 3-4Mbps down with at&t. Wake me up when LTE is here.

    • Dan

I find that hard to believe that ATT is downloading at 3 to 4 M a sec. More like 700 to 1.5M…..

  • slammer

If you think you will experience faster downloads with LTE, you are mistaken. LTE and WiMAX are based on the same technological platform. The only difference is in the uploads where the platforms are different. Also, the higher frequency in which WiMAX is transmitted, is far better suited for data transfer allowing faster transmission.

Won’t LTE handsets work in Europe though?

    • bob

unless sprint turns up the speed on their wimax soon they’re toast with most users lucky to get 2mbps… i get that on AT&T on 3g…

      • JM

my point exactly. 4G speeds.. 6Mbps down. not that fast IMHO.

  • slammer

Not unless they are on the same frequency. Keep in mind that LTE on VZW would be different than on ATT. Nothing so far at this point is changing as far as how carriers are conducting their operations. While LTE is being considered a world standard, the transmitted frequencies are not.

I got 4G on my computer a couple days ago and i live in North Hollywood, CA. I had a list of subscribers (CLEAR, Sprint, Time Warner, and Comcast) apparently they all work but most of them say you need to call their number so they can set up the mac address. But CLEAR gives you the option to have a one day pass for 10 bucks. I tried connecting at my girlfriends house to see if there was any 4G around her area, but no success, not even in Pasadena. So it appears to be working in the San Fernando Valley.

my friend says there’s 4G around downtown LA and around Santa Monica. But all i can say its pretty spotty, and sometimes you get it, and sometimes you don’t.

  • Norm

VZW’s 4G is going to be far superior. Who really cares about Sprint?

  • Dave

where in pasadena did you try it out. I am near caltech and thinkin of getting a clear modem but i dunno if there is service here

    • TiredMan

They probably won’t sell you a device if you aren’t in a coverage area. If you zoom in on their coverage maps sometimes the show tower locations in cities they haven’t launched in yet.

  • slammer

I and many others will care about Sprint/Clear. Not because of superiority, but because it will provide an alternative in pricing differential and choice. I know many individuals that sacrificed higher priced plans with VZW, and negotiated into a much more reduced plan with other carriers after realizing they did not need coverage in the desert since they never venture there.

If you care about realistic pricing with VZW’s LTE, I would hope you would welcome Sprint/Clear’s existence rather than praise superiority.

    4G Hartford/New Haven

I live in Baltimore and I’m using Clear’s 3g/4g modem and the screens ( those that are not graphics heavy ) really fly on my PC on WiMax when I surf.

I used to have AT&T and over the past 3 years, the quality of their service deteriorated. I don’t like VZW and didn’t want to wait for the wonderous LTE.

  • Glenn

I don’t think Wimax will work that well in Manhattan since there are so many tall buildings. However, we desperately need more competition for Time Warner Cable.

I have 4g in the bronx and it not even launched yet.. i get 5 mbs down consitantly.. video chat is crystal clear.

  • nutzaboutpoker86

by the way its “Pittsburgh” with an H. and we pretty much get 4g all over most of the city already – just not officially – in fact im typing this with my 4g aircard right now

    • Dale

      Hi Nutzaboutpoker86 !

My wife & I are originally from Pittsburgh and I read that Pittsburgh was being rolled out by the end of 2010. It’s good to know that it’s active there !

We have Clear’s 4g/3g modem and wanted to use it when we visit.

  • adam

Does anyone know when Sprint is launching 4g in Cincinnati? I know by the end if the year. A while back I heard September.

  • Eric

Ct rollout must be imminent, been getting 4g in stamford, Bridgeport and new haven…. Checkout sensorly maps

  • Rev

Nashville, TN (Brookwood to be precise) was live two weeks ago when I stayed there, very strong signal and speeds as well.

  • slammer

    @Bob,

Not to sound argumentive, but your post of obtaining 2mps download speeds from ATT’s 3G, sounds a little high. There may be periodic spikes of that speed, but I question the frequency of how many times this occurs.
