Photos of Samsung GT-i8700 running Windows Phone 7 emerge

General

Gizmodo was sent in several images of what appears to be a very close-to-finished prototype of the Samsung GT-i8700 Windows Phone 7 handset. The device looks to have a screen somewhere in the 4-inch range, 8 GB of internal storage, a camera with an unspecified number of megapixels and LED flash, as well as the Windows Phone 7 operating system. This also appears to be the same phone that made a quick cameo on Twitter in mid-August. The handset does look much more refined — and in our opinion better — than earlier Samsung Windows Phone 7 prototypes we were seeing. This sleeker model enticing to anyone?

all hail windows mobile!!!!! We back baby!!!

WinMo 7 looks like it might capture some of the Xbox 360 Market, I have yet to see the browser though, if they can deliver flash they may sway some IPhone people there way once they get some apps rolling. RIM and Palm should be scared, I don’t see them taking too much from Android and Apple at this point.

I dont think the aim is to sway iphone or android users. There is still a healthy portion of consumers that dont have a smartphone yet and these are MS’s target.

      This phone looks nice.

trooth: if you’re interested in a demo of the browser compared to iPhone 4 and an Android-based phone (I can’t remember wich specific one) check out pocketnow.com. They did an awesome review.

Here is a link to the PocketNow videos where they go through some of the beta build features. It should help you form your own opinion.

I don’t think the main purpose is to lure in XBox users, but it helps. Apple and Android users may switch as the glamour of their offerings begins to fade. Apple’s game center is a joke compared to the WP7 Xbox live hub, and Android has yet to reveal their social gaming system.

Neither one of them are making first party QUALITY titles the way Microsoft has for the last decade and let’s be honest, they have to make some heavy acquisitions to do so. Nintendo looks ripe for the pickings for apple. Either way both companies have to WAIT for third parties to develop quality titles. MS doesn’t have to wait as they have already formed an in house development team and have a game development language and tools to make it compatible with other platforms (PC and XBOX 360). From where I stand… WIN!

Yes because there arent enough Android phones out already…i guess ppl shouldnt be able to chose what OS is best for them huh?

People have a RIGHT to ugly after all…

Norm why even post here, you get down ranked quicker than Paris Hilton

I seen a prototype video of some dude, comparing winmo, iphone, and droid browser comparison…I remember it was just a prototype and unfinished and premature winmo video….I can say one thing….they did a hellava job…there were certain pages of course that loaded quicker then the others, and vice versa…..very promising….wonder why they didnt include my 9700 in that test comparison….

    • ItsMeBeaches

Probably didnt include the 9700 cuz there had to be a limit to how many phones he can operate at once lol.

    • Drewidian

It was Brandon Miniman from PocketNow.com and the video of the browser comparison can be seen here…

Thanks for the link. I was WinMo for a long time. Finally went to Android and I like the Android system. Microsoft has a chance now to revamp their weaknesses from WinMo. I dislike that they have killed some of the major strengths though. I will wait to see it in person. I may even wait till second or third generations when they get some updates for stuff like copy and paste in.

  • Mr.Bill

Not bad, good to see some devices breaking out.

I feel it looks a lot like the xperia from the back, need to see more pics…

  • 1jaxstate1

I wonder how much with no contract. If it gets good reviews, I’ll sell my iPhone 4 on ebay to cover the cost. Not that I dislike my iP4, I just want to try something new. WP7 is looking pretty good.

    • GN

if you look at the history of most carriers prices. Usually runs around the $199.00 w/2year contract attached to your hip…with the exception of the Iphone 3gs back in the day along with the 4g ive seen for AT&T run $299 for the 32 gib…that could change of course…I think they will keep all the upcoming phones pretty much the same.

      • GN

lemme rephrase that….upcoming, high end smart phones at around $199 with 2/year..

  • PAPINYC

Does look nice. What a shame.

  • Mr.Bill

I wonder if Samsung has bumped up their hardware specs to match LGs.

Tegra2 I hear, Kind of a step up over whats hot now imo.

  • clamknuckle

It would be awesome if you could even do basic multitasking or copy and paste.

Copy and paste isn’t that big of a deal, but the fact that if I wanted to say, listen to pandora, I would have to just stare at the pandora screen, and if I wanted tod o anything else with the device, like I don’t know, text or browse the web, Pandora would stop. Windows Mobile 7 is a step backwards, and it will probably flop harder than WebOS

    • theking25

whoa! WebOS didnt flop…..the hardware did, the software was outstanding with the best multitasking on a mobile os.

      • trooth

WebOS was great. Just suffered from Palm’s Hardware. That had been their problem all along. Really good software, mediocre hardware.

  • bob

    lipstick on a pig…

    • PrivateBlinky

Dude, don’t get me all excited like that…

    • Curious Jorge

I wasn’t interest in your comment until I saw it was seriously disliked. Now I’m fascinated.

  • naughty_nicky

boy, look at all those bezel hidden under the glass screen. You won’t fool me with that, Samsung.

  • Nostrildamus

I predict that Windows Mobile 7 will be as successful as the kin. So be it.

  • I told you so.com

though win7 looks nice you need to see what Webos 2.0 and the new Palm Envy for sprint, and Verizon will look like. People forget HP is behind them and from what we hear two models will be out this fall 1 a vertical slider 3.8 inch glass retna display top of the line hardware 1.2ghz and a tablet 4inch glass screen 1.2ghz as well. Hp has inversted almost a billion dollars alone on production for Webos as well as send 20 executive workers to assist Rubenstien and the Palm team on making the smartphones and tablets. Webos HPalm is the future watch people jump ship.

  • Pax

    THIS IS AN HTC DIAMOND….FAKE

  • clamknuckle

WebOS did flop. The two phones that carried it flopped hard. WebOS is a nice software platform, but it doesn’t change the fact that no one wants it because the hardware is terrible. Not to mention it’s still the weakest app store.

It might come back a bit with HP behind it, but unfortunately, the market is too full of smartphone OS’s right now, and WebOS is the least needed one. There’s nothing special that it offers except a difference in the way it multitasks. The thing that people fail to realize is, that difference is mostly graphical compared to Android. Android multitasks just as well as WebOS, it just doesn’t show you all the apps on the home screen. I had a Pre at launch, and promptly switched to the Hero when it came out. Hell, iOS4 multitasks enough for most people.

Now, back on topic. Windows Phone 7 can’t do any basic multitasking at all. People want to be able to do more than one thing at a time with their $200 phones. The sheer fact that you can’t even send a music app to the background to play wh ile you send a text or surf the web or play a game or anything at all is absolutely insane. It’s 2010, devices that come out should be innovative and new, or improve greatly on their old formulas.

WP7 is a step backwards from the Windows Mobile 5, let alone 6 or 6.5. It’s going to fail.

    • Argenys

You’re funny. Why not read before you comment? There is basic multi tasking in the system. You can listen to music in the backround. At launch it will only come from the zune player but as the system gets updated it will include more apps attached to that hub.

  • clamknuckle

    From engadget:

“third-party apps are actually left running in a suspended state (Microsoft calls it ‘dehydrated’) as long as the system doesn’t need any additional resources. If the user cycles back to an app, it’s resumed (‘rehydrated’) and life continues merrily along, but if the user opens other apps and the system needs additional resources, the app is killed without any indication or remorse.” Like the iPhone, the on-board music player and browser can fully run in the background, but you’re out of luck if you want Pandora to stream while you’re switching through apps.

That’s WITH the basic multitasking that’s in the system.
