General

Today, T-Mobile announced a new, cost-saving feature for those that have family plans and progeny called Kids Are Free. As T-Mobile explains, “With Kids Are Free, new and existing T-Mobile customers who sign up for a qualifying family plan through Nov. 2, 2010, receive free add-a-line service on up to three lines of their plan until 2012.” The press release cites a Pew Research study that found 75% of children between 12 and 17 now carry a cell phone. The limited time offer is good until November 2nd and customers will be responsible for paying all taxes, fees, and activation charges on the free lines. “The Kids Are Free promotion is the latest effort from T-Mobile to ensure families are united with compelling and affordable mobile services,” stated the press release. You can hit up T-Mo’s website for more information. The full release is after the break.

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Sept. 8, 2010 — Continuing its efforts to give families the freedom to stay connected on their terms, T-Mobile USA, Inc. today announced a new promotional offer called Kids Are Free to make family communication easy and more budget friendly. With Kids Are Free, new and existing T-Mobile customers who sign up for a qualifying family plan through Nov. 2, 2010, receive free add-a-line service on up to three lines of their plan until 2012.*

Families are busier than ever. Between soccer practice, school, time with friends and work, families are always on the go, and mobile phones provide a vital line of communication for them. According to a study published in April 2010 by the Pew Research Center, 75 percent of children ages 12 to 17 now have a cell phone.** That said, it can be a struggle for parents to balance the family budget in order to keep the whole family in touch while on the go.

“Not only is T-Mobile offering the most flexible and affordable family plans among national carriers today, we are also making it more affordable than ever for families to add their kids or other family members by eliminating the associated monthly service fee until 2012,” said Ashley White, marketing director of value offers at T-Mobile USA. “The up-front cost of purchasing new phones and dealing with monthly service fees for an entire family can add up quickly, so this promotion is designed to make it easier for families.”

The Kids are Free promotion is the latest effort from T-Mobile to ensure families are united with compelling and affordable mobile services. Additional family-friendly offers this fall include the following:

  • Special deals on the latest devices. Starting today customers who purchase a Samsung Vibrant receive a second Samsung Vibrant for free after a $50 mail-in rebate with a two-year service agreement. Also, T-Mobile’s new line of messaging phones are all under $75 after a mail-in rebate with a two-year service agreement. Adding unlimited texting for the whole family is just $20 per month.
  • T-Mobile’s Even More® and no annual contract Even More Plus® family plans offer customers affordable options for their family’s wireless communication. T-Mobile’s Even More family plans start at $59.99 per month and T-Mobile’s Even More Plus family plans start at just $49.99 per month.
  • T-Mobile’s Family Allowances™ service lets parents set up-front monthly allowances for their family’s phone usage — minutes, messages, and downloads.

I can’t help wonder if this is out of desperation..

If it is or if its not, at&t needs to step up their game to compete with verizon and t-mobile.. The recent marketing ploys between the two have been great and this kids are free promo is a great way to top it off. Desperation or not..

    • http://twitter.com/mattstkc MattSTKC

AT&T can’t compete until they lower ETF’s and prices. T-Mobile still does 2 yr contracts, but after 1 yr, you pay $35 per line, you’re out of contract, and pay the Month to Month rates which are up to $30 lower. If anyone wants to make the mobile market more competitive, they need to offer lower non-contract prices not just as prepaid individual plans for dumb phones but everything under the sun, including iPhone and other smartphone non-contract individual and family plans.

    I love t mobile!

Sprint is eating teen mobile alive…

    • http://twitter.com/mattstkc MattSTKC

Please. Sprint has been losing customers hand over fist until the Evo. Plus who wants to be on CDMA? It’s dead tech. The US is the only relevant country still on it and still “free market” enough to not require carriers allow you to use your phone on any network.

    • HabibAKAJohn/Peter/Tom@SprintPOS

Sure they are, is Sprint POS making any money yet? Maybe they finally can afford to build out their own high speed network! oops nope, not.. Sprint is still the gutter trash carrier.

  • RR Droi

You get what you pay for, low price = mediocre network. And who’s brilliant marketing idea was it to name it that? Sounds creepy to say the least….

  • http://twitter.com/mattstkc MattSTKC

This is an awesome way to game the system for new phones. Want the Vibrant and aren’t in an upgrade period? want the new G2? Add a free line for your fictional child, then just swap the sim cards on your own, sell the other phone, never use the line, and in 2 years, when this promotion ends, the contract will be up and you can cancel the line.

    • Kip

      data still costs $30

    • serpentor

I was curious about this also, but I just assumed you still pay the data add on, no?

  • DC5

Hows tmobile desperate look at sprints plans any mobile, cheaper data and boost were all desperation moves to bring customers back after the whole sero plan n forcing customers to pay more, terrible customer service and there still losing money tmobile has always been the small carrier and probably will stay that way the market doesn’t fluctuate enough for them to acquire enough people to move up just like that but they are still showing profit

  • Mr. Miller

    Kids are NOT free.

  • craphos

don’t understand why ppl so angry and confused. who cares if it’s a small network, who cares if they file bankrupcy, who cares if they die tomorrow, somebody will buy them anyways and the subscribers will continue to keep their lines and service. if somebody has better prices, go with it. cell phone network is not a trend or a fashion (like emachine vs sony, or target vs luis vuton) if you think the service is good for you don’t hesitate to switch.

  • Mohammad

umm yes kids are free to produce.

  • Bad@$$

Tmobile will still have a firey death.. good luck fellas

  • Smoking Gun

T-Mobile like the rest of them make the bulk of their profits off of their plans & services, not the selling of phones.

Why is it an act of desperation to try to sell more plans & services if that is what you are primarily in business for.

To think that it is, is sort of pretzel logic.

  • Josh

If you look on the website there are severe restriction

I run a small trucking company who has drives who run 48 states and we have been with just about every carrier and T-mobile has been the best service that we have been with my drivers say that they have less dropped calls and the service works great no matter if they in a very rural area or the city.

Guys like I said Nothing FREE in America.

You will pay some other way… Like when they charge you for receiving calls from other people how rediculous is that….

    Good Luck

  • Raven

What is up with until 2012, they act like the world going to end or something..please explain!!!!

  • LaShawnda@TeenMobile

I completely agree. They are irrelevant in the US mobile industry and continue to push out garbage service and weak phones.

  • Killah Kyle

Who’s stupid enough to go with a carrier that’s looking to go above and beyond to rip you off? Are you seriously trying to get rid of competition or something? People like you have become so obsessed over the big guy you support, you forgot the little man is what controls him from completely using you. When promotions like these occur and majorities support them, you would see companies like verizon start to match them and drop their prices. T-mobile puts a lot of pressure on carriers to keep their prices somewhat low. I guess with so many people forcing their arrogant opinions down the little mans throat and telling them to close shop, we’ll see our ideas of supporting free trade and fair competition flushed down the toilet because of your stubborn attitudes.

  • Joe B.

The truth is T-Mobile service is wideley regarded as terrible and the only moves they have left to make are price slashes to convince customers not to port to other networks. T-Mobile seems to grow more desperate by the month.

  • http://twitter.com/mattstkc MattSTKC

T-Mobile needs the iPhone or there will be that rumored Sprint Merger.

You need low prices and great phones, and right now T-Mob only has low prices. Even the new G2 won’t matter because they’re stupid enough to put less than 1 GHZ in it. I can’t find a better value, but I want a better phone. Hopefully that January rumor is true. I want my iPhone back.

  • HabibAKAJohn/Peter/Tom@SprintPOS

Like Sprint with their new $25 Virgin Plans? The $50 unlimited Boost Plan? If you want desperation you want Sprint, fool. Sprint has been the worst for years and that’s reflected in their horrible standing today. Net LOSSES for years.

  • Killah Kyle

Desperate? Desperate is actually lowering all their plan prices drastically, merging with another company, auctioning off their US branch, or filing chapter 11. Not making limited time offers, bogo smartphones, un-subsidized plans, and plans to expand and improve their 3g network along with bringing in a better phone selection.

Thanks for spreading your flavors of hate. Why not promote each carrier for what they have to offer? Simply verizon has quality coverage and phones at a high price. At&t has the iphone. Sprint has the best single line price and the Evo+epic 4g. Tmobile has cheapest family plans. And then you have cheaper carriers below them. This is honestly a very good balance imo.
