Google announces 'Google Instant', predictive search results as you type

Breaking

Today, at Google’s search event, the Mountain View company announced a new search service titled Google Instant. Google details that over one billion users use the company’s search service each week. Those billions and billions of users, on average, take nine seconds to type a search query and an additional fifteen seconds selecting the appropriate returned result. Google is banking on reducing both of these times by displaying predictive search results as a user types their search query. For example, “the gi” into the search bar will result in instant results for the novel “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” The user will also be presented with several alternative query suggestions for the original string “the gi” (much in the same way search suggestions are presented now). The feature is rolling out today in the U.S. for all users of Chrome, FireFox, Internet Explorer 8, and Safari. Google Instant will begin to appear internationally in the U.K., France, Italy, Germany, and Spain beginning next week.

UPDATE: Google demoed Google Instant running on Android — an original Motorola DROID to be exact — and said it would come to the platform “later this fall.”

    The Google takeover continues!!

You are an idiot, Google owns search, how exactly are they going to “takeover” search?

      • Androidian

How can any company own something that has other competitors in the market?? IDIOT!!!

Wasn’t this available for years now? I’ve always gotten predicted search results on Google. At least for one year. What’s different about this?

    • Andrew Munchbach

You’ve gotten search string suggestions, this actually shows the search results that Google thinks you want without hitting “Search” or “return.”

      • sirpaul

Thanks Andrew :) I went to google.com to check it out for myself (I live in Canada). Posted my 2nd comment while you were typing yours.

Never mind, just tested it! Pretty cool, though there may be issues. What if the predictive search is wrong and some retarded query comes up…and the content is questionable…and your boss is there and doesn’t know about the feature. Cool, idk how useful it is though…we’ll just have to wait and see.

Then you tick the option next to search bar that says “turn off instant search”

  • Jarrett

My guess is that your searches will get smarter every time you search. Sort of like Another company uses their “genius” to field media one might be interested in.

    DROID DOES

  • slammer

While it is not full predictive, I believe the Palm Pre and Pixi have very Unique similar skills. Can anyone clarify?

  • Justin

I don’t get it. Google has been predicting my search for at least a year now if not longer? What is new about this???

    • Icu

Check out the third comment and its responses. I asked the same thing until I reread this article more closely.

    • Icu

Instead of just showing query suggestions, it also show search RESULTS as you type

  • navi

is it just me or does that look like they are using a Mac for the demo?

    • navi

i get a -2 for making an observation? some real douche bags on this site.

  • Bing

So dosn’t Microsoft’s Bing search engine do that already?

    • JME

Yep, I tested it out. Bing does this already. Not to mention the Bing App that is in the Android market does this already as well. As to those that posted about the Samsung VZW is releasing making it seem like this is a big deal because it will use Bing. Clearly as Bing beat Google to this, its not a big deal. Not to mention that if someone really did care, they can always just use the google page and set it as their home page.

So to those of you who are Google fan boys, thats great, but please try to realize just because Google announced they are going to do something, doesn’t mean they did it first, or do it the best. I love my Droid. I love Tech all around. Apple, Microsoft, Google, and others. All make excellent products, and often they duplicate each others methods, and build on them.

      Just keep an open mind.

Since when did bing actually load search page reults that change with each letter input, not just thread suggestions. These are actually the results you get when you click on them or hit search, not just the suggestions ie “why cant i buy a canadian”. You just dont need to hit search anymore. If you could please post a video of bing on a desktop/laptop or phone doing this. I am very interested.

  • Faalkor

This will be cool on the new VZW Samsung Android phone….oh wait

  • patrick

Yeah. Sorry samsung people. Looks like you will have to go to the web page. I wonder if vzw is doing a face palm right about now?

  • Ryan

Way quicker than i thought it would be

  • Rhatik Darkio

THATS BEEN OUT FOR YEARS WHAT ARE THEY TALKINH ABOUT?

  • patrick x

do your research people. This is not the same function as what you think it is.

  • thatpimprod

    I been had chocolate truffles

  • VZSprextel

No support for IE6 (or IE7). Good move, Google. After all, IE6 is a nine-year-old chew toy for hackers, and companies should be upgrading to the latest browsers.

  • YellowKid

thats a crazy feature!! its amazing. google making people type less is a beautiful thing :)
