Samsung to increase display production ten fold in 2011

General

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Samsung Mobile Display will use Samsung’s new, $2.1 billion factory being constructed in Korea to increase display production. The new factory, located in the southern section of Seoul, will up Samsung’s display making capacity from 3 million units to 30 million units per month. Martin Fichter, HTC’s vice president of product management and planning, said “the display was definitely one of the bigger issues that we needed to solve.” Samsung expects demand for its AMOLED displays to drastically increase in the coming years, estimating that 700 million AMOLED devices will be in the market by 2015. The report cited HTC — specifically the DROID Incredible and EVO 4G models — as being the company most affected by the current AMOLED shortage.

Hopefully super AMOLED screens fall under this tenfold increase in production

Exactly Jay, I had a Captivate for 3 weeks. The Super AMOLED is THE most beautiful display I have ever seen. I would love to own this display again in the future.
(wish the Captivate had working gps and not so sluggish that’s to at&t’s crapware).

Sorry, but AMOLED is one of the most overrated displays ever. It has good contrast but whites are literally blue and text is EXTREMELY pixelated. I don’t ever see any mention of this anywhere but all you have to do is drive down to a store a see it for yourself. I had the chance to replace my EVO 4G with an Epic, and let me tell you, the huge pixels made it a deal breaker to me.

Anyone saying the display is not ridiculously pixelated is in denial. Seriously. It’s that bad.

Sorry, I take my statement back. just learnt that my wife ran away with the UPS guy. Not in mood today, Sorry

      • Mohammad

Are you being serious abt your wife? Damn man. What did this country come down to?

      • UPS guy with BIG package

It’s on the internet, of course it’s true!

      • TB

        Sorry about your wife JD

    umm, Evo4G doesnt use AMOLED…
anyways, screw amoled, its all about super amoled

    • D3vr04

I thought the same thing as I was reading the article. Perhaps that’s what they wanted initially…AMOLED?

  • Tommy

Why are the EVO? It doesn’t have an amoled screen…

  • JM

Why do so many people keep saying that the Evo has an AMOLED display? It does not.

  • urlate

Because Andrew Munchbach sucks at research and reporting. This news is also late as Samsung has said this over and over again. Always late, Munchbach.

  • ohmy

so SOMLED is the future for all devices?
what if another technology takes it place….what will happen then?

    • Killah Kyle

It’s not. This is marketing. They won’t release anything else until like, lets say, 2015.

  • Norm

With VzW bringing us all these great DROIDs every month Samaung better crank up production. DROID + VZW FTW!!!!!

  • Turbocooper

Well this is a plus!! So why is it then that there isnt gonna be an AMOLED display in Galaxy Tablet? haha. oh well….

  • justme

The new flexible screens samsung is producing are where screens are headed

    • Mr. Bill

Can;t see them used in mobile phones, would be like typing on a smashed banana, without a rigid backing.

      Idk man, puff,puff pass mmmkay.

  • MadSkillz

I hope Samsung doesn’t pull the crap they did and suddenly have a shortage on AMOLED for third parties again when they have their own phone to roll out.

    That was not cool.

    • Matt

The Galaxy S uses super AMOLED not regular AMOLED.

  • Josh

First off to repeat others, the EVO does NOT have an AMOLED display. I know several people with the Incredible, and I prefer the EVO’s screen to the AMOLED of the Incredible, for the main reason, that it is IMPOSSIBLE to see anything on the AMOLED screen in direct sunlight, you can adjust the brightness all you want, it still sucks. Now thats not to say the EVO’s is amazing in direct sunlight, cause it aint, but it is 10X better than the Incredible.

  • Killah Kyle

Wait until the al queda hit it

  • Matt

AMOLED is great if you want to watch Avatar or something on your tiny 4inch or smaller screen but personally the pixelated text is a deal breaker for me.

I have read a lot of complaints about burn in on AMOLED especially the newer super AMOLED so I’ll wait it out.
