Samsung ups 2010 smartphone sales target by 7 million units

General

For those of you wondering whether or not the Galaxy S family of phones has been a hit, we present you this story. Today, at IFA in Berlin, Samsung Mobile President J.K. Shin told reporters that his company is upping its smartphone sales estimates for 2010 from 18 million to 25 million. The original estimate of 18 million units was three times higher than the total number of cell phones shipped by Samsung in 2009. Shin went on to say that he is confident his company will grab a double-digit share of the smartphone market by year’s end. Go get em’ Sammy!

part of their master plan of worldwide domination using Android.

    • tmM

Android has little to do with this. Fact of the matter is that Samsung is basically the only smartphone vendor that has ample supply. Display components are very constrained, yet Samsung is in the driver seat being it is a major display manufacturer. Others like HTC and Motorola have been feeling it; they would be selling tons more units if they had phones. Especially HTC. Instead. Samsung is kicking everyone’s ass because of it.

While others work on alleviating problems, concentrating on expanding production & distribution, Samsung can focus on enhancing it’s product line

      • George Curious

It’s not just displays. Processors and memory are in short supply mostly due to bad forecasting by component suppliers. Samsung makes all of these. They are in a good position to sell their own products but I’m sure they would be happier if they had more component inventory to sell other manufacturers too.

Samsung has said they will not be supplying Super AMOLED displays to other manufacturers until sometime in 2010. Regular AMOLED is still available but in short supply. Manufacturers are using regular LCDs like on the Droid X to help avoid production delays.

        *2012*

      • Drew

I would tend to disagree. Samsung can manufacture all the screens they want but if they’re not going to be used on the Android platform those sales aren’t gonna be nearly as much as they are now. So, it’s hand in hand…

      • Drew

I’m so glad they (Samsung) didn’t give Steve-o those Super AMOLED’s that he wanted for the iP4.

  • WalterSobchak

I may add to these numbers with a fascinate. Thanks to the Basterds at moto with this efuse crud!

We will have to see if the estimates become reality at the end of 2010

    • George Curious

Hmm, a somewhat unorthodox plan but I can see that you are both cautious and wise. It has been decided: we will wait to see if the estimates become reality at the end of 2010. Meet here December 31, 2010 for further discussion.

Sure, since they make their phones look like iPhone, it’s easier to confuse consumers and also lower entry price point and Buy One Get One Free. It’s hard not to sell that many units.

When will Apple do “Buy One Get One Free” for iPhone? I will buy 3 Right Now……

    • George Curious

The only confused people are the ones buying iPhones.

    • Pretzel Logic

So you’ll pay $960 over two years for each phone to save $200 and think that’s a great bargain?

      • WalterSobchak

Where can u get an phone plan for $40. More like you pay $2000-$2800 over two years and save $100/phone

      • Drew

        That’s his Apple-logic…. What a re-tard.

  • Donkadooballs

25 mil.? Applesuace anyone? Good competition yields results. Nuff said.

  • Swagger

I miss my Samsung Eternity, back during my ATT days. That phone was sick.

  • daavy

i put my hands on the fascinate.. its pretty nice.. great alternative to moto’s efuse garbage, too.

  • iamajim

Nice to see Samsung back in game; competition yields great results for the consumer. Things were getting boring with crApple/Moto duking it out and yeah, what’s up with Sammy aping the iphone so much? It’s the one thing that gives me pause in buying a Galaxy.

  • Shhhh

    They make great T.V’s

  • X Glansburg

I still don’t see the issue with the efuse. Theoretically I can still root my Droid X and I might considering I want free tethering for random, occasional use. My question is to one of you long time Android users is that will my phone stay rooted when I can finally upgrade to 2.2? In the past with my iphone a jailbreak had to be done with each OS update, does the same apply to Android?

    • George Curious

Even if you can get around it, it’s like Moto giving the enthusiast crowd the middle finger.

    • Mike

G, just download PDAnet. I’ve been using that on my 2.1 Droid X.

Even if you lose root when you update, there are ways of getting it back.

    • WalterSobchak

If you root and run a custom ROM, then you just upgrade the ROM to its new version without doing a data/cache wipe. A stable 2.2 ROM will be available soon.
Now, If you run stock 2.2 you would have to downgrade it to 2.1 to root, until someone came up with a root method for DX 2.2.
Someone already rooted the D2 2.2 and the evo 2.2 so it shouldn’t be long.

  • zapote21

Nice… 7 million more Android phones out in the world

  • Ace Of Space

    I like Samsung Phones.

They remind me of my fave fast food joint, Burger King.

Like a Whopper, they start falling apart after you buy it.

But they’re cheap, so like a Whopper….just grab another one!

    • George Curious

You eat at Burger King? Credibility (and taste) = -1

      • Ace Of Space

I must have some credibility and taste. I did say I like Samsung Phones too.

….Or did you miss that part?

      • George Curious

Nope. No taste or credibility. Sorry.

    • JD

      So true, so true! LOL

  • Mr. Bill

Meanwhile at LG headquarters, you could literally hear a pin drop if it were not for the cobwebs forming along the floor.

    Wtg Sammy.

    • JD

      Why Would LG care?

For every Samsung Phone that sells for 1.99 on Amazon, LG is selling a $2500 Washer & Dryer set at Home Depot.

      It pays to diversify

      • J

Why wouldn’t LG care?? Just because a company is diversified doesn’t mean that they do not care about each product line. While segment diversification does offer some protection, it’s not free.

      • JD

My point was….I don’t feel bad for LG. They’ll continue to make a bit of money.

      • Brad

Um, have you checked Samsung’s product lines? They’re nothing if not diversified. They are one of the leading electronics brands, especially with HDTVs (absolutely loving my 46″ 1080p 120Hz LCD), and they have a line of major home appliances as well.

    • Mr. Bill

At one point, these two Korean comps, were fairly equal.

Samsung has stepped out and over LG, which is a competitor and has nothing as exciting as Samsung does to market NOW.

They both make appliances, big deal, they make alot of other stuff too, it has nothing to do with the mobile divisions.

  • MOJO MOFO

    I think it’s very attainable!

If T-Mo ups its Buy 1 Get 12 Free to maybe Buy 1 Get 32 Free and Amazon maybe offers 3 for $1.00, and if they are able to pawn off some of their BADA Smartphones on the ever so Chic Euros, they may go way, way beyond 25 mil!

    Go Sammy Go!

    • Steve B Job

You want Tmo to sell you 12 for 1 bcoz you dont make enough $$ working as a janitor ??. Go get a life. Get a ral job and then you can dream of owning a smartphone.

  • Brad

This isn’t surprising, especially given the fact that the Epic on Sprint is an instant best-seller, and the Fascinate hasn’t even been released yet.

  • http://www.ianwood.com Ian Wood

Glad to see Sammy with a winner but if they counting a successful future with Android, they’ve got some quality control issues to deal with. Their Galaxy S devices (Epic apparently excluded) are all plagued with wonky GPS that need a firmware update to fix. And we’re all waiting for it… C’mon Sammy! Hurry up! And wrap that GPS fix in some Froyo goodness!

  • Android

If only they weren’t located so close to Kim Jung-Il, I would have more faith in their future.

  • lurch

I bet the shortage of Android phones amongst Samsung’s competition is due, in no small part, to Obama’s previous administration.

  • Politicalslug

Those sales are putrid, and the profits are even worse. I am guessing that Samsung expected to sell a whole lot more Galaxy S phones. Three networks in the US now, and they have barely touched what the iPhone4 managed on one network in 3 days (and these devices have been on the market for 2 months). Sad.

    • Brad

Come on, that’s not really a fair comparison. The iPhone is the only device running iOS, whereas there’s a plethora of different phones running Android. You can’t compare the Galaxy S series sales to the iPhone when the market is already saturated with other high-end Android phones, all jockeying for a chunk of the Android marketshare. If you ask me, sales of a particular phone don’t mean much. Combined sales of all devices running a particular OS is far more interesting If Apple allowed other OEMs to create iOS devices, the iPhone itself likely wouldn’t have near the sales figures it does, but that will never happen.

      • George Curious

        Don’t feed the iTroll.

  • res08hao

That phone is an exact copy of an iphone. The Koreans have zero creativity.

  • http://www.directorycellphones.com/ Alex Sam

This is really amazing and pleasant figure this. Show the popularity of this brand. Samsung is launching very high definition handsets to the market. They are introducing latest technologies with elegant and stylish designs to the market.
