Samsung confirms Honeycomb as name of Android 3.5, more Tab models due

General

Today, at IFA, Samsung executives confirmed previous rumors and outed Google’s next, next mobile OS’ namesake: Honeycomb (also known as Android 3.5). No features or specific details were given about Android 3.5 other than its code name and the fact that it will focus on tablets with larger screens. Samsung also said that there would be multiple Galaxy Tab models with different screen sizes, features, and price points. Though not specifically stated, it would appear as though those models are not due in the near-future; Sammy’s executives reiterated they are laser-focused on the Galaxy Tab’s immanent release (which will get Android 3.0 when it is released, in case you were wondering).

This news is two weeks old. If bgr wasn’t busy kissing verizons ass, they would have reported it two weeks ago.

you mean like this: http://www.bgr.com/2010/08/19/next-version-of-android-to-be-called-honeycomb/ ? it was a rumor then, this is the first time anyone of authority has mentioned it.

Where are you getting the name of Android Honeycomb as 3.5? I was there at the press conference. Someone at the Q&A did ask the Samsung executives about honeycomb, but in my memory (which is strong, as I was surprised the guy called it 3.5) the words “Android 3.5″ was only mentioned by the person asking the question, and not repeated or specifically confirmed by any of the members of Samsung that were answering questions. I haven’t seen any evidence that Honeycomb will be 3.5.

I never noticed this before, but if you look closely, the honeycomb box has a picture of the android robot on it. I’ve bought lots of Honeycomb before and never saw it. I’m going to go take a close look in the pantry to see if any other packaging has it. It may provide a clue to the next code name.

Man I loved those square little records that came in the cereal boxes!

    • George Curious

      WTF is a ‘record’?

  • Verizon Guy

The Honeycomb name is an allusion to the fact that Android 3.x (not confirmed it’s “3.5″) will be optimized for multicore CPUs and CPU+APU hybrids.

      mmmmmmmm… daddy like.

Is there any news out there on Android 3.0? I didnt know it was that close to being released.

  • Swagger

If what has happened so far is any indication the EVO will be the first to get it. Well I mean between the EVO,X,DInc,D2,and the galaxies.

    • WalterSobchak

Interesting…. Even the eris got 2.1 on VZW. Once Sprint stops caring and moves on to the next Android, you aren’t getting any updates. Look at the moment and Hero. Sprint just doesn’t have the $ to focus on more than one project at a time.

      • Swagger

Maybe,or maybe they aren’t VZ and won’t leave the customers in the dust while they skirt chase the next device.

      • SiliconAddict

So what…..forum.xda-developers.com makes carrier support a none issue. T Mobile stopped support of the G1 after 1.6….hasn’t kept me from upgrading it to 2.1 then 2.2 though.

  • George Curious

    Honeycomb’s BIG…
    yeah, yeah, yeah…

    It’s not small…
    no, no, no…

Dude, seriously get the spelling right. I’ve seen it in multiple articles now. It’s not “immanent”, it’s “imminent”. Don’t you check these things before you post?

    • Jeremiah

DITTO. I would have thought spell check was ubiquitous by now.

      • George Curious

Not yet but it’s imminently ubiquitous.

  • ROCKIN A DX!

I bet they are working on DX implementation of 3.0 as we speak. Considering how long it has taken for us to get Froyo I would have to imagine the DX team is doing SOMETHING productive with their time.

  • Garry

Rockin you have a point maybe the dx mite get 3.0 due to the fact of the leaked 2.2 so everyone can upgraded without any issues. :)

  • MacMan

That’s a dumb name just like the rest.

  • Mj

Sooooo I’m guessing the bada os is gone now

  • http://contemplatingandroid.blogspot.com DaveM

Amazed we have not had ANY leaks about 3.0 let alone 3.5

  • Dave

Can’t wait to see what new features are in store

  • blazinsmokey

But I really wanted Frosted Flakes….
