Samsung makes Galaxy Tab official

General

It looks like our friends over at Samsung have officially outed their much hyped Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet device. The Galaxy Tab will pack a 1 GHz Cortex A8 processor, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps / HSDPA 7.2 Mbps radio (900, 1900, 2100 MHz), quad-band GSM, 7-inch WSVGA screen with multitouch, Android 2.2, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, DLNA, Flash 10.1, 4,000 mAh battery, 3 megapixel rear-facing camera with flash, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, full HD video playback at 1080p, microSD card slot with support for up to a 32 GB card, and the unit will weigh 380 grams (13.4 ounces). Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is quite a spec sheet (although the  3 megapixel camera seems a bit sheepish compared to the rest of the device). The closing line of the press release states that, “The Samsung GALAXY Tab will be launched in Europe in mid September, and in other markets including Korea, the US and Asia in coming months;” no word yet on pricing. Let us know your thoughts on the official Galaxy Tab in the comments.

So no U.S. release date and no price? What are they waiting for? The price fairy?

This thing blows the doors of that ipad turd.

So what is it that impresses you so much?

Is it the cheap plastic styling or the magnifying glasses required to see anything on the tiny screen?

Considering the brand, it shouldn’t be of concern about future technology – you’ll need a new one in about 4 months after this one breaks and falls apart.

it may have some features the ipad doesnt but its not better than the ipad. the ipad is solid, and other companies are just rushing out products to compete with apple products and its not working. Look at the whole flash issue, everyone wants flash but apple wont allow it, droid adds it and everyone thinks is slow. Same with this tablet, samsung is just adding things to the spec sheet to get people to say “wow this is better than the ipad”, wait until you try it, it will still bow down to the ipad.

I agree with you. I myself have an iPad, and I wouldn’t dream about switching it for the Galaxy Tab. Although the Tab seems solid, it doesn’t cut it for me. I like the iPad because of the 9.7″ screen, the 1 GHz Apple A4 chip, the aluminum case, and iOS. It is simple to use, and I only need it for simple needs, like watching YouTube videos and surfing the Web. Sure Apple may be trying to take over the world, but you have to admit, they do build solid and easy-to-use devices.

I can conduct actual business using the phone feature and gps feature on a Galaxy Tab. So this thing will pay for itself after a year of use.

Do you know that the “Apple” A4 chip is actually made by Samsung and that the Galaxy Tab uses the same chip?

      • Kroneage

Actually Samsung makes 50% of the parts of iFad including it’s cheaper slower A4 version of Hummingbird w/ 3 times the graphics power of CrApple SGX535 GPU. It also has newest Dual Band Wifi 2.4/5.0Ghz Direct (phone to device or another phone and CrApple nothing has that) along with DLNA and Video out via headphone jack. Bluetooth 3.0 that’s 10x faster than CrApple iFad or iPwn’d 4 along with FM Transceiver to send music to your car or home stereo. The 3G data baseband is capable sending/receiving VOIP Video/Audio unlike iPwn’d4′s Facetime that can only run on Wifi!

With Google Gmail built-in w/ with Video Calling feature you won’t need phone service with your Google Voice number to receive calls with. This relieves the calling stress on the carriers Call Routers and they’ll still share revenue with Google. This is what “3″ Three Network in UK is heading for with pure Skype Phones!

price it below 350, and you got my green.

  • Ben

Price it well and I may consider one.

Holy bezel, Batman! The thing looks more like a digital photo frame than a tablet device. Although, a large bezel might make it easy to hold without accidentally triggering the touchscreen.

    • HorriblePerson

It does look like too much bezel.

But in it’s defense, the iPad (that commenters keep comparing it to) has ~.2″ more bezel on each side.

  • Nick

Will it make phone calls liek the Dell Streak?

    • beholder

Yes it can make phone calls.

  • doublejizzle

    Bring forth the G-Pad!!!

This is going to suck. Why is everyone trying to complete with the ipad. IPAD has a ton of apps. Android has it too. But you know what? I love some of the games I can play on my Ipad. and Some of the utilities exclusive to Ipad. THATS THE DIFFERENCE.. And a lot more big names make apps for Iphone/Ipad than Android.

I’m not so sure about that. I really have no dog in this fight as I don’t own an iPad and have been waiting to see what the competition has in store before I purchase, but I have to say that the iPad’s lack of Flash is a massive deterrent for me. I say this not because of specs alone but because of real world use. I’ve used friends’ iPads and have been really frustrated by its lack of Flash.

A couple examples: (1) buying tickets to a concert via Ticketmaster.com. After going through the long PITA registration process and entering in all my billing info, I ultimately couldn’t continue because I couldn’t see the security verification image and had to go grab the laptop to finish my order. (2) buying tickets to a movie. Again my order came to a halt because the iPad couldn’t display the theater’s seating chart so I could select my seat.

Personally, I don’t care about most of the apps and games that are put out there, but I do care about being able to do the things I want to get done in my everyday life. Frankly, if a device won’t allow me to do that, it’s no good.

Flash is old tech. need to look at the future rather than the past. Flash has been added to the droid and is crap, its slow, the flash games are not up to date to work with touch devices. overall its stinks. companies are starting to see this, which is why html 5 is getting more attention.

      • Chris

That may be true but it’s nice to use a device that supports the current world we live in not one that may exist in the future only. It’s absurd to not include a highly prevalent technology and create a terrible end-user experience. Sure, many companies will make the switch to HTML5, but a lot of companies will be on Flash for a while and it would be nice to be able to use the functionality of these websites.

Looks like a Ipad wannabe. Too bad the apps are going to suck along with the touchscreen. Fail in my book.

    • ipad user

i agree. and who the heck wants a tablet phone. i think Zack Morris is wanting his phone back..lol

    • brad

any sort of tablet device is going to “look like an ipda wannabe” because apple managed to get the first one out and widespread.

Great! The half and half color scheme for the body looks awesome on this phone. Can we get a US release date for October 2010 please.

  • thedogscar

Early October or I will wait for the 4G model.

Verizon is LTE on November 15th.

This site will not let me post a link to the Samsung NYC Event on Sept 16. Hope to get more news then.
