Samsung Fascinate poses with DROID X

Exclusive

The unreleased Samsung Fascinate continues to make appearances in the wild. This time, it can be seen posing for several cameos with its Verizon friend — and fellow member of the Android No-Keyboard Club – the DROID X. We’re still hearing that the Fascinate is due for release in the September 8 – 10 timeframe and the the device will also be available for Verizon’s prepaid, pay-as-you-go plans. We’ve got several more images after the break.

Can this blog do some reporting and find out what is up with the memory and processor discrepancies? k thx bye.

  • Horndog

Once again Verizon has crippled another phone, I was hoping this wasn’t the case. I will protest by not buying this phone and hopefully lack of sales will show verizon they suck….

    • Chut Pata

Why Verizon? Even AT&T downscaled Galaxy S. Their version i.e. Captivate does not have front camera etc

  • http://emuneee.com Evan

VZW didn’t downgrade anything. My Samsung Captivate (AT&T Galaxy S) says…

    Current freq: 800MHz
    Max freg: 1GHz
    Min freq: 1GHz

    Memory
    Total: 333340 kB
    Free: 21760 kB
    Inactive: 141100 kB

I’m going to assume these values are consistent across the entire Galaxy S series.

    • http://emuneee.com Evan

      Correction: Min Freq. 100MHz

The current frequency seems to flunctuate as well depending on CPU load. Right now, its sitting at 400MHz.

So is it safe to say the gfx has 128mb of RAM devoted to it? Will this affect upgrading to gingerbread?

Would really like to get a phone that is as future proof as possible and ive been waiting 10 weeks for this phone only to now worry verizon has cut off one of its balls.

Thank you for the rsch Evan, I was about to call my friend with the captivate to ask him to do this for me.

Check this hands on video. At 1:15 he confirms 512MB.

Samsung uses oneDRAM for video which doesn’t show in total memory. This is going to confuse the crap out of people. Not sure how it affects Gingerbread but you may want to worry about that and get this phone for 1 year since LTE will be rolling out by then.

Check out the dude’s site for more info:

Thanks EVAN for the useful info.

The Galaxy S series are pretty much top of the line at the moment, along with the Droid 2/X. If anything is going to be able to run Gingerbread, this will. If it gets an official update depends on the manufacturer, but the Galaxy S series is going to be supported by Cyanogen, so it is a pretty safe bet that Gingerbread will be making its way onto this phone

      • Steven Jones

GOOD!, I’m glad to see your RAM says the same thing… I couldnt care less about the CPU, I was certain that was equal.
Thank you, I have been looking for this EVERYWHERE!

      • Brad

THANK YOU! Finally, somebody that can actually read ALL of the info in the pictures. The phone was just running at 800MHz at that particular moment in time. The spec to look at is Max freq., which is 1000MHz (i.e. 1GHz).

Also, I was highly suspicious that Verizon was simply reporting their memory differently. As somebody pointed out, this phone uses a system on a chip design, in which memory is integrated with everything else, and I find it highly unlikely that Verizon would have a unique version of this with less memory. You’d think that would actually cost them more in the long run. Still though, it remains to be seen whether the Galaxy S line will be capable of running Gingerbread or not. Samsung has committed only to Froyo right now, nothing else. At least now I know that either all of the Galaxy S phones will support it, or none of them will.

      +1.. Thanks man!

Can we get a Vibrant or some other Galaxy S to confirm their numbers as well, please?

      • LOLcat

Or how about someone at BGR calls a Samsung rep?

    • George Curious

      1:17 confirms memory

  • Chris

Each version of the phone is different yet they all run with a 1MHz processor. Some have cameras so do not; some have 8GB of memory on board some have 2GB in the case of the Verizon version. Verizon is also the only carrier in which the Galaxy has a camera and a flash!

    • Jon

Wow- way off buddy. Clearly you meant 1Ghz.. but the Epic has a camera, flash, and is the only Galaxy S device with a dedicated camera BUTTON.

  • pillagingjack

Did anyone point out the BLUR-less set up of the Droid X?????

    • Saber

Whats your point. thats old news…

    • GadgetGuitar

Agree, first thing I noticed, no Touchwiz, since we know how to disable it, and no blur on the X (wish I knew how to disable without root)

      • Gmo

Go to the market and install LauncherPro or ADW Launcher and the blur launcher will be gone from your homescreen.

      • ZPrime

Yeah, that’s not blur-less. Look at the status bar widgets – those are still Blur.

They just put in an alternative launcher, which doesn’t do shit to get rid of all of the junk that Blur runs in the background.

  • blat

looks like someone scratched the hell out of the DX

    • ZPrime

Nah, looks more like adhesive remnants from a removed screen protector.

It takes a very deliberate and concerted effort to scratch “Gorilla Glass” (which is what Motorola has on all of their Droids).

  • iamajim

Amazing-these are probably two of the best phones in the world just now and both are on Big Red-is’t going to be a nice Christmas with my NE2 in Oct.

  • Chad

So what one is getting better signal strength? That’s what I want to know? They look the same in the pics but it’s hard to tell. I know that the bars isn’t the most accurate way to tell is there a way you guys can test what one has the stronger antenna?

    • MG

If this helps you any, I have had my DX for exactly one month today and I have yet to drop a single call. I have my gripes about my X but I have to say that Call quality and lack of dropped calls is the best I have ever experienced out of any device on any carrier.

      • hemdroid

I live in an area where cell service is minimal and Moto phones have always given me the best signal. I would put Sammy in second place and LG in last place.

      • Chad

Good to know! I live in an area where the VZW coverage is spotty and AT&T is perfect but I don’t want to make the switch and lose my unlimited data!

My Samsung Saga seems to be really weak for reception.

What don’t you like about the DX?

  • jmts80

Ok so it does have 512 MB RAM. That is great. Now I just have to wait for it to be released so it can b rooted and I can install the Google search widget. Cant wait!

    • Steven jones

I’d bet it can be done WITHOUT rooting. (Google Widget and button integration)
The only questions that really comes to mind is: When it gets 2.2, since it uses bing, will we not be able to user the google voice commands? (Users that dont mod there phone in any way, might like to know…)

  • Jonesable

My Android brethren and sisteren(????), here lies one of our problems , while spirited debate is healthy, constantly dumping on one android phone over another IMO doesnt do anything positive for our favorite OS. Android unity please.

    • Jonesable

      SN: I love my DX

  • synoodle

I heard the fascinate is going to be bogo so get a droid x and a fascinate. Too bad big red wont honor this on a prepaid droid x. After hours of research on both of these phones I came to the conclusion that the fascinate is a better phone for me. I read fascinate wel have

  • Synoodle

The above comment took me half am hour to write on this lagging lg ally, now what I was saying was that the fasinate will have 512 memory, unsure where that person got a 3hundred # for memory. So ya droid x wins there. Does droid x do 90 million triangles? Umm no. is the droid x a certified divx player in the phone? No. (only samsung wave n galaxy s phones are divx players built into phone, they will play 720hd flicks.)
Does the droid x have a six axis gyroscope for enhanced game play? No.
does the droid look boxy n screen look stretchy? Yes. The fascinate is neck and neck with the droid x just depends movies and games or just a droid. Also that super amoled screen just is so awe! I just hope big red has enough of these in stock.Sprint s version sold very well in its first day. This phone is close to a iphone to some people and I think this phone is going to outsell droid x. Just watch….

  • Synoodle

Oh n droid x has a vr530 graphics chip and the fascinate a vr540 chip,go figure. Also yes I’m avail for phone reviews. Samuelfm23@yahoo.com
I been waitin for the galaxy since march and have been studying it since. I wanted a droid x until I knew when the fascinate was coming out and if it fails my expectations well either droid x or droid 2,yawn. At least I get a test drive.

  • erasmogjr

Lol at everyone freaking out with the pic of the processor scaling to 800 mhz imagine the picture in a standby state scaling to 300 or lower that would have been it for the fascinate lol. They are both great phones I have the droid x and love it in two months it will be old news and ill want the new six inch lte 2 ghz monster that will be announced ;-)
