Huawei launches affordable, Android 2.2 Ideos handset

General

Today in Berlin, Huawei announced the official launch of its affordable, accessible Android 2.2 handset, the Ideos. The Ideos handset comes complete with a 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen display (320 x 240), 528 MHz processor, 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera (no flash), HSDPA 3G, Wi-Fi, 3G hotspot capabilities, and a micro-SD card slot. The device carries the “with Google” moniker (which means no Android skinning of any kind) and Huawei touted that Google was heavily involved in the designing of the Ideos. The company elaborated that Google’s direct involvement with the Ideos would ensure its owners OS updates with minimal delay, Nexus One style. The device will be available in mid-October for right around $175 off-contract; no word yet on whether or not this little guy will be coming Stateside. The phone is obviously meant to make an Android 2.2, touchscreen handset available to the masses… time will tell if the masses choose to oblige Huawei’s efforts.

I guess this wont be coming to the USA, as Huawei is somehow a “threat” to national security….

    Eww Huawei. Eww Android.

But since I don’t have anything nice to say…

    Nope, can’t think of anything.

528Mhz running 2.2 means slow and buggy as heck- but LOVE the no skin pure android. Wish Moto and HTC would offer a 1Ghz Snapdragon with no skin on in.

I like it! GSM I assume.

I wish there was a Verizon (CDMA) version. Which would be available without their data plan.

How are they ensuring OS upgrades w/ minimal delay when the next android version, 3.0, is going to require a minimum of a 1 GHz processor and this is only 528 MHz?

  • bemymonkey

528MHz (I’m assuming the Dream/Magic chipset?) and QVGA sounds okay, but how much RAM does it have? 256MB and up and I’m sold…

  • dblnutcustard

From the specs it sounds like a G1

  • George

    This could be huge.

If the phone is designed to sell for $175 off-contract, then it is possible to be a free phone with contract.

At that price, it doesn’t need to be an equal to a G2. All it needs to do is work. The carrier sells a data package to go with the phone, and the owner gets an Android smartphone for $0 out of pocket (after rebate).

I’m holding out for the new Kia Mia Android Device.

It may be cheap…..but it’s cheap!

Really, if it is that cheap then they should also target the African market.Over here in Africa we are also hungry for stuff like these, although 52hMHz is a bit of a downr.Make it a snapdragon and $200 a least to make room for future updates of Android.

  • Daedalus

528mhz? Did they realy just re-shell a frickin HTC G1/MyTouch and call it a new phone? Hell my damn G1 has troubles running some parts of 2.2, I can’t imagine what this thing is like.
