Apple posts iPad 4.2 update page, reminds you what's coming

Today, Apple posted its iPad 4.2 software update page to remind you of the improvements that the next iteration of iOS will have for your tablet device. For those who don’t know, iOS 4.2 will bring: multitasking, home screen folders, wireless document printing, AirPlay (streaming audio/video), Apple’s Game Center, a unified inbox, text search in the Safari web browser, as well as a handful of other modifications.     Not that impressive of an update if you ask me. I’m still waiting for some way to use an iPad as a portable computer instead of just as a portable screen for watching TV shows and reading books.

    I think it’s quite disappointing that Apple isn’t even looking at doing that until late next year at the earliest. For those of us that hoped the iPad would be a useable portable computer, we will have to wait for at least one or two hardware revisions and about four OS updates at this point.

    They better hope that Android doesn’t actually get it’s act together because there is a big opportunity to beat Apple at their own game here.

      Your comments don’t make sense. The iPad IS an ultra portable computer. There are very few things the iPad doesn’t do. As a matter of fact I have seriously considered selling my MBP because the iPad has all but replaced it. The only exceptions are Blizzard games, steam games, and Xcode. It will be quite some time before any tablet or net book will be able to handle those applications.

    If you watch the keynote again, you’ll notice that Steve says that 4.2 will bring HDR photos to the iPad. I’m willing to believe that it was potentially a slip up, but it’s painfully obvious that HDR photos have no place on a device without a camera. So I’m guessing (just guessing, no proof other than the line from the keynote) that Apple won’t just release a new OS for the iPad, but an entirely new iPad will come out, probably right around the time the google pad comes out (I believe this site was rumoring it to be on black friday). By having an event this month Apple puts them into a false sense of security about an iPad refresh stealing their headlines. But it would work at least as well as iPhone 4 managed served to white wash over the release of the Incredible or whatever. Their advertising has to be geared to compare it to the iPad, as the iPad is what has attracted people to the market at all. But all of a sudden their comparing their product to the old one.
