Swype coming to Symbian S60 5th edition devices, beta available

General

Today, Nokia announced that the ever-efficient Swype keyboard will be coming to Symbian S60 5th edition devices. The software keyboard, which is currently being launched as a limited beta, supports the N97, N97 mini, X6, 5800, and 5230 Nokia handsets. As Nokia explains: “Swype and Nokia have been hard at work to deliver a limited beta release to Nokia S60 5th edition device owners. Your feedback will be valuable to us in the coming weeks, and we are especially interested in how well Swype interfaces with the many types of applications you use every day.” If you are interested in getting Swype on your S60 device, hit the jump to see a quick video followed by the download link.

Another DROID copy cat. Give it up Nokia. DROID DOES!

Beta Labs is awesome, and Swype integration brings me closer to picking up an N8 instead of waiting for Meego.

I hadn’t looked in a while, but there’s also an experimental HDR camera app for the N900. Now I’m swinging back to Meego.

    Is Symbian still relevant?

    • Shhhh

Maybe not in the U.S because the carriers have everything all sewn up, god bless em. Giving the people just what they want them to have.

But everywhere else in the world it’s still pretty relevant.

This is great news for the 6 people in NA that will get to take advantage of it!

  • Sam

Just installed it on my N97, works very good. Now 5 more people in NA and were set.

  • Tom

Attempted installation on my N97, phone bricked, then disintegrated into dust. Looks like only 4 more people in NA will be able take advantage of it.

I’m getting the N8. At least with Symbian, I know my phone will still be good to go 3+ years from now. I have all the features that I loved about my HTC Hero with Android 2.1 running on my ancient 2007 Nokia E51 (all SMS backup, Twitter, Facebook, and messaging equivalent apps).

Not knocking Android, I do like it, but my point is, if I can find equivalent apps that are available on other Mobile OS’s and put them on MY phone, then why not get what YOU want, not just because OTHER people have it.

So it only supports S60? I love the fact that swype is coming to other OS outside of Android, but it would be nicer if it supported more than just S60. That means all the new stuff like Symbian^3, MeeGo, and the N8 won’t have swype?

    • Dara

Symbian^3 is backwards compatible with Symbian^1 (s60v5) so it will work on the new phones.

I just don’t understand the love affair with Swype… slow and difficult to use.

Though I haven’t used it on my Nokia, isn’t there an app called SlideIt aleady available for S60 5th Devices that is basically the same as Swype?

  • Joni

I hear everyone talking about Swype, which isn’t even out yet. When I’ve been using SlideIT for a while now, which I download from the OVI, and just LOVE it.
So please, try SlideIT, it’s a superior keyboad and it’s already available. :http://mobiletextinput.com/Product/SlideIT/symbian/download.php
