Gmail adds Priority Inbox to repertoire

General

Last night, Google announced the addition of a Priority Inbox to its Gmail email service. As Google explains:

Priority Inbox splits your inbox into three sections: “Important and unread,” “Starred” and “Everything else.” As messages come in, Gmail automatically flags some of them as important. Gmail uses a variety of signals to predict which messages are important, including the people you email most (if you email Bob a lot, a message from Bob is probably important) and which messages you open and reply to (these are likely more important than the ones you skip over). And as you use Gmail, it will get better at categorizing messages for you.

The new feature has been rolling out to Gmail users since late last night. If you see “New! Priority Inbox” in the top right-hand corner of your Gmail window, you’ve got the new feature. Hit the jump to see a video explanation of just how the new inbox will improve your digital life (complete with Ragtime music).

mmmmm…email for those too lazy to sort.

Actually, it’s for those of us who multi-task and need to keep priority messages at the top of the list. How would you be able to sort without this?

One click of the mouse and then scroll…wow that’s hard. I don’t disagree that this is a cool feature, but seriously if you can’t figure out how to sort your messages right now, you should probably stick with licking a stamp and putting it on an envelope.

That assumes there was a “sort” feature in the traditional sense of email (sort by sender, receiver, title, received date, etc).

As it is, you “search” for mails and that’s as close as I find. Sorting functionality has been a request on the gmail google group for some time.

Umm there is if you create labels and set up filters to sort into the different folders. Really not that complex

Niiiiiiice! I’m toying around with it now. I’m hoping this will be implemented to Gmail for Android in the 3.0 build. That woud be SWEET.

i thought the video was cooler than the actual idea itself =/

    I am gay for Google!

I guess this feature would be useless for me, since my inbox is cleared out immediately, so I never have messages living there for more than a day.

Novel and possibly for the lazy and/or technophobes who can’t set up filters on a regular e-mail client to flag the must-read-first items. I haven’t tired it yet to see how it will work with filters/flags one may have established already on Gmail; e.g. separating work messages from social ones.

    Makes sense.

Meanwhile, the Blackberry MORONS have their universal inbox, can’t figure out who is who, must go through the whole email thread, and when they delete, the notification is still there.
