Bloomberg: new Apple TV product to have Netflix streaming

General

Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is “preparing to announce a new set-top box that delivers TV to consumers” and that the aforementioned box “will include [streaming] movies from Netflix.” Bloomberg cites “three people with knowledge of the plans and continues: “The streaming service would be available on the revamped version of Apple TV, due to be introduced tomorrow in San Francisco. [...] Users would pay a subscription fee to Netflix for the service.” Speculation for the time being, but the answers to everyone’s questions will be delivered tomorrow at around 1:00 PM ET.

Unlikely. If apple is pushing for their own rental service, I don’t think they’d put NetFlix on there.

    • MadSkillz

I disagree. Everybody want into the living room including Google and HP. So Apple TV support of Netflix to gain more penetration in households is a no brainer. Apple’s main focus is HARDWARE sales. Plus it will put more pressure both Apple and Netflix keep pricing competitive since people can got to the other service in an instant for overlapping content.

Besides, its being done already on the PS3. You can get content from Sony, or stream directly on the PS3 from Netflix.

In the end, it makes sense.

      • MadSkillz

Looks like I was right. Steve just announced Netflix support a few minutes ago. like around a little before 2pm EST.

  • Eric

    No 1080… no deal. Period.

    • http://www.adtwik.com Omar

No deal for you but for many it will when you realize that their is not that many streaming content delivered on 1080p. I stream netflix from my tivo Premier and ps3 wish are 1080p but the streaming content from netflix amazon and other is only 720p

    • Norm

exactly my point too….I care about specs and specs alone. I want bigger numbers. DROID and VZW do that for me, Apple doesn’t. Apple doesn’t do anything that DROID does. Pathetic Apple fanidiots buy anything Apple. Loser trash.

      • Ryan

Why the hell do you bother with the internet Norm. Oh wait its probably your only portal to the real world because you are too much of a child to go out and face it in person. If I made the stupid, thoughtless, and uneducated comments you make on here I would be afraid too cause people like you get the shit beat outta them.

      • WalterSobchak

How do people not get it? He is not a droid user. You must be new. When something is that over the top, its usually the other side trying to further anger people toward the things they don’t like/understand. Just don’t respond.

  • fp hc hi

If they have netflix on it they did wrong. Google tv ftw, I know it will haqve netflix too, but they don’t have itunes.
Apple=fail, it used to be a hobby, theb google announced google tv, and look whaqt apple does, pathetic.

    • The Real McCoy

      Google TV ftw? LOL

Are you serial? Nobody gives a crap about Google TV.

Or Apple TV for that matter.

      Both are fails

      • 007

        you as person fail….

      • The Real McCoy

        Sorry that the truth hurts.

        Very sorry

    • PAPISDAD

You speaking English. If apple=fail what does that make google… C’mon tell me.

    • http://brams.us Will

I disagree it’s because of what Google did, this had to be in development much longer and the rumors are older than Google TVs.

  • Canela67

Apple TV? Is apple trying to take over the world or something! Im a big fan of apple products when it comes to Music! But whats next an apple tampon? Or dildo?

    • PAPISDAD

Are you kidding? Didn’t you see google tv? Didn’t you see Sony get into movies? All companies expand.

  • A Glamor Geek

If it really only supports 720p, it’s DOA as far as I’m concerned.

  • Riley

Sometimes the hedge funds use CNBC, sometimes it’s Bloomberg.

Sounds like someone wants Netflix stock up big to dump it tomorrow.

    The SEC is completely useless.

  • jaymax

Roku is getting a 1080p update and it already has Netflix.

    • iName

not to mention that wonderful price drop

  • Jason

If it does indeed run ios then it would be foolish not to have netflix.

  • John

I JUST WANT PANDORA SO I CAN STREAM IT TO MY AIRPORT EXPRESS’s through out my house. That will finally make me stop lusting after a sonos system.

    • Jon

use Airfoil. I use my Airport Express and my Apple TV to stream Pandora throughout my house.

  • Scott

No too interested in Apple TV. I’ve got a PS3 for my entertainment, and that plays in 1080p.

I just want a date on a white iPhone 4 with a fixed antenna. That’s their bread and butter, so fix it and release it already!

  • Speed racer

It’s funny how pathetic you complainers are regarding anything apple. JFC! Give it a rest. Seriously. Fail this and fail that. They are a hugely successful company and people like and buy their products because they are generally above average. Deal with it.

    • Jarrett

You might not want to show so much sense around here. These people will down-rank you into oblivion.

      • TucsonGunz

        crybabies.

    • PAPISDAD

      Amen to that.

  • Norm

Apple sucks. This is further proof they are an awful company with no imagination. When DROID Tv or Google TV comes out its going to totally revolutionize open source TV like they did with smartphones.

    • Jarrett

It’s okay Norm, just imagine you are back in County lock up and just let it happen, it’s going to happen anyway and their is nothing Google, Comcast, Microsoft or anyone else can do about it. There is no company that even comes close to Apple in the digital delivery of media, no one.
Apple might use some lube for you but that is as nice as they are going to be. They are still coming in hard and going very deep.

      • Will

LOL one of the funniest response I’ve ever read.

      • PAPISDAD

Ditto that. Norm is obviously a wise man.

    • The Real McCoy

      Droid TV…..lol

Ohhhh, I can’t wait to dump my Direct TV for that…..LOL

WTF is open source tv? Free TV supported by advertising?

Shhhh don’t tell a soul but we’ve aleady had that for about about 60 years.

  • http://c3dude.wordpress.com c3dude

why are we all pretending that google tv was an idea before apple tv? Hasn’t apple been renting movies and allowing tv show purchases from itunes forever? Moreover, why are we acting like apple and google are the first and only ones releasing this kind of product? Seriously, their just releasing their brand of this product line. People will buy whatever they prefer. No one is copying anyone.

  • The Real McCoy

They are both fails because nobody will care. There are already too many ways to get tv and movie programming when you want it and where you want it and on the cheap.

The big $$$$ and success is going to be by those networks or entities that acquire the rights to deliver the live sports broadcasting.

Until Google TV OR Apple TV gets the rights to exclusively deliver things like the Super Bowl or big NASCAR Races, I’ll say it once, twice and three times for the charm…..Nobody Cares

    • http://C3dude.wordpress.com C3dude

Really. Funny then that a look in the apple iTunes market came up with 1.99 espn college football games and 4.99 rose bowl games.

      • The Real McCoy

But people don’t need that. They can watch it for free already.

They can even TIVO it if they want….LOL

Why be stupid and buy something that you can get get for free from a dozen different sources. Apple has no exclusivity about college football games or bowl games.

      • MadSkillz

There are a lot of people choosing what they want to watch and when they want to watch it.

I have a friend that never watches TV over the air. He uses strictly Hulu, YouTube, NetFlix and yes iTunes/AppleTV

And he consumes the content via his Desktop, laptop smartphone and on TV via a set top.

I say its time for people to stop being closed minded and really analyze how you consume media and how much you do. You may find a lot of options to save money on you cable bill by going totally internet delivery.

Apple and Google are going to be the TV titans as they perfect the new way to consume TV content.

  • NuShrike

They have to have Netflix streaming on it or it’s Blockbuster/DOA.

  • Jeff

    Netflix. Oooo. Revolutionary. Not.

  • Jarrett

Apple is live streaming the event tomorrow. Now Gizmodo will get to experience the event in real time. :)

  • Jeff

So will it play downloaded avi/mkv streamed from another computer on the same network? Thats pretty much all I care about.

  • Ernie

I wonder… If apple were to partner up with netflix, maybe even buy them, how many apple haters (aka google fanboys) would all of the sudden say that they always hated netflix and that their service sucks? Even though they always said they loved them (netflix).

    • crescentdave

Beats me. I’ve had streaming Netflix since it came out … on a Samsung and now on a blu-ray Panasonic that cost about $120 and accesses content from a variety of sources. I think netflix is a good value … with a hybrid delivery system. I’m glad apple is finally getting real about this … they need to in order to jump start their global domination of this market as well :) .

I do disagree with people who say 1080p is the ONLY acceptable solution- I think that’s a no-sell from a variety of angles. Check out this link which explores the issue: http://www.tuaw.com/2010/08/13/does-the-apple-tv-need-1080p/

  • Jonn

I still rely on LoggTV for real time television. Great. The TV Wars continue.

  • Sam Redcliff

Yaaaawwnnnn, What doesn’t have Netflix streaming?

  • kate

If it is true, I’m ordering one tomorrow!

  • Neo

Just what I was waiting for and 1080p.
