Motorola: No Android 2.2 upgrade path for DROID X "early adopters"

General

Remember when the folks at HTC made a special Android 2.2 upgrade patch for EVO 4G owners who had upgraded to a leaked build of Froyo found on the Internet? Yeah, Motorola isn’t doing that. Via their support forums, Motorola has stated:

WARNING: Do NOT load the leaked 2.2 upgrade that has been floating around on the Internets. There is currently no upgrade path from that load to the official 2.2 load that will be released by early September. Unless you have some plan to flash your phone back to the current official load, you could be stuck on the leaked version.

So, if you upgraded your handset early — and feel you need the official goodies when they become available in “early September”– it might be a good time to start researching how to flash your device back to the official Android 2.1 build that your DROID X shipped with. If you don’t care which version of 2.2 your DX is running– like we don’t — then good for you.

Motorola insists on being very anti-consumer. Sure, I understand their wanting to “protect” the user experience, but does anyone who loads a custom honestly expect any support from the OEM? I certainly don’t. Motorola needs to stop trying to be like Apple, who practically treats their customers like criminals.

Oh well, I’ve never liked the design of Motorola phones anyway. I definitely like HTC phones, but I’m heading for the Fascinate at this point, as I want to give Samsung a try. I’ve got one kick-butt Samsung 46″ LCD sitting in my living room, so I can’t wait to see what they can do with a phone. Plus, Samsung is probably the friendliest to the rooting community, as the Galaxy S phones are proving to be by far some of the easiest Android devices to root.

Motorola is actually pro-consumer. Because most people are stupid, they have to do something to protect them from themselves; having worked for a couple of different tech companies, I can say pretty unequivocally that there are probably lots of people out there who would load a custom ROM onto a device and still expect OEM support. Believe it or not.

Careful with the Fascinate: though you’ll probably root it anyway, Sammy and Verizon have forced Bing as the only available search provider on the handset.

I am not in the US, so I will likely not see the Motorolla X for anytime, but this makes me sincerely never to want to purchase a Motorola device again.

I have purchaed HTC, love the device. I have also owned a Motorola Milestone…. So good riddance. No Moto!!!

Lmao can’t you just restore the 2.2 ver to the none leak ver. Idk I get my DX tomorrow :) Waited 2 weeks for it.

  • Shhhhhh

You guys need to cut Motorola a little slack.

I mean, they do make some bad ass Walkie Talkies.

  • counsel

Perhaps the gov/educational Internet Two (remember that?) has one of these roms floating about?

  • MSF

This will definitely be my last Motorola device. HTC here I come.

  • MSF

I now recommend HTC over Motorola to all my clients.

    • SOUTHERN MISS ELITE

Why? Because they don’t want people to use unofficial roms and then cry and moan when something goes wrong????

In fact, I don’t believe you have “clients”. I think “clients” = “FRIENDS”.

The only people who like cooked roms are the people who install them. Developers hate ‘em because people get frustrated when rom isn’t working with the program and leave pestering comments asking for it to work (or take it to the android market and give low stars for it not working….)

And manufacturers like Motorola hate it because they don’t officially support it, and it’s bothersome when people flood their boards seeking help or giving unwanted criticism/advice.

And of course, the carrier hates ‘em because they can circumvent what they intended to charge.

So…back to you MSF…why would you not recommend this to your clients? In fact, how would this even be something that would affect a business or employee?

Please…quit your act. No legit person would not recommend a Motorola over any phone because Motorola makes it hard to load your own roms.

95% of Android handsets in use do not have or are not capable of 2.2…..what a huge dissapointment.

Google needs to get control of the fractured os issue and quick. They need to go “Steve” on handset makers.

They release the 1st Droid as pretty much a developer phone that gains popularity because its so customizable.

So what do they do with their new found relevance? Screw their customers!

    Glad I got a HTC.

  • MushroomStamp

Make sure you have the insurance then just step on it. They replace the phone regardless what happened for 79.99

This article title is quite deceptive. An early adopter is anyone who purchased the phone early on. That’s not who this applies to. This only applies to those that went online and found the leaked version of Froyo for Droid X and installed it. That’s the modding community wich is a small subset of early adopters.

    Editorial fail.

    • tristan

putting “No upgrade path” in the title was very misleading…

  • General Zod

WTF is going on at Motorola.

    Note to Motorola:

You’re not Apple and this is OPEN SOURCE Android. Stop trying to control everything!!! You locked the bootloader because the small number of people that like to use custom ROMS do mean sh*t to you and the normal consumer doesn’t care. Modders are still customers that buy / own your products.

Definitely steering clear of Motorola no matter how good your phones are.

    • General Zod

      do mean sh*t to you

don’t mean sh*t to you MY BAD.

Meh, bs, and we all know it. We know that it is just a scare tactic that they are using. The easy fix is to support their devices instead of dragging their feet with the update paths but then not wanting people to load leaks. That is the one thing that irritates me about being on Android is the fragmentation. It’s like, ok….now everyone has 2.2, or should have gotten their OTA by now if not already manually updated, but why can only Nexus customers download Flash in the market?

BS again, the leaked Flash manually installed works fine on a Droid 1.

  • dima

All you people who are upset are confused. This is great news for us droidx owners. Now we don’t have to dodge the OTA update to make sure we don’t lose root. All the update files will be available within hours of the first OTA updates, but we will now have no trouble maintaining root and only using the parts of the update we need.

    Thanks Moto.

  • OneTwo

Scare tactic or not i flashed my X back to 2.1 just in case but kept the update around

  • garry

Well i got my droid x and even with the 2.1 its fast as hell. I do have the leak 2.2 but im going to hold off for now and see what happends. :)

  • Millertime

When is 2.2 going to be available????
    I’m really Jonesin’ for it!
The increase of ringer volume is going to be great.

  • Me
