DROID X videoed running custom ROM

General

Happy Monday to all those DROID X owners anxious to shoehorn a custom ROM onto their handsets. A Twitter user has posted of video of the DROID X running the Android 2.2, Sapphire AOSP 2.2 ROM. While the DROID X had been rooted, it had not yet been loaded with a custom ROM due to several extra security measures put in place by Motorola. We’ve got the 59-second video — complete with questionable background music — after the break. Hopefully an instruction set and stable build will surface next.

SWEEET!!! Something myself and 99.9% of other Droid X owners will never use or care about!!!!

I care. cvpcs is one bad ass rom. I have it running on my regular Droid and I’d love to get it on my X.

Buying any Android device, without wanting to take full advantage of custom ROM’s, is like buying a Corvette, and not wanting to drive above 60.

    • Jonesable

I dont see why he got down-ranked. Its true that a those who load custom roms are a small segment of the community….shrug

      • Calikid

Those who don’t take advantages of the all the features of a phone and have no idea what it can do are called iPhone users!!!

Why put so many security measures in. If people don’t mind voiding their warranty to muck around with it why not let them? It’s not as if a large percentage of owners will do this anyway.

I just don’t see the point in rooting lately when integral funtions like the camera no longer work correctly or apps are constanty force closing. Maybe its my lack of patience, but it just seems like a complete useless pain in the ass for people who use their phone for communcaion/media purposes.

You clearly don’t know WTF you are doing or talking about. I’m on 2.2 Froyo, rooted on the X and it runs like a dream. Nothing is broken.

I can’t remember the last time something was TRULY broken on my phone and I’ve been rooted, overclocked, and on custom roms since I got my phone over 7 months ago.

you posted this exact thing on droid-life today man can we move on ? if you don’t like it then wtf ? if you’d rather waste your time going to every site, why don’t you take that time to fix your force closes yourself ?

New to Android…coming from Blackberry and before that iphone. Familiar with jailbreaking and loading leaked os’s on my storm. What’s the purpose of the custom rom? It looks like the same UI. I don’t get what I’m missing. My DX is running flawlessly with 2.2.

    • OC’d Droid

      Sweet lord. Where to begin?
It’s built from source to start with ….go google that and come back when you’re done….

How about actally offering some assisance, instead of just berating someone who is just looking for help? Both of your comments have served no useful purpose, other than to chastise people for being ignorant.

I am using the original Moto Droid and have flashed several custom roms and really like the features available. A custom rom allows the devs to add in features that would not normally be available. Here are some features I like:
One feature that I really like on CyanogenMod and Sapphire is the ability to skip songs by long pressing the volume keys when the screen is off. Also they have added flac support and an equalizer for the droid. These features make it a much better device for music playback.
With a custom rom you can use wireless tether (something they say the droid can’t even do lol) without any additional monthly fee.
You can enable or disable JIT and Compcache as well as control your Android’s memory management settings and set custom cpu frequency profiles.
There are also extra options for your phone and contacts (search for cytown phone and wycontacts).
Cyanogen has allowed you to customize your power control widget.
You can choose which directions your phone rotates due to the sensor (you can choose all directions or only one orientation if you want).
You can change the system live wallpapers.
You can delete system apps that waste space and slow your phone down.
There are too many extra features to name them all but there are a few I like.

    DROIDDDDDDD!

My DX is rooted and overclocked, but don’t really care about a custom boot screen. The only time my device is booting would be after a factory reset or a s/w update. Droid lover for sure, but i agree who cares!?!

    • Doug

There is more to a custom ROM than just the boot screen. Much much more.

  • Celz

A custom rom is like an M5 or a Vette with a chip in it.. Doing mundane tasks one by one you won’t notice a difference but for the guys who dl 50 apps or push their phones to the limit its the only option because their is no Lambo phone out yet….

  • Allen Walker

wow that’s some terrible and quite old music in that video..

  • Chuck Norris

Wow a custom boot screen … tell me if there is some real evidence of some shmug cracking a military grade safety chip … or let me do it … cause im chuck norris and stuff

    • .:ROOT:.

      You’re such douche.

  • brisco

A custom rom helps you push your phone to the limits????? Looks like a boot screen to me. Ooh ahh…….

  • http://mindkilla.com Mindkilla

Droid X a beast of a phone, If I had Verizon, that would be my phone. I’m on AT&T so you know what I have, the A4 beast IPHONE 4.

  • mr.flores

So custom roms have a different boot screen and they make my DX faster than what it is? I understood jailbreaking my iphone to do things apple wouldn’t let me do and installing leaked os’s on my bb to have the latest software without having to wait on Verizon. But I don’t get why I want a custom rom? I can buy themes online, right?

I don’t even understand what you geeks are talking about. Doesn’t ROM stand for Read-only-memory? This is a video of a phone taking way too long to start, is there something else here?

geeks, join the human race, maybe you’ll figure out why we don’t like your software, your UIs, and your complicated devices. We need simpler, not more complicated.

    • justin

you don’t like it? here’s the door:

  • jsbach79

I saw this post on electronista.com yesterday. I hope the de of the ROM does post a stable install. To all the people who don’t understand what a rom is I just have one thing to say, ignorance is bliss…

  • fkljf

    ahahah!

Thats as slow as a WM phone!!

  • brisco

    Thanks for tha clarification walter.

  • http://www.absolutefiction.com [rono]

On this video, the front looks all black and seamless with capacitive buttons. Nicer than the actual device. :-)

  • Hector

Wow you guys are dumb, if you notice at the end of the video it showed the stock vanilla froyo, that means without blur and obv more tweaks. It is not just a bootscreen animation. Go to their website and inform yourself.

  • AT

This is not a custom ROM.
    Custom ROM=Tweaked Kernel

    Motorola Kernel =! Custom Rom
