WSJ: MetroPCS to launch LTE services next month

General

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a Samsung has executive publicly stated that U.S. pre-paid wireless provider MetroPCS will launch its new 4G LTE-based network next month. Jaebeom Choi, vice president of systems research and development for Samsung, quipped that MetroPCS will light-up their LTE network in Las Vegas and Dallas sometime in September. The company’s first LTE device will be the Samsung Craft, which we reported on earlier this month. If the VP’s statements are accurate, the company — which is currently the fifth largest wireless provider in the U.S. — will be the first Stateside wireless carrier to offer LTE services publicly. When contacted, MetroPCS declined to comment on the report. Now all the company needs is a better marketing campaign to promote their new service.

Some people believe that LTE is going to change the world or something to that effect. At the end of the day folks, it’s just a phone. 3G, 4G, blah, blah, blah. How about focusing on something that’s more important such as the economy or a cure for cancer….

You realize this is a tech site right?

    • Carmen

Wow. Do you feel like you did your part today? This isn’t a cancer blog, it’s a mobile devices and general technology blog. This is the type of article that I would expect on this blog.

If you only are thinking in terms of phones, you’ve just discounted at least half of the capabilities of LTE. For something that has tons of money being invested in it, that will develop opportunities for the economy. Do a little searching and you might be surprised how much wireless interacts with healthcare as a whole now and going forward.

Says the person with the iphone. Seriously how embarrassing is that.

Some of us don’t want to pay ~2500 dollars for a 2 year loan on a *phone* and would rather, uh i don’t know, donate it to charity or cancer research or anything but funnel it into two (apple and AT&T) of the most evil companies in America?

Thanks to the central banking systems, the economy is going to fluctuate simply by controlled interest rates. We don’t have to focus much more on it. Worse come worst serve, chapter 11 and start over.

Cure for cancer sounds really vague. What kind of cancers are you talking about? We do still need population control btw.

Why don’t we focus on you never commenting on this blog again. Then bgr will be one step closer to a better place.

I can see the point of the first post that was disliked. When LTE becomes available for all carriers in the future, I’m sure the world of cell phones won’t be any different. Just faster speeds I guess.

    • fanboyardee

What have YOU done to cure cancer??? What are you doing on BGR?!?

  • fp hc hi

Typical standard answer. People are working on those things, we need phones too.

I wonder how much money Metro can Scrape up to build a competitive network…..I doubt the average metro subscriber cares about 3G speeds let alone 4G…thats why their Prepaid.

Good luck taking from Sprint & and soon Verizons 4G base. They wont be able to stay under $60 for long

    • Tom Brady

Its likely more than tmobiles 3G or even EDGe covers.

    • abcd

what you don’t realize is that it doesn’t cost MetroPCS nearly as much to build and maintain a 4g network as say Sprint or Verizon. BTW Sprint is on wimax…

      • 3 Phones Jugglin

Yea your right….Because their Network before LTE was vast…

    • Topher86

Actually, metro customers do care about data speeds, us reps get asked about it all the time; and the whole notion they don’t care about these things because they’re prepaid customers is a pretty lame one. You’re stuck in that 2yr contract state of mind. If at&t or Vzw offered anything remotely close to what prepaid services offer, without jerking us on the actually service, I’d gladly go month to month for $80, and technically Sprint already has that if you buy a device out right…

U gotta love these small companies that’s willing to go to war against the giants of the industry…Love them or hate but its guys like Metro PCS because they keep the big guys from being complete douche’s…i mean dont get me wrong they are all douches, but not complete ones.

I suspect, too many or too big of a bong hit prior to having this picture taken.

Like the CEO of Moto, these guys always look ripped, lucky shites.

  • Kyle

Do you really think his name is Chad?

  • Jonathan:Brazil!

To gain some real attention, i suggest they add a LTE Android phone to their line-up. Doesn’t have to be up to EVO-Standards but just any Android phone on MetroPCS will give them some good attention.

  • ohmy

and here i thought metropcs was an MVNO co.
    guess not?
there service is still crap here in the bay area

i do like their commercials tho, their funny with the indian peeps in it

“The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a Samsung has executive publicly stated that”

    Er. What?

Do you need an editor? Or a writer? I can fulfill both functions. Contact if interested…

For some reason, the amount of posts on BGR with blatant and extremely basic grammatical errors has skyrocketed. It’s very upsetting.

      • fanboyardee

Kevin, I hear you. It is really annoying. By the way, the setup in the picture is truly awful. I mean, does it really cost anything to hide all of those wires? Amateurish…

  • Galen20K

I think its kind of amusing that Metro PCS is bringing out LTE first in the USA. ha

  • Canela67

Well this is definately a good for Metro but i think it would be better to add a few android smarthphones to their line of phones so they can take advantage of their LTE Network. Because if not then whats the point of having a 4G LTE network with crappy phones!

  • Metro&

MetroPCS will lunch its 4G Network service. I saw it very very fast. so cool^^^

  • Tokenwasp

Every once in a while I see a commercial that is so insultingly stupid, it causes me to permanently remove that product from my list of potential options.

This is why I will never eat at Quiznos, shop at Old Navy, or own a phone through Metro PCS.
