Sprint's EVO 4G rooted… again

General

We are a little late on reporting this one, as it got lost in the DROID Incredible melee that happened yesterday afternoon, however the Sprint EVO 4G — running Android 2.2 — has been rooted. The good people over at xda-developers have the write-up ready to go, although there is this warning:

My advice would just be to READ very carefully
through all the STEPS. It’s very easy to get confused if
your are just excited about it and are
trying to finish as soon as possible.

You’ve been warned! If you need the “roots” give the tutorial a shot. Enjoy!

this site doesnt like the Evo for some reason

    • Andrew Munchbach

This site has no issue with the EVO/Sprint, we just didn’t review it. We also didn’t review the iPhone 4, but no one seems to mention that.

      • Matt

I dunno did you mention you were going to review the ipHone 4 like you did the EVO and not follow through?

    • MONOPOLY MAN

Who cares. This phone is for 14 year old boys.

This (insert random Android phone with stupid name) has been rooted with every OS update has really gotten redundant. New OS releases for blackberry are released far more frequently, but never reported so why is every Android phone and its root exploit considered news?

Boy Genius is more of a Blackberry fan than you’ll ever know, newfag. They’re just slowly fading from the consumer market. To be honest, I wish RIM would quickly fade from my RSS reader.

      • Tom Brady

Im aware of his personal interest in blackberry as he was posting on Crackberry long before this site. And why fag? You sound insecure.

      • http://www.em-zero.com m0

        I am insecure. Hold me?

There is nothing exciting about a blackberry and no additional features you can by unlocking it. Consider it like this, you buy a pc from best buy with Windows 7 or Linux on it and they only give you regular user access. You would want to gain admin priv to do more with the pc, but with a blackberry there isn’t anymore you can do with it…. with devices that are locked down from the user de whatever reason, we want to do more with the device or just purely unlock its potential.

This isn’t a bash on blackberry but wysiwyg with every release.

    @ Andrew.

At this point, it would be too late to review the Evo. But the question I have is: Why was it not on your radar screen to review it in the first place. The Evo was a new generation phone with many firsts and powerful specs, yet it seemed to get neglected from your site. I think this is the reason for so much animosity towards the lack of review. If any phone was worthy of a review since the revolutionary introduction of the first iPhone, the Evo was it. A powerhouse phone with kick ass specs never to grace the wireless industry before.

As a consumer of the wireless industry for over 23 years, I love reading different informational sites such as this one to learn much. However, the disappointment of failing to review the Evo, really left me at a loss. The shear power and flexibility the Evo has brought to my everyday business and pleasure practices, has proven to be nothing short of awesome.

      Hi John–

It was a mistake not to review the unit; a mistake we won’t make again.

Thanks for the thought out question and I’m glad you’re enjoying the EVO :)

  • MobileGuru

    Awesome phone…even more so rooted

  • AndyS

This was great news to find out yesterday. I just got an Evo, and it shipped with 2.2, leaving me out of some of the fun. Now I get to see how much difference there is with the FPS lock removal hacks. Really want to see how much it improves the input lag.

  • slammer

Thanks for being candid and honest Andrew. I appreciate you taking the time to cordially respond to my constructive criticism.

In response to this report of rooting. I personally purchase phones on the premise of stock features to fulfill my needs. Hense my Evo purchase. I simply don’t believe I should have to “Jailbreak” or “Root” a phone to get what I want. However, this is important news for those that feel the need to modify the current device and hope it proves informative.

I think you meant “melee” when you said “malay”.

Wow! I read through that detail EVO “rooting” procedure and all I can ask is,…why in the world would someone want to put them self through that much pain? I can easily understand the diff btwn an EVO with Droid 2.1 vs one with Droid 2.2,…but I have to seriously ask would are the major gains for rooting an Android set? For instant, does rooting equates to a 3.0 V6 with Turbo vs the same engine without a Turbo,…all things being equal?

Another question,…once you root, are you rooted for life of the device,…or do you have to “root” again sometime down the road?

If you all the bloatware crap that was on the stock ROM trust me you would want to go through this!

      • Marc

        Plus free tethering too.

  • Swagger

    Andrew,

I wish you were more of jerk about this so it would be easier to have a legit beef with you.

That being said, I still don’t think it is too late for an EVO review. It was the first of the next gen phones. There is no excuse for the non review but it is what it is. Don’t f*** the Epic 4g review. Maybe a EVO vs. Epic showdown will appease us.

Evo vs epic vs iphone 4

    • Chris

…as long as you swap out that battery every 4 hours

      • jawman

4 hours? I know you’re being sarcastic, but you’re still an idiot. The reason the EVO got bad battery press is because people are dumbshits, plain and simple. The EVO battery cry is WAY overdone. People are just stupid. It has one of the largest screens (4.3″) to date, and does 4G. Turn 4G off when you’re not using it. Turn 3G off and turn WiFi on when you’re at home or at work/have access to a WiFi network. Turn WiFi off and 3G back on when you leave home/work. Set the screen brightness to auto. A 4.3″ display is of course going to use more battery than a 3.5″, 3.7″, or 4″ screen. Learn how to use a task killer PROPERLY (important). The battery on my EVO is at 5% right now, but it has been unplugged for 31 HOURS. Yes, that’s no typo, thirty one hours. So please, STFU when you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

  • Tony

From an outside point of view you guys. Specifically swagger, sound like a bunch of puss e’s asking for an evo review. You already have the phone and so do I so who the f cares.

  • Swagger

It’s the principal that we want an EVO review for the simple fact that this site bends over with a glob of ky jelly for any ATT and VZ phone.

  • Swagger

    *principle

  • phone_booger

haha my co-worker keeps saying “blueberry” instead of BlackBerry ror

  • slammer

I don’t think there is any need to beat a dead horse over this issue of past phone release reviews. Too many new devices coming out, are more relevant. Also, the need to compare microwaves or anything electronic to the iPhone is getting a little redundant. The iPhone is now mixed in with a huge variety of new choices of power enriched devices that simply allow one to get from point A to point B just as easy. I think it is more productive to concentrate on what new releases have as advantages over their predecessors. This is more informative to most consumers already nestled in with their brand of choice rather than the endless Roe Vs. Wade.

  • wtf

I’ll wait for an easier root. All I want to do is get rid of bloatware ghastly i’ll never touch (facebook, flicker, and the like, and get free WiFi tethering

Hi, I had the old blackberry tour and I upgrade to the HTC EVO, had it for 2 weeks and exchange it for the epic, but honestly there are some few things that I like from the epic and many others from the EVO, lets start.

I like how the power on bottom feels and where its located, also the integration with Picasa and the power plug and the earphone jack are located on top of the phone, and last but not least is when the screen is off and I get a text message or some one calls, it give me options, ie; if some one calls I drug up to answer, down to left ignore and the right one ignore with text (it’s a pre define text like “Ill call you soon I am driving”…….Everything else on the phone I DON’T LIKE IT, the keys on the keyboard is hard to type because they are very space out between keys, the hall interface of the phone is complicated, the fact that has a sliding keyboard there movable parts and that will eventually brake. Sound and battery life are ok. Also and very importante It does not play flash websites, like http://www.streetfire.net/

What I don’t like from the EVO that could be improve; power on bottom is just very low, ill make it like the Epic, also ill increase the battery life. Everything else, LOVE IT, I can watch my favorite episode from topgear at http://www.streetfire.net/ the all interface its grate and very much customizable than the Epic. Yes, the phone is a “little” big but its very slim compare to the Epic.

I was off my 30 days return policy with Sprint so I add another line and I got back the EVO, after first billing and getting mail in rebate Ill cancel second line and have the Epic as spare.

    Just Love the EVO.
