UK style Google Voice phone booths to start appearing in U.S.

General

At the same event where Google introduced voice calling in Gmail, the search giant also announced that it would be placing Google Voice phone booths in select U.S. locations. The GV stations, which will closely resemble the iconic red telephone booths in the U.K., will begin appearing on college campuses and in airports in the next few weeks. The purpose of the old-fashioned booths is to get people more acquainted with Google Voice, allowing them to see how GV’s voice call-quality compares with more traditional landline services. Google said they would release more details about the telephone-towers in the coming weeks.

They’ll make great homeless shelters in NYC.

    • Chut Pata

Yes. T.A.R.D.I.S looks very small from outside, but inside it is big enough to take all the homeless, and into the future along with Dr. Who.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Google but, have you ever tried using an “open” NYC public payphone?

  • Brswa

I always had an affinity for those red booths. Be cool to see them on this side of the pond.

Interesting marketing idea. Go Go Google

Love google voice. And would be great to see these in big numbers. Awesome if your battery dies.

  • Mohammad

this is a stupid idea. this wont succeed. not everyone is tech savvy.

    • Joe

What the hell is tech savvy about a phone booth? For christ sakes, those things were low-tech in the 90′s!

    • ViniD

you gotta be kidding me tech savvy, there is nothing techy about a phone booth or google voice

  • NuShrike

    How about a TARDIS instead?

    • redigits

My thoughts exactly! I saw this and thought “man, that thing reminds me of the TARDIS from Doctor Who; it’s going to be a hit!”

  • Joe

I love this. Google fuckin rocks.

  • Hip Grandpa

I hope they have rotary dial. This is a great idea. I have quicker access to make calls when I get a page.

If we stay the course, we are dead! WE ARE ALL DEAD!

  • WalterSobchak

In the uk these things were all filled with nude pictures of escorts. Will they be bringing that feature too?

  • Professor Stevens

So Google is offering free VoiP. The technology that takes your voice then converts into digital bits to be sent across the internet. So the question is what does Google do with your voice data?

    • John Connor

saves in a large central database where it is sorted out and collected by our own government. anyone that goes against the establishment will be silenced.

      • Marc

How is this different than the NSA’s and CIA’s taps in AT&T’s, Verizons, and etc. trunk lines?

      • Chut Pata

That is incorrect. Government gets it data from phone companies directly and legally. It is the big businesses like oil companies that buys the data, and silences everyone that goes against the big businesses as commies.

Rather ironic that they will resemble the classic UK phone booth considering that Google Voice is NOT AVAILABLE IN THE UK or anywhere else outside the US, for that matter.

    • Adam

thats strange, seeing as I have GV and am not in the US (nor was I in the US when I opened my G account many moons ago)

  • brisco

Go google! I will never see them in podunk boise though. And hip grandpa who the hell gets a page anymore? Get a smartphone use email or I’m. Put those pager company’s out on there ass!

  • Fly On The Wall

Now they can get some good shots of their own products to feature in their street views as they listen in on your conversation.

    Its a Win-Win!

  • Ace Of Space

I applaud Google for giving fresh opportunities to Local Graffiti Artists.

    You Go Google!

  • Jones

The booths are only red because Verizon threw a fit and threatened to lock down Android when Google wanted to make the them Magenta colored.

  • Christopher Baker

    I totally want one =]

  • john mccain

hands down, thats just an awesome idea.
