General

Earlier this month, we told you about the Sony Ericsson Vivaz; an S60 powered smartphone that was destined for AT&T. Today, via a press release, AT&T has made the mid-level handset official. The handset will have a quad-band GSM and UMTS/HSPA radio, 8.1 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, 3,2-inch 360 x 640 TFT nHD resistive touch-screen display, Bluetooth, aGPS, micro-SD card slot, and come in Galaxy Blue and Venus Ruby. The device will be priced at $79.99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate. You can tell how excited AT&T is about the S60 device by the brevity of its press release. We have said release ready for your scrutiny after the break.

    A resistive screen? Really?

I guess given the price point I can see the logic….

  • ras

For $80 after rebate, this is a compelling possibility. Unfortunately for Symbian it appears they are being relegated to low-end/entry level devices.

  • burnett

    cute form factor

  • iHater

As I will always and forever point out: Had this mid-level phone came out on T-mobile, you’d have at least 4 – 6 comments already about ‘This is why T-mo is #4′.

  • iHater

$130 with a $50 rebate isn’t bad… but a Captivate for a $0.01 is still better!! (look like 2 articles down from this one).

    • iphone > droid

Well this would suck on TEENmobile mostly because they only have metro coverage. Do they roam off of Cricket towers? Or are they still analog?

  • reamRIM

    resistive touchscreen???

    • Oh yeaaaaaaaa

A resistive screen recognized input by any contact. A stylus or regular pen could work this device.

More expensive devices (Droid, iPhone) use the heat from your skin to recognize input.

      • false

Actually, iphone/android handsets use screens that respond to static electricity.

      • ImpressMe

@ false. You beat me to it! Yay for knowledge.

      • Mitch

Resistive screens are crap. Who the hell uses a stylus anymore???

      • California Man

You don’t need a stylus to use a resistive screen….LOL

I have an old 5800 laying around that I still use occasionally for its great sounding music playback and WiFi and I’ve never used a stylus…..LOL

  • Swap Meet Louie

I’ve played around a bit with the unlocked import version of this device. It’s actually a pretty cool phone. I know all the fanboys will slag it cause its not an Apple or Android. But that’s why fanboys exist, god bless em’.

For someone looking for a good camera and video device on the cheap, it isn’t a bad choice.

  • now here’s the thing

This is not an attack on the phone, or AT&T itself. It’s an attack against all service providers. These days, buying a phone like this just doesn’t make sense, even if you don’t need the power of an android or iphone.

Cellular companies are forcing even basic feature phone customers to have SOME sort of data plan now, and it’s ridiculous. So as long as you HAVE to pay for THAT plan, why not just pitch in the extra 10 or 15 bucks a month to have a significantly better device in your pocket?

There’s no longer an incentive to buy a device like this!

    • Cold Dead Fingers

I agree, they should either take feature phones out, because I’d guess most people would go for Smart phones over dumb phones, or make cheaper feature phones. Having said that, this phone in particular is $80, which is about $120 less than most smart phones, unlike the some feature phones I’ve seen for around $120-150! Although, Symbian is………..not worth $80, i don’t think.

      • California Man

For $80 bucks, a person will get ALOT more functionality using crappy old Symbian than using the crap basics on a phone like the Samsung Gravity Touch or one of the LG Crapjams…..LOL

At least on this one, you can go get games and other apps to use on the phone.

Might not be iPhone or Android, but it beats the crap out of alot of phones in terms of it’s capabilities.

I’m not a big Symbian fan either, but I’d rather have this than the Samsung Behold 2. The Behold 2 may have been an Android Phone, but it would be hard to find a bigger pile of doo-doo than it was.

        I know, cause I had one….LOL

  • wallyson

When I first saw this phone announced several months ago I was like, “wow”! I also loved the Pro version with the keyboard. It is a nice small package with some very good specs. The HD Video is top notch and the camera takes excellent pics. I just couldn’t get over the resistive screen, the high price if buying an unlocked one and most importantly, the OS. For many it will be a great buy at $80.

  • California Man

Thats not always true. With T-Mobile you can get a feature phone and pay $10.00 for unlimited web or nothing at all as opposed to paying the MANDATORY $30.00? $40.00? a month for a “smart phone” data plan.

Alot of the feature type phones are bought on family plans and end up in the hands of kids.

As a parent, I’m not going to buy my 14 year old daughter and 12 year old son a Samsung Vibrant or a Droid Incredible and pay through the nose for the monthly service when all they want a phone for is to take pictures and send text msgs.

So, yes there is still a need and a market for lower end and feature phones.

    • Peter

Why does a 12 year old need a phone?

      • California Man

So they can keep in touch with me or their mother both of whom work at jobs that are not stationary (i.e office types)

  • Spdr-Mn

I really like the design, very sexy…

  • Jay

Anyone here notice all the new handsets going exclusively to at&t, is it related to iPhone 4 possibly going to VZ soon?

  • walt

It’s not too bad for the money. They have skinned over Symbian pretty well and it seems to be touch friendly. Not buying one, but it might not suck.

  • JJFNIGHTS80

Damn now I’m really stuck having trouble to decide the Vivaz with 720P HD camera phone or the X10 with the out of date 1.6V. Guess I can hold off till SONY announce their PlayStation phone which will be better than both of these models.

    • aria51

Why would you do that? You know that playstation phone will still be released with android 1.6 dum dum. LOL

      • Fly On The Wall

        Playstation Phone?

Is that anything like The Banana Phone?

Please tell me you are joking…..LOL

Do we have to start adding another chapter to The Decline of Western Civilization already!

    • Ace Of Space

      Screw the Playstation Phone!

I’m holding out for the Nintendo Super Mario Brothers Device.

  • TRV$

how the hell did this get 720p and the x10 didn’t! better get it on an update….

    • walt

Supposedly with the mythical 2.1 update on the X10 it’s supposed to include 720p video. Not sure why we have to wait for a OS upgrade when the could have done it as a stand alone OTA.

  • http://www.mydaily-gadget.com/ MyDaily-Gadget.com

Another Xperia, just with a different name.

  • non fan boy

Maybe its targeted towards women with nails that want a nice camera phone….
