Angry Birds flying on webOS

Gaming

If you’re a webOS die-hard, and are looking for a game so addictive it should come with a warning label, look no further. Palm and developer Rovio have just announced that the wildly popular game Angry Birds, which is already available for iOS devices, can now be purchased for your Palm Pre or Palm Pixi. The basic premise of the game has you slinging birds, who happen to look angry, towards obstacles in an effort to kill green pigs. The official game summary looks like this:

“Lemme tell ya, these ain’t no ordinary finches we’re talkin’ about. These here are the Angry Birds, the ones that’s gonna kick you in the ‘nads. And they’re the ones on your side. They must be from Galapadapados, or sumptin’.” – Col. Angus, Bird Expert. The survival of the Angry Birds is at stake. Dish out revenge on the green pigs who stole the Birds’ eggs. Use the unique destructive powers of the Angry Birds to lay waste to the pigs’ fortified castles. Angry Birds features hours of gameplay, challenging physics-based castle demolition, and lots of replay value. Each of the 150 levels requires logic, skill, and brute force to crush the enemy. Protect wildlife, or play Angry Birds!

The game can be purchased for $1.99 and requires webOS 1.4.5 or higher. If you need a new game on your Pre or Pixi we suggest giving Angry Birds a shot. Oh… if you figure out how to get past level 3-15 on the first board, do let us know.

I already beat this whole game BG

  • Max

I finished it too but thanks to video walkthroughs on youtube

Wow. They release it for webOS before Android? Really?

    • d-range

      Android:
No native SDK that works on many devices + too many handsets with crappy specs + too many different screen sizes, GPU’s, CPU’s + too many OS versions + too many cheapskates that want everything for free = not a great platform to develop commercial games for.

Funny how the Android crowd still hasn’t drawn conclusion from the total lack of interesting games on any Android phone. I’ll repeat it for them: Android is not a very good platform for games. It might be a great platform for all kinds of other reasons nonetheless, but for games it sucks.

      • Kesey

In regards to ‘too many cheapskates that want everything for free’ Android’s Free + Ads model is working for some developers.

        See here:
        http://arronla.com/2010/08/android-revenue-advanced-task-manager/

If you think Rovio wouldn’t earn more money with Angry Birds for Android (vs. webOS) you’re kidding yourself.

      • d-range

I doubt it. A task manager is not the same as a complex game like angry birds: it’s much cheaper to develop and it will work instantly on any Android device in existence, since it doesn’t have any specific CPU/GPU needs.

In contrast: a game like Angry Birds needs to run as native code (not in the Dalvik VM), and it probably needs a fair amount of GPU functions to run smoothly. You have neither on stock Android Java applications, so you’d have to use a native SDK, which limits the number of handsets your game will run. After that, count out all the pre-OpenGL ES 2.0 devices. Count out all devices with less than 320×480 screen sizes. Count out all devices running older Android versions. Etc. Eventually your game will probably run on less than 20% of all Android phones, with 3 times the required effort.

Seeing that games like Angry Birds aren’t exactly cheap to develop (check the credits, about 10 people worked on it), the financial risk is just too high. I’m not saying this because I don’t like Android, I’m simply reasoning from my own software-development background and looking at the current state of Android games, which is non-existent beyond the simplest of games imaginable.

      • Rob

Well good luck to you and the couple of other guys that develop for WebOS. The 80,000 app and growing Android market will miss you.

You make some good points about Android gaming… but you do realize, they -ARE- developing Angry Birds for Android? So it appears the developer disagree with you on this point.

      • Jarrod Lilly

here’s a video of angry birds being played on a droid 1.

      • dododo

Are you stupid or just ignorant? Angry Birds is already available for Android and supports different screen sizes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp-7FB61hq0 . Besides, the Pre and Pixi both have different screen sizes and Palm only has 2 WebOS devices that are already pretty much dead. Unless you want to count the pre plus as another device. I wouldnt even bother counting it as a good phone.

    • the shiz

Exactly. Wut up with that? I’d think this would be best on an Android (super) phone rather than PC 1st. What are the devs thinkin??

  • ken

WebOS>Android. Didn’t you get the memo?

    • Observer

The N900 had it before any WebOS Device. didn’t you get the Maemo?

      • ken

I had a Nokia in 2004. It’s hard to find one in states these days.

      • Ace Of Space

Actually they are easy to find in the States, unless you want a instant contract to go with it.

        Then it’s damn near impossible

  • Champ Ion

Oh boy, all the 8 year old boys & girls will be so excited. And the effeminate older guys.

webOS has released some really good stuff lately.

  • ken

Well if don’t know, you don’t have an iOS or WebOS device. Google/ Youtube it. You will want to play it. It’s additive like a drug.

  • Dave

Best iOS game ever. I too have 3 stars on all levels and I am anxiously waiting for the next update to be released.

  • Chris

For those of you saying that this will not be released for Android because it’s too hard to develop – learn how to use Google…

    From June:
    http://www.rovio.com/index.php?mact=Blogs,cntnt01,showentry,0&cntnt01entryid=24&cntnt01returnid=58

…that’s right, blog post demoing the Android version. There’s also a sign-up page to get notified when it’s released:
    http://android.angrybirds.com/

    • Chris

P.S. Sounds like Android version is only a week away:
      http://in.reuters.com/article/idINIndia-50894620100817

“The company plans to launch a version for Hewlett-Packard’s Palm next week and a version in about two weeks for phones based on Google’s Android, which are already selling in greater numbers than iPhones, Hed said.”

  • Iconic

Greatest game ever made…if you don’t agree with me then there is something wrong with your brain.

  • premaster

Rovio knows a superior operating system when he sees one. The palm pre has always been the gaming demon whe knew it could be.. it just never had widespread access to the right tools like the PDK. The floodgates have just opened with the release of webOS 1.4.5. Lets the games begin!

  • Jpartain89

just an fyi to the writer of this article, it HASN’t been released for pixi yet. They have some problems they’re workin out right now.

and to all the palm haters here, you don’t like it bc a) you haven’t used it, b) you bitch and complain about hardware (the pre can be overclocked to 1.2 ghz now, fyi) or c) you just don’t know the greatest phone OS Ever made if it kicked you in the balls, which webos is tempted to do. :D

    • I told you so.com

as well as the Palm Envy will be released to sprint then verizon this fall with specs like this:

      4″ LCD capacitive glass screen
      8MP camera with 720p recording
      Front facing camera
      960 x 640 resolution
      DLNA support
      1.2ghz CPU

watch HPalm run circles around the competition, Webos inferior I dont think so. this is the next level and the future

      WEBOS now powered by HP

  • Yodes

    @ D-Range

Even if this game would only run on ~20% of Android devices (which is doubtful anyways) it would still be accessible by more devices than any webOS device out there. Androids market penetration is far more reaching than webOS. No don’t take me as some Android fanboy because I’m not. WebOS is my favorite OS out there and i would own a webOS device is palm hadn’t screwed it up. If HP can turn the hardware around that will most assuredly be my next device.

  • phone_booger

    ror dis game rooks funni

  • I told you so.com

heres some confermation about the C40 coming Q4 to sprint enjoy.

    Level 3-15

  • maxras

For level 3-15 you have to shoot the bomb bird to the lower left corner and try to place it up against the first wooden beam on the very bottom of the structure. If you don’t get it very close to that wooden beam it’ll only take out the first two pigs. If you get it close enough you’ll take out the first three pigs in one shot. Then you sling the egg dropper all the way to the other side of the structure and drop your egg bomb as close to the right side of the structure as you can without touching it. If you do this right you will not only pass the level but you will do it with three stars.
