Samsung Galaxy Tab pictured running Android 2.2

General

Chinese website ifanr has been kind enough to snap several non-blurry candids of the 7-inch Samsung tablet known as the Galaxy Tab. The device is pictured running Android 2.2, although no build number was listed, and other specs reported by the website include: 1024 x 600 AMOLED display (they didn’t say “Super AMOLED,” but we’re assuming it will be), PowerVR SGX 540 graphics processor, 3.2 megapixel rear-facing camera, front-facing VGA camera, 3G (no bands listed), GPS, and Wi-Fi b/g/n. The device also appears to use some sort of 30-pin proprietary connector (similar to the Dell Streak and Apple iDevices). What do you think of the GalTab? More images after the break.

I think this will be a serious contender with the ipad.

  • Mikey

Either I’m going batshit crazy or that picture doesn’t show the SWYPE keyboard. Certainly not the same one as I see on my Desire.

I doubt the screen will be SuperAMOLED as there was talk of some issues with SuperAMOLED at that size. Time will tell.

Either way it’s still a stupid resolution and I’ll wait until 1024 x 768 comes out (Or something similar).

    • Andrew Munchbach

      I thought that same thing. 1024 x 600 is a funky resolution.

      • RJ

+1 I will wait for something with 1024×768. I had a netbook with 1024×600 and the resolution always seemed off.

      • Andrew Munchbach

Should note that I *think* the 1024 x 600 was speculation on the Chinese website’s part and not a resolution taken directly from the device. It is really hard to tell due to the translation.

      • stringer

1024×600 is pretty close to 16×9 aspect ratio (like Moto Droids 854×480)

      • Brian

It’s the “standard” netbook resolution, and yes, it’s horrible. The war on vertical pixels that has been launched in the last few years is baffling. Apparently those of us that use computing devices for purposes other than watching widescreen movies are a minority.

    • Joel

The keyboard is also conspicuously missing the microphone / voice-to-text button.

  • JPB

That is EXACTLY Apple’s 30 pin connector. Even the font color. Weird.

  • Akash Rahi

I think the iPad has this beat still…

  • Ed Cullen

That’s just a giant galaxy s, why would you need that in addition to whatever flavor of the month Droid you currently own? Android fanboys just lap up all the garbage thrown their way.

    • Doll

The iPad is just a giant iPod. Why would you need that in addition to the iPhone and iPod you already have? iFans just lap up all the garbage thrown their way.

      • Ed Cullen

Wow you are an idiot. It was written as a parody to people like you who blindly hate anything Apple. You went above and beyond your call of duty as a fandroid this morning.

      • motofooker

        damn your a douche.

      • Ummm

The iPad/iPod/iPhone are garbage? You’re an idiot. Do yourself a favor and don’t speak. Even if you’re not an Apple fan you know that statement you made is without merit.

      • Doll

I’m sorry to crush your entire world, but yes, iOS devices are garbage. It took damn year three years to make the iPhone a phone and feature wise, it’s still very half assed. How do you sell a phone without video recording, mms, copy and paste, multitasking, and WALLPAPERS? What an awesome way to party like it’s 1999. The iPad is garbage too. How do you make a device centered around internet usage without including Flash?! It doesn’t even have a USB port. Fail.

  • Raindog

Just so I have this straight: someone who chose the name “Ed Cullen” is complaining about people lapping up garbage?

  • TedP

Why does it have an Apple style connector ?

    • Ed Cullen

Samaung decided it was too much work to repackage Apple ideas and call them their own so instead they decided to just blatantly steal them.

      • motofooker

hows steve’s balls tasting these days ed?

    • ras

It’s probably manufactured by the same folks who make the iPad for Apple. Cheaper to use what they’ve already got than fab a new connector. Who knows? the 30-pin dock connector could become the tablet standard for connectivity wiht a pc.

      • TedP

mini (or micro) USB isn’t good enough?? I hate all these different cables.

      • Mike P

Unlikely Samsung make their own stuff. Why would they use Foxconn?
Why use a 30 pin proprietary connector that you would most likely need to pay for. Maybe Samsung would design their own but they aren’t going to use something apple did just to be sued.

    • sNaKe

Well because if you didnt know SAMSUNG was a big role of APPLE until this past year when APPLE decided to drop them off. SAMSUNG made and created all there audio, hardware..etc.

      • John

Samsung (the corporation) has many business divisions. Their chip manufacturing division, for instance, fabricates Apple’s A4 chip, currently found in the iPhone 4 and iPad. They also provide the flash and RAM hardware. This is just not for Apple, but for many other electronics companies.

Samsung’s consumer electronics divisions then must compete with the other electronics companies.

I personally think that no tablet is gonna be able to go head to head with the ipad, why? ill tell ya,

    1. itunes store, this is the one thing apple has over everyone! content and content delivery, something no other phone, or tablet has.

    2. running android, comparitively froyo is still in a developement stage, i dont think the ui is there yet, still clunky and choppy. ipad, ipod and iphone much smoother.

    lastly,

there will be a huge influx of tablets by christmas, blackbad, htc tablet, lg tablet, and now samsung jumping on board. again everyone is trying to mimic an apple product but with out content delivery they will all fail.

    just my two cents

    • scadole

no flash 10.1, no frontward facing camera, no multi-tasking, shackled to itunes… how is this better than an Android tablet with an NVIDIA tegra 2 chipset?

It still blows my mind that there is no flash support for a “revolutionary web” device.

      • slaguru

Sales will be the ultimate test.

If this is better than the iPad and the whole Apple experience then it will sell at better than 1 every 3 mins or what ever he iPad is going at the moment.

Want a bet on that ???

      • Ben Andrews

Sales do not mean a better device, people follow apple products because they see the name apple and automatically assume it’s the best. There have been plenty of other companies like Nokia and HTC pumping out high quality phones and computers long before apple came in with their pretty ads

      • ts

It is simple. Apple sells to the mass user which unfortunately means simple basic use.
I tried very hard to use iPhone but the thing irritated the shit out of me.
No such issues with Galaxy S. simply love the thing.
Finally something one can type without looking all the time.
I was able to migrate on my desk, Import export to swappable SD – Apple users (or iSheeps) can only dream of that. Why on earh I have to have iTunes ? I can swap my 32G SD card with my girlfriends one on the plaine. Copy music in the park .. keep on dreaming for that with apple pocket prison.
So every one plus if you think I’m right minus if do not agree but say why.
A yes the small little concept of desktop and shortcuts – can’t even imagine touch screen without those but for apple followers its OK. if you are ok with crumbs offered to you lap apple and sleep happy in your ignorance.
If you want to use your device – then get something useful.
For the ignorant probably young guy above who can’t remember how Microsoft had to save apple once and why quadras are no more… just wait to see how long the locked down overpriced platform will last :)

      • Mike P

        > “Sales will be the ultimate test.”
Android total Vs iPad is the only fair comparison here. Lets not forget that Android seems to now be outselling iPhones. Yes time will tell. Are you taking long term odds?

        > “If this is better than the iPad and the whole Apple experience then it will sell at better than 1 every 3 mins or what ever he iPad is going at the moment. ”

Flawed, you would have to compare all Android tablets to all iOS tablets. In other words Android tablets Vs iPad. The fact that Apple keep iOS closed doesn’t matter here, that is their choice.

        > “Want a bet on that ???”
        Long term, yes I do.

Also don’t forget Microsoft. Like them or hate them if they integrate xbox, Windows 8, WP 7 and a tablet then not only do they have by far the largest developer base to call on, and a unified Microsoft app store would murder the Apple app store in 2 years. Don’t count Microsoft out yet, or do but potentially at your very grave peril.

    • Ben Andrews

No offense but you can’t base your argument off of apple’s itunes store. 90% of the music I listen to doesn’t exist on the itunes store and if I want to drag and drop my stuff onto my ipod it’s a chore due to how locked down everything is. Don’t get me wrong, my ipod looks good and functions perfectly once everything is on it and I’m not messing around with itunes but I would never buy an apple product for web browsing/computing due to their restrictions on apps, mainly 3rd party and the fact that they don’t have flash. I know the new HTML will make flash obsolete but that’s years down the road.
One more thing, don’t dis android 2.2 froyo as “choppy” and “not as refined” it is the most stable/optimised version of android and runs perfectly smooth on my 2 year old G1 so until you use it don’t bash it.

      • ts

        Spot on
no drag and drop. And who would acctually buy something from web music store?

    • Takieyda

Personally I think that the Apple products are very innovative. Unfortunately, at the same time they are very restrictive as well. While other manufacturers may have similar products and ideas they certainly take those products and ideas to another level. Windows Mobile has had quite a few things that iOS comes out with as the new greatest thing. Same thing with Android. I can’t wait for a worthwhile Android tablet that is comparable to an iPad in at least screen resolution and battery life.

  • Nick Friction

I call bravo sierra. There is no way that Samsung would get licensing from Apple for the 30-pin connector. That thing is in every Apple device created (save for the actual computers) for the last 10 years.

Click the read link and check out the picture of just the connector… It is IDENTICAL to an Apple 30-pin…

    What’s going on here?

    • Bobby

I think I’m gonna concur until I see something more definitive. The connector, browser, and keyboard all look awfully Apple-esque, more so than seems reasonable. And in the last picture, the case looks completely squared off and boxy, which is nothing like how any of the Galaxy S phones look. To me, this looks like a cheaply made iPad ripoff that runs Android. But who knows, maybe I’ll be proven wrong when some official info comes out.

    • Herb

Has anybody stopped to think that this could be a photoshop job (sorry Steve!)? Several key features of the new Samsung keyboard are missing as pointed out earlier, I dont think Samsung would be so complimentary to Apple as to blatantly use a white, 30pin connector!!! would they?!

  • ras

Maybe they’re planning some kind of iTunes compatibility and think they have a chance of licensing the iPod software for Android?

Then again it may just be an early prototype they cobbled together with whatever they had lying around.

  • http://tablets-planet.com Scott

I like the Galaxy Pad now after seeing these pictures looks like it will be a nice product.

  • eddie b

If its super amoled, then this will easily be better than the iPad

  • ron g

the reason why flash is not on the ipad is because it is a dead tech, its to old to compete, not to mention it runs like crap needs a update every two days and viruses. i want my device to work and not work to get viruses. Thats y the ipad wins, the general public does not want to worry about those things, they just want their gadgets to work.
This is coming from a dell streak and ipad owner

    • Ben Andrews

How is flash dead tech? It’s used on like 70% of videos on the internet right now. Yes it will be, but not this year or next and since apple upgrades every year there’s no point in buying their beta tablet that doesn’t have full web capabilities

      • EndlessCT9A

And in addition, Flash is the predominant ad platform. It’ll be a while before agencies adopt HTML5 as the de facto ad serving platform.

  • FlahGal

It looks like the same connector that’s on the Dell Streak to me. I’ve been waiting for a decent 5 to 7-inch tablet for two years now. This just may be the one.

  • http://www.xpertdeveloper.com Avi

    Hi,
From picture i think it will be nice competition between this and iPad.
