Samsung Galaxy S gets DivX HD certification

General

Via a press release, Samsung is letting you know that its Galaxy S is “now DivX Certified for HD video playback at 720p resolution,” and that it is “the world’s first Android mobile phone that is DivX Certified for HD and the second overall DivX HD Certified phone.” DivX CEO, Kevin Hell, was quoted as saying, “We’re pleased that Samsung recognizes the importance of the DivX brand in providing their consumers with a seamless, high-quality entertainment experience.” To view movies in sweet, 720p HD, “consumers can load their video libraries of both standard definition and HD 720p movies [to] the DivX format on the internal and external memory.” There you have it. Anyone out there particularly fond of the DivX format?

    Wow 720 P – that’s…..standard.

    • dario

And it rocks on the Captivate. Standard if you one an Galaxy device. Otherwise you will need to stash your desktop and monitor in your pocket to get it on the go.

Kevin Hell is a totally rad name. I’m going to change my last name to “Hell” so I can be as rad as Kevin Hell.

There’s alot of adult movies with divX, imagine the possibilities, Lol let me stop. I think it’s great. The screen shows 720 like it’s 1080. So I’m happy. Can’t wait for my epic 4g

    @mykie, LOL
You should keep you last name as Mouse… ;+)

There is absolutely NO difference between 720P and 1080i or P on a screen THAT small.

You wouldn’t see a difference until you get up to about 50 inches, that is when you will start to see the pixalization different between 720 and 1080.

You’re wrong about that. You general 50″ figure is for standard 8-10′ viewing distances. You’re going to be watching this little tiny screen at maybe 1′ to 1.5′ away. So (just like a computer screen) your view on the resolution is going to be much tighter.

Of course, with a device that doesn’t even have the pixels to display much more than 480p neither of 1080p or 720p (let alone the lesser 1080i) is going to matter. Regular DVD quality is ideal for this device.

When viewing through the HDMI port is another matter entirely. In that case, (if you can even get it to work, which in most cases you can’t) standard rules apply and the phone becomes a computer (in essence) exporting it’s display (or a portion thereof).

There are a couple of problems with this, however:

      1) divx/xvid at 720p? Give me a break; I’ll take h.264 wrapped in an .mkv, thanks.
      2) Application support (this device may natively support divx/xvid in the media player that binds to HDMI) sucks on Android (atm) for HDMI-out. I’m waiting for CorePlayer to get in gear and give me some true support. Right now the standard media player sucks with codec support and the third-party media players don’t have HDMI-out capabilities yet. Not to mention that none of the ffmpeg products (like RockPlayer) support subtitles in mkv.

I see your point, but it seems obvious that Samsung intends people to watch 720p on the phone itself. The press release contains no mention of viewing videos over the HDMI cable, and specifically talks up the “unrivaled 4-inch screen”.

Honestly, this announcement reads to me like some marketing douchebag’s attempt to add a video buzzword to their product, with no concern for whether it actually makes sense. They hope that some soccer mom is going to wander into Best Buy and pick this up because “Hey, it has 720p!”.

      • JR

I agree with your points but my comments are based on the use of it and that is to watch it on a 4 inch screen. Agreed if your going to port it out to a 50+inch screen, otherwise, it doesn’t matter.

        Just a quick point:

h.264 in an mkv file has been branded as Divx Plus so there’s a chance that they will, at some point, include that capability.

      • Cashless

It plays mkv’s outta the box already.

      • James

Does it play MKV videos with soft subtitles?

Divx is pretty awesome in my opinion. When Ninjavideo.net (RIP) was up everything was in divx and it was amazing.

  • enaybee

oh yeah. i am a big fan of divx until v 8.0 which is a bit not too smoith. i have been rocking divx 720p on my captivate from day one.

  • WrlsFanatic

I also think much good could come from my last name being “Hell.”

But yeah, the one nice thing is that most of the videos I’ve seen in the wild are Divx, so it’s nice to know that the Epic will be able to play it… but I really have no way of knowing if it will actually play video files that I want it to until I get one in my hands. We shall see.

For a mobile device, DivX/Xvid makes a lot of sense. Because of the large number of encode formates a DivX container can hold, it means the phone, nor the user, has to spend time looking for the codecs required for every container format out there. On a desktop DivX is limiting and largely unnecessary due to the availability of codecs and the fact that most OSs ship with support for the most popular ones. (besides, we all know VLC plays anything /sarcasm)

  • Jamie

Who the hell still uses DivX?

  • YouKnowWho

I think being DivX compatible is a perfect option for smartphone users. I’m a movie junkie and I have to convert everything into mp4 in order to view it on my Motorola Droid. It would be a nice alternative to easy transfering of files.

    • razorloves

why do you bother converting. RockPlayer app works great for divx/xvid.
This is good that it will natively support divx. I cant imagine that the HD mention is really a marketing gimic. I hope they make it clear that it’s only beneficial if hooked to hd tv.

    Can android ever lose?

    Samsung Captivate ftw

    1 want to buy telephone

  • divx_movies_wont_play_on_vibrant

I’ve tried several times to upload my cinemanow divx movie purchase to my vibrant and the phone won’t play them saying that the file format is not recognized. I even did the whole certification code as specified by the divx site to no avail. Its all a bunch of hype, the phone (at least the tmobile) version wont play the files.

  • Little Z

help! I have i9000 i cant watch divx vids. How can you watch divx content on your phone? On divx dot com i cant even download the divx player on my galaxy!!
