Google Mobile app for iPhone gets push notifications

General

Today, Google announced that their Google Mobile App for Apple’s iPhone will be push notification compliant. Google Mobile will be able to push Google Calendar and Gmail notifications to your device and offers a handy quiet-time feature; for when you would prefer not to see or hear notifications. Google also boasts that the new code allows you to “go get you information faster — when looking for flight info, weather, stock quotes or currency conversions.” The new application is in the App Store now. Check it out and let us know what you think.

wish they’d fix their shitty BB apps now

wait, what? why wouldn’t anyone who uses gmail and google calendar not have it set up using activesync via the exchange account option on the iphone anyway? this update seems pointless, useless, etc… maybe when there wasn’t a push option for gmail in the past, but now this is too late to be meaningful.

“why wouldn’t anyone who uses gmail and google calendar not have it set up using activesync via the exchange account option on the iphone anyway?”

You answered your own question.. Most iPhone users dont use exchange.. That’s why

It’s free for anyone who uses Gmail and an iPhone. If anything the fact that not many use an Exchange account only begs the question as to why they haven’t been using the Gmail Exchange push even more (Prior to OS4 you could only have 1 Exchange account.)

Have they figured out how to embed a browser in the app so it doesn’t kick you out for every Google App in it?

LMAO. Blackberry losers get the shaft.

LMAO – BB already has true push duh. not poke and pull – you don’t have to turn push on with a BB. unlike iPhone and Android. one of the many things ppl overlook when they declare BB is behind the technology or BB is dead.

iCal supports CalDev so does Google Calendar. So right now what ever I add in Google Calender appears in my iCal and whatever I add in my iCal appears on my Google Calender in real time.

I hope this is just the path to finally get Google Voice on the iPhone. Push notification for your Google Voice SMS messages will be awesome.

If I get a Notification of a new txt I got to my Google Voice and then open the app to reply. I would be jumping for joy :)

Updated and yet there is no setting to enable this. #fail

Need Google Voice included with the app.

The push notifications can only be setup for a single account, even though you can add multiple. So if you have a personal Gmail account and one that you use for work with the Google Apps for Your Domain feature, you are out of luck.

Also the ActiveSync Exchange option that you can setup on the iPhone is not instant. I have my account setup both as IMAP and Exchange and the so called push email arrives exactly at the same time as IMAP, both of which are at least 5 minutes late. Google’s ActiveSync implementation sucks.

push notifications for my gmail account using th google app isn’t working for me. The app updates the notification badge on th eapp icon but does not send me a notification. Any1 else having this issue?

I’ve got exactly the same problem (badge updated but no sound or text alert)…
I tried to change the silent hours settings but it didn’t change anything.
I think I’m gonna keep GPush for now (it’s not official but at least it’s working ^^)

  • Chris

kinda pointless…wish i could just see my email within the app. it shuts down the app and redirects me to the webpage. 2 out of 5 stars IMO.

  • hank rearden

Wow, FAIL……as soon as I logged in, my notification count went to 2899….the total number of emails in my account. Google becomes more like Microsoft every day…..

This update is waste ! Everytime I click an app it launches it in Safari. Google mobile app is way behind even third party apps !

All of you that are complaining about the implementation of Google Apps on the iPhone. Ever think of blaming Apple instead? You might want to look into it.
