Samsung Galaxy S gets stock Android 2.1

mobile

For those Samsung Galaxy S-loving purists out there, you’ll be pleased to know that there is an option around the corner. Stock Android 2.1 has been running just fine on the Galaxy S, though there are some issues at this early stage in the game, namely the camera application not functioning. Once all the bugs are worked out, how many of you would rather run stock Android than Samsung’s TouchWiz interface? Video after the jump.

I guess I’m the only one…I’m on Sprint, eagerly awaiting the release of the Epic 4G, and I went to play around a bit with the Captivate at an AT&T store. I must say, I am very, very impressed. I’ve tried other Android phones and none are as smooth and fast as the Galaxy-S series (Droid X, EVO 4G, Droid2). But I actually didn’t mind “TouchWiz 3.0″ or whatever it’s called. Yeah, I respect those who at least wish they could turn off the handset makers’ custom skins/widgets/themes like this one and Sense UI, but I guess I’m the only one who thinks that plain Android is bland as hell, and that I’m totally ok with “TouchWiz.” In playing with it, it performed very fast and was super smooth and very responsive. I was amazed that it, of all things was a Samsung cell phone. You look at things where they could have make a really good device even better like the Eternity II on AT&T or the Instinct-series on Sprint. I hope this is a sign of better things to come with Samsung Mobile. Also, another nod to AT&T for a job well done, the HTC Aria, which runs HTC’s Sense UI… I wish my Hero had been able to be as responsive. It was a very nice device. A little too small for me if I were on AT&T, but it was fast, responsive, and multi-tasked very well. Goes to show, these skins/themes/widgets the handset makers are putting on top of Android aren’t that bad. And as an original G1 user, vanilla Android is boring as hell. Most people who want plain Android want to modify it anyway with some ROM that will make it perform different by having a unique UI. But aren’t you asking for Android not to be modified to begin with?

The ones that ATT are way slow, just removing the bloatware my Captivate got so much faster. Once u get you Epic your gonna love your phone. Samsung did an awsome job with these phones.

Samsung makes INCREDIBLE hardware. No one doubts that.

However, software relm is where they arent as on par with their hardware know-how. This is starting to change as one of their top ranking execs emphasized the importance of software as a key competitive advantage to have. So the future looks bright.

And awesome job on the stock android by this dev. Keep up the good work.

      They TouchWiz?

  • Milind

I was pleasantly surprised by TouchWiz. I toggled between LauncherPro Plus and TouchWiz for a few days and have settled down with TouchWiz now. After I made the “lag fix”, TouchWiz has been very nice. I love the music app. I much prefer this contacts (except for not being able to sync with “MyContacts” only) to the Cyanogen contacts on my G1. The ability to have widgets in the drop down is nice as well.

The beauty of Android is having choice, whether it be stock, TouchWiz, SenseUI, MotoBlur etc..

From a Nexus One owner running FroYo with CyanogenMod 6 R3!

I like the Samsung version of android on my Vibrant. It’s perfect when coupled with launcherpro. It has a better music player, alarm clock, video player, camera software than ones on stock 2.1 .I just can’t wait for the offical froyo update:)

Samsung i9000 is great. After having it, I found android system can also be very smooth…Before it, I use G1..

  • DROID sucks

If you aren’t a complete need you don’t have a choice. Oh yeah, DROID sucks.

    • WalterSobchak

      I don’t know if I’m a complete need or a complete want?

On my G1 I preferred a vanilla rom/cyanogen mod. But I love Touchwiz on my Captivate. I prefer the dialer, contacts, app drawer(minus the cheesy app icon backdrops) and the notification bar. Touchwiz makes the phone more useable for me.

Also why load vanilla 2.1? Just going straight to Froyo.

I can’t wait for touchwiz on my epic 4G. I hate plain android. I don’t want my phone to be like everybody else. Plain and old

    @walterS
Thank you for the insight to AT&T bloatware. I thought VZW was bad with the X but man, that is a laundry list of bullshit apps. I only have three Blockbuster (sucks) City ID (who cares)Skype (which is truly an evil app meant for mahem)and thats pretty much it. Will probabaly wait and see what 2.2 brings and if these apps can truly be shut down. Otherwise, rooting after 2.2 official and deleting once and for all. Why these phone companies feel the need to put rediculous and poorly executed apps on an a great OS is beyond me. My only guess is some exec got a kickback, or some bean counter “Crunched the numbers” Any of the people that devolped these phones would not put any of that crap on them.

    • WalterSobchak

I was surprised to see that list of 20+ bloats also. Good thing there are peter alfonsos in the world. Ill be jumping ship from my droid to whatever phone he gets next. I think he is leaning toward the fascinate if vzw is actually still gonna release it.
