webOS developer spots device with Retina-matching resolution in logs

Rumor

A few weeks ago, we told you about a foursquare application developer that discovered traces of webOS 2.0 in their application logs. While the information would have been very hard to fake, it would have been technically feasible due to the fact that foursquare’s API is open source. Today, PreCentral is reporting that a closed-source game titled Cloud Hopper has discovered traces of webOS 2.0 in their logs, along with a device that has a screen resolution of 640 x 960; the same resolution as the iPhone 4′s Retina display. Whether this device is a prototype of the fabled HP webOS tablet or – fingers crossed Palm’s next webOS smartphone, no one knows. It is nice to finally get a few snippets of information (as small as they are) to let us know that webOS hardware development is marching along… even if it is very slowly.

    My retina hurts.

Again, how about a reference to webOSroundup? Metrix is our product.

  • Kal El

We are marching & gonna bring it strong. Shout out to webOSRoundup’s Metrix to give us these cool rumors/leaks :)

I sure hope HP plans on bringing the heat with webOS all over the place. It’s a pretty solid OS overall. It just needs to be cared for more. Palm did a shit job on the upkeep of it. It had a lot of potential when it first came out, and people forgot about it almost instantly. Palm’s OS turned into some laughing joke, partially because 1.5 devices for it isn’t enough to get it spread around widely. Not when the iPhone and Android devices are crushing the market right now. HP, get Palm’s marketing team out the door and do something with this yourself.

” the same resolution as the iPhone 4’s Retina display. ”

    Oh god…

Don’t own a webOS phone but I am certain anyone who does doesn’t want to listen to some foaming at the mouth Apple fanboy spout idiotic Apple marketing terms littering their news about the OS.

    • Espia

      You’re an idiot.

  • ojmayo

I really can’t wait for them to come out with some new hardware. I dropped my pre not becuase of the OS but because of the crappy hardware(not including the CPU). I still love webOS and still think its probably the best OS out there.

  • BrainzBlown

You mean retina display from 18″ away.

  • ToeCutter

    YES!

This would be WAY cool. I had a Pre, and it was a slick little phone, but the screen was so small, it was difficult to make use of the web, etc.

I’ve used all three, and feel that WebOS is a GREAT smartphone OS, the hardware simply needs to catchup. I can still remember when the Palm LifeDrive was a high-end PDA. Palm needs to up the ante with their hardware. This would be a excellent start.

  • DaveNYC

whatev my audiovox had retina display in 2000.

  • Scott

    Will it run FacePalm?

  • 5wany

Come on Palm! Your the only mobile OS that can truly compete with iOS.
Could you imagine a 4″, 960×640 beast of a device. 8MP shooter. 2MP video call. All powered on a 1GHz chipset. *drool*

  • DT

Wouldn’t you need to know more than just the resolution to determine whether it qualifies as a ‘retina display’? In calculating the PPI you also need to know the screen size.

  • Gears

I dont understand why people are so crazy about webOS. I had it and all of the patches that made it at least operable and have since moved on to Android and the EVO. The webOS cards are overrated, it gives the phone a cluttered and disorganized look. I, like many other people, like the look of an organized homescreen with a background.

    • bj

Well good for you Gears…but how about a meaningful comment on the story instead of the usual

“nah nah nah nah, I’m better than you are, I’m better than you are” nonsense. The EVO is a sweet device but its not the end all be all for every user out there.

Now to the display…I’m not buying it, its easy to fake the info being passed onto metrix – gotta ask why the 960x 640 display didn’t show up the first time round, especially given that the first story specifically mentioned that the screen resolution of 480×320 could also mean a 960×640 resolution…a bit fishy IMO.

  • rafael

There is no such thing as a retina display; it’s just a term that apple labeled their screen resolution for the iphone 4 for marketing purposes. Which by the way, was only possible by doubling the screen resolution and keeping the same screen size from the previous iphone models. I’ll give them credit though, because as soon as people heard Retina Display from Steve Jobs mouth; people ate it as a revolutionary new display, lol!

    • Sean Young

And yet no other device increased their resolution. All the Droid phones run the crappy resolution on a large display. That’s why I refuse to buy the EVO / any > 4″ screen phone. Looks like 1995 days with 800 x 600 resolution.

  • MacMan

Facepalm lmao. On a serious note, palm is junk. If blackberry doesn’t get it together there going to be the next palm.

    • Hadapre

If you’ve never had webos shut the fcuk up

    • Oracle Of Orlando

Macman, you know how you could tell Palm was junk. They went out of business (well technically, they were bought for pennies by a company whose chief like to squeeze coworkers fun bags all day).

      • JG

You sure are clueless about what really was the cause of the firing of Hurd.

    • Gary Grinder

I heard they are changing the name to “WeblOwS”

  • Hadapre

I would drop my evo for a new webos phone…..had palm pre moved on to a bigger device not better os..webos is the shit…blows ios out -of-da-water…smooth,functional….the shit notification system…can’t wait.

    • Gary Weaver

That was a fascinating story. Please continue.

      • JG

that guy is the shit. bro. or dude. or whatever.

    • doug

I seriously considered moving to a Pre from my iphone, but the keyboard killed it. I look forward to what comes next.

  • Kyle

Webos is an amazing OS. Still usin my pre plus it’s great and my contracts up soon (only bought a year since the damn thing was so cheap) and I’m dying to see some new hardware. Please deliver HP!

  • Graf Wizard

I think a pie chart would have been better. Mmmmmm, pie.

  • Akash Rahi

I’d like to see a Palm Pre like device updated with nice specs.. I’d even give it a try. That means putting my iPhone back in the closet XD.

  • I told you so.com

people talk madd ish about Palm not knowing any facts, bunch of ignorant kids. First off Palm was bleeding already and was going to be bought, or go out of buisness anyway before Rubenstein brought Webos idea to palm. Rubenstien and the rest of the Palm company did a great job with what little resources they had, to make the company valuable enough for a giant like HP to purchase them for more then just patents. Now the new HPalm roadrunner will be running on a 4 inch screen, with have a 1.2 ghz processer a slide keyboard with webos 2.0 and a retna disply. First coming to sprint and Verizon this fall then AT&T early 2011. Yes Webos has been and will always be the best OS on the planet. Look at HP’s Q3 30 plus billion in profit world wide, they plan on taking WEBOS world wide and in 3 years watch the mindshare of Webos skyrocket and this weak fad of androids bite off of windows modile shell interface taper off big time. You will also witness not just the first webos tablet in 2011, but also a dual boot tablet running webos/windows 7. The dynasty starts here, and you heard it from me first….i told you so .com :)

“Hpalm the future hop aboard before theres no more room”

  • Matthew Newton

Does anyone know if HP or Palm is presenting at IFA September 3rd. I haven’t been able to find out whether or not they are, but could be a good time to announce a new product p)

  • Akash Rahi

In 2011 Apple will really make something just as comparable.
