Verizon Wireless offering pre-paid BlackBerry plans starting Sunday?

Exclusive

A new ninja has sent us in a tip stating that Verizon Wireless will begin offering pre-paid mobile users the ability to sign up for BlackBerry voice and data plans. The Verizon memo looks like this:

Release Date 8/22/10

RT 802616 – Prepay 3G Pricing & Devices
Systems Impacted: EROES (internal & external)

Overview:  Enables 3G & Blackberry devices with an email and web plan feature/bundle to be supported on Prepay. Prepaid customers will be billed for data similar to postpaid – i.e. mandatory data plan requirements for prepaid customers. (only pulls up monthly plans, brochure view)

RT 800992 RIM Blackberry – PREPAID
Systems Impacted: EROES (internal & external)

Overview:  Enable the offering of a Blackberry device and a email and web plan feature/bundle for Prepay customers  (defaults to monthly plans , brochure view)

It appears as though a $30 BlackBerry data plan will be mandatory just as it is for post-paid customers. We’re interested to know what hardware will be available and how it will be priced. We’ve reached out to Verizon Wireless for comment and will update the post when we hear back.

Thanks, S Mag ( I_M_Possible ) & Blu3live!

UPDATE: We’ve been given a copy of another Verizon pre-paid BlackBerry document. It’s ready for you after the break.

i see Big Red is looking to cover all their bases with all the changes they are making these days. gotta love competition !!

  • wtf

I see a high dollar pre paid plan and full priced berry minus any repair service

    • PandaBarr

The prepaid plan is literally $5 more than the postpay plan. The data plans even cost the exact same amount PLUS there are no sales taxes on prepay. So the 450 minute 64.99 talk and unlimited text plan plus $30 for data comes to 94.99 a month. The same plan on post pay is 59.99 + 29.99 + 15% taxes/surcharges etc = 103.49.

      Prepay = $95 , Postpay = $104

You have to pay sales tax when you buy prepay minutes or put money on a prepay account. It’s not 15% but you state sales tax rate. So in Indiana that $94.99 with 7% sales tax would come to $101.65. You’d actually have to put $95 on because it has to be an even dollar amount and Indiana also requires a .25 cent 911 fee per prepay transaction so it would be $101.90. Would be really close though I agree.

If you buy the cards retail. There are several places online you can buy cards/pins at a discount and not pay tax.

Better title for this article would have been “Blackberry going the way of the flip phone?”

Back when cell phones first started being widely used it was only businessmen or people with money. Then they were the first with blackberrys….see where im going with this?

    • Janet

wow, you’re the stupidest person on here!

  • Silver Fang

What BlackBerries would be available on this plan?

    • Chris

      8530

  • blu3live

Currently on a Verizon prepaid plan any phone that doesn’t require a data feature can be placed on prepaid, you just have to pay full retail for the device. With that said it is likely that the BlackBerry devices will be handled the same way. Prepaid Storm anyone?

But, when taking the PIB into account, that would most likely just be the Curve II and not any of the more higher end BlackBerry devices.

Blackberry has become the new “dumb phone”

    • PandaBarr

Ironically the only phone being left out of the new prepaid offerings is WinMo.

You’re a moron. You obviously have no clue about the capabilities of BlackBerry

  • history

Great. A way for the bum ass from philadelphia to get a deact quicker and a phone they don’t know how to use.

  • Chris

    Finally! BGR has some leaks

  • Chris

Needless to say, it will be grossly overpriced just like the rest of their prepay options.

$35 monthly Blackberry plans are available on Virgin Mobile USA, which has Sprint coverage. Can’t be beat.

    • blu3live

Actually, Verizon’s prepaid options aren’t bad if you do the monthly plan. The monthly plans are only 5 dollars more than a contract plan which after taxes on a regular plan winds up being cheaper.

  • bringit

RIM. Sharked has officially been jumped.

  • C. Baines

Pretty sure that prepaid Blackberries have been available for quite some time. I don’t understand where the elitist attitude is coming from.

  • Max

    Who gives a shit.

  • BDUS

Why would you buy an over price curve and pay 100 a month for service.hit up virgin for a curve with 300 minutes, unlimited everything for $25 a month on a Sprint 3g network.

    • Joe

Exactly, except minus MMS capability and a smaller 3G network, still…

      • rrt190

        and $10 for blackberry service.

  • Ed

Any one know if one can tag on international service with prepaid plan? Won’t matter if the only BB model offer in the prepaid that has no SIM card though.

  • Joe

No contract pre-paid on Virgin Mobile for a BlackBerry Curve 8530 is $35 a month. The phone cost $299. Quite a difference. You can’t send MMS on the Curve on VM though.

  • justme

@ B…. In indiana you don’t pay sales tax on prepaid products. Their is a new 25 cents surcharge to pay for 911 upgrades

  • Cricket

The blackberry curve 8530 has launched on cricket and metropcs several weeks ago. Not much hoopla on them.
Kudos for verizon to keep their customers from contemplating a switch to cricket on a 60$ a month plan.

And yes watch the fools of philly not pay the bill after the 1st month and deactivate. Monte Deyo&Robin Ambrosius should be ashamed of themselves, 90days please shove the PAID process up your ass we deal with people who cant get service from a real provider sprint,t-mo,att,verizon.

  • D@z3d

    Okay I got two questions:
I have a BlackBerry 8330 Does anyone Know if this phone would be included? I been waiting forever for them to come out with this damn prepaid Blackberry Plan but it doesn’t seem any different price wise than an actual contract. Also just a side question, I been hesitant to “flash” my Blackberry over to another company because of all the features not working properly, so if I flash a phone is there such a thing as “unflashing” a phone?

    • Cricket

get a cricket bb if you live in their market. 65$ per month including insurance…..cricket is an MVNO of Sprint so ur getting EVDO Rev A speeds and a capable broswer. if you flash a cdma blackberry onto our network there is no guarantee the internet will work properly

  • rrt190

    Well?

    • Jack

Well it looks like BG is wrong again? Can we have another guess please!

  • John

any word? can you please update this story

  • Ladidadi

I am extremely happy to see this. I was thinking of using Virgin Mobile, but their coverage is not up to par.

  • Agent 613

Expect an announcement soon. I was in a Manhattan Verizon Wireless store on Sunday and the manager let slip that he was expecting Big Red to make this official on Sunday, Sept. 5.
