Sprint Epic 4G video sit down in NYC

General

We were invited to sit down with Sprint to talk about the new Epic 4G, and we fielded some questions from you guys! Here’s the segment we did with David Owens, VP of Consumer marketing. So, HTC EVO 4G or the Epic 4G? Which one is it going to be?

P.S. Hopefully next time the aspect ratio won’t squish my head to make me look like a watermelon.

Not bad… Wish it was a little longer with more questions.

    Seedless?

  • Lebron

Did the VP for Sprint really say “Heavy Data Speeds”, shouldn’t it be “Faster Data Speeds”, I just started the video, I am not going to go any further. T-Mobile HSPA+ will kill 4G from Sprint any day….

What about plans to go to LTE?

  • lkssljk

another SMART question is..why take capacitive over resistive..or visa versa..no answer…

    • Sean Young

Serious? Resistive touch screen only works well with a stylus. Any type of finger navigated phone with multi touch requires a capacitive touch screen.

  • Tommy

Oh, my god! You mentioned my name and asked him my question!! Thank you!!! I was so shocked when I watched it that I repeated that part 3 times to make sure I heard right! lol, shameless to say, that was my one and probably only moment of fame!

    Thanks again! =)

    • Sean Young

      Your a celeb now Tommy!

  • Neo

Can you ask Sprint why they do not offer the option for a 1 year contracts?

    Thanks…

Mr. Owens states that one of the advantages of the Epic over the other 3 Galaxy-derived phones is that the Epic is the only one with a flash. This is incorrect, and he should know better. Verizon’s Fascinate may not have launched yet, but it was shown at E3 and clearly does have a flash. See here:

He also might want to pick a different adjective to describe the screen than “Vibrant.” T-Mobile, anyone?

  • ANDROID FTW!!

    GPS, GPS, GPS!!!

He dodged the question asked by BGR..sure the phone comes pre-packaged with Sprint Nav…but does the DANG GPS actually work?!

NEED AN TRANSCRIPT OR CLOSED CAPTION IM DEAF!

    • yaya

no need to yell buddy…the rest of us aren’t

    • mykie

      WHAT?!

  • Sean Young

You mention its running the latest, greatest Android. It’s running 2.1 correct? Not 2.2?

  • StevenHamburg

The aspect ratio didn’t seem to mess with the VP’s head…

    • Matt

lol i know right! some people are just in denial! haha

  • DK

Is it appropriate for BRG to have this kind of “promotional” interview?

Please correct me if I am wrong on this. I can’t remember seeing such an interview before on BRG.

  • Durango Jim

BGR, if your head looks like a watermellon with this aspect ratio, then the other guy’s must look like a banana in real life.

If HSPA+ can hit 4g speeds, is there some other unique benefit to a user of 4g??

    • ojmayo

of course. the point of moving to a new network technology is so you can continue to evolve to new iterations of it. HSPA+ is pretty much the end of the GSM family.

In addtion the transport of data over Wimax or LTE is much much cheaper than traditional CDMA or GSM families. Although HSPA+ can be used with an all IP backhaul it is not required and still not as efficient as Wimax or LTE.

      • mrw

I understand the benefit to the network operator, but is there a relative benefit to an end user?

  • Spdr-Mn

    So that’s what BoyGenius looks like!…He’s a lot older than I thought…

  • Grant

    Depth of focus much?
Any more and your faces would be blurred out..

  • Ron-Mexic0

It looked like a very controlled interview, but I still have to give Sprint props for doing it and being accessible.

  • HabibAKAJohn/Peter/Tom@SprintPOS

    The Fascinate has a flash

The front camera is next to worthless without Skype

4G is overhyped. I can’t believe they’re pushing it so hard with such limited coverage.

I like how he basically dodged the question about GPS, with no solid answer at all.

I understand that BGR couldn’t wring this guys neck out, but this seems like an advertisement.

    • Joe

Oh please…. but when LTE launches we all better watch out, right?! Even though it’s going to launch in less markets than Sprint has with 4G, and is going to be tiered so that if you actually use data you are going to start getting overages after 4 days of use… GTFO

Expectations for this video were set higher than normal because Boy Genius asked the community to respond with “insightful” questions.

    1. Boy Genius got to one of the more concerning issues- GPS…the response to that question is not in his control.
    2. The 1st part of the video probably had leader questions to get the conversation rolling
    3. The long relationship with sprint is needed so how much can we complain

…still wish other questions aired in the video, but I’m sure we’ll find those answers soon enough

Very sad. All I herd was spin. 4G are you kidding? Kansas City, KS has 4G but large chunks of the metro area are not covered. I live less than an hour from Sprint HQ and I don’t get 3G most of the time. Asking about aging phones didn’t come up. Pixi, Pre, and Hero are all a generation behind. By the end of a 2 year contract they will likely be 3 or 4 generations out of date. Better non-4G choices please.
