Skype mobile application to run on Verizon Wireless BREW feature phones

Software

It looks like Skype and Verizon Wireless have inked another deal to bring the Skype mobile application to more Verizon devices. In a blog post today, Skype announced they are “expanding the Skype mobile application onto a variety of Multimedia 3G phones with an app based on the BREW platform, including the LG enV TOUCH, LG Chocolate Touch and Samsung Reality.” The post boasts: “The Skype mobile app for Verizon Wireless 3G Multimedia phones works the same way it does on the carrier’s smartphones, letting you make free calls to friends and family on Skype, great value calls to landlines and mobile phones overseas, and send IMs to people on Skype anywhere in the world.” If you’re interested in getting Skype, you can text SKYPE to 2255 or visit the Media Center on your VZW BREW device. We’ve got the full announcement all linked up for you.

but does this count against the data rates? My wife has a chocolate touch and I pay $10/month for 25MB I think. Will skype calls deduct data from this allowance?

that’s what i want to know but no one knows apparently

Only to start up/sign in the service and to message. If you call, it goes over 1X Voice (Not data).

  • Wow

Wonder if it’s the same as the Droid version that only works on VZW and not WIFI. Onward to Fring.

Someone please explain why using Skype is of any benefit if you have a high minute plan. Is it primarily for foreign calls to other Skype users?

    • DInc

Out of country calls benefit the most. A good feature on the desktop version is the free video calling.

I get nauseous looking at BREW. RIP to my LG VX4400

One of the worst mobile apps. No wifi. Drains battery.

  • Wow….

Skype is so neutered on Verizon that it’s not even worth talking about, but here’s an explanation for those out of the loop:

    1. It can’t be used over Wifi
    2. It uses your Verizon minutes
    3. International calls are billed at different rates
    4. It disconnects and fails to dial far more frequently than regular calls

In other words, Skype allows Verizon customers to experience the misery of being on AT&T’s network.

    Priceless…

Does go over verizons voice and not data but it’s like calling on a night or weekend. International calls are only billed if they are to none skype users.

    • Steve

Using Skype with the iPhone on AT&T has none of those of those 4 downsides.

I’m glad I don’t have to deal with the “misery” of Verizon crippling my Skype app.

We need Skype working on other devices and providers than just Verizon. Kill fringe’s Skype access and ink a new deal with big red.

I’ve used Skype approximately 0 times since I switched to Verizon on July 15th.

  • Dream

    No Rogue!!!

  • futurejohn

Are you kidding me? Feature phones are getting Skype before Android? What is Skype thinking?

    • Tetero

Blame it on VZW and Skype exclusivity deal.

    • SOUTHERN MISS ELITE

      …The hell you talking about?????

  • Modern Man

Sype to Skype calls are free. If you use Skype and call someone else on Skype, it does not take out of your VZW mins.

This is why iPhone rules. Skype works on wifi or 3G ..for 3G it counts against data but most iphone people still have unlimited data..

  • Nikki

I have Skype on my Blackberry & it doesn’t use my Verizon minutes. I talk to my boyfriend in London free all the time so I’m not sure where you people are getting your info but Skype to Skype is FREE!

  • Ludovic

Does the Samsung Intensity II with Verizon support Skype-to-Skype calls?
