Microsoft shows off first wave of Windows Phone 7 games

Gaming

Late yesterday, Microsoft decided to shed a little light on exactly what the Windows Phone 7 gaming scene would look like at launch time. And we have to say… it’s looking pretty healthy. Microsoft listed sixty two different titles that it described as the “first wave” of games coming to its new mobile operating system. The titles include Asphalt 5, Assassins Creed, Guitar Hero 5, Splinter Cell Conviction, two Star Wars titles, and two offerings for those who fancy Zombie slaying. If you’re more of a lamer ( that’s lame-gamer) like myself, there are titles for you too: 3D Brick Breaker Revolution, Brain Challenge, Solitaire, The Oregon Trail, and UNO. The games will all be integrated into the Xbox Live feature of your shiny new Windows phone. It looks like Microsoft is going to come out swinging in the smartphone gaming space… and we say: good for them. Hit the jump to check out the full list of titles. Let us know if there is one in-particular that tickles your fancy.

So they were also able to port over a bunch of the newer titles from the last WinMo in addition to some new stuff, eh?

    Well that’s a start.

  • Subzero

It will take more than games to bring them back. Not all of us just play games on our phone. Although, that does sound like an impressive start.

Ironic coming from someone whose moniker is pulled straight from a classic arcade game Mortal Kombat.

Games are weak point – see Android. After that everything else is gravy as long as the OS is solid.

Bring them back? MS hasn’t gone anywhere. Like Steve Jobs said, “We might not be the first but we will be the best”, MS is attempting to take this approach to the design of their “new” mobile OS. Let’s not lose focus here, MS has played a significant role in contributing to the smartphone space over the past 10-12. If you really want to keep things in focus, this is really nothing more than WinMo 7.

Where are all the fart apps? I would also like to be able to pick from 180 different flashlight apps. iPhone FTL.

    Yeah, that really isn’t exciting.

Like you see ‘Halo Reach’ and think “oh, that might be alright.” Then you look and it is basically just a Halo news app. Way to go, MS.

Why is this taking so long?

  • DaMan

It would be nice if they actually integrated Win 7 in with future game releases for the 360. Have mini-games that can only be played from the Win 7 device which also contributes to the game play.

    @ Sub-Zero:
“Not all of us just play games on our phone”

I think that’s just a stupid statmement in general… are you suggesting that some platforms now are successful based on gaming? You’re joking, right? Where are these people who do more gaming on their phone than anything else? Right now, games on phones, even the iPhone, is an afterthough and a distraction. Something to do when you’re bored and barely anyone has really taken gaming on a cell to the next level… Nokia tried (failed horribly) and Apple is trying but real gamers don’t take them too seriously. Android games are a complete joke. MS is trying to use one success (Xbox Live) to pull in people to Windows Phone 7 and its a smart idea. So it doesn’t appeal to you… ok… move along then. It would be like me whining that video calling and front facing cameras isn’t enough to get me to buy iPhone… ok… so? That’s just me, not a bad thing about Apple.

    • Logicknot

I have to disagree. I am a real gamer and I play games on my iPhone all the time. Civilization Revolution is amazing on the iPhone and i know that isn’t some causal gamer game.

What? No Transformers War for Cybertron? Suck.

This is their platform’s best chance to have a distinct advantage to make inroads given the success of the Xbox. But clearly they’re still scrambling. They’ve been reluctant to let anyone peak behind the curtain on the game side and while you could say that’s possibly out of competitive advantage I think it’s mostly because they’re simply not going to be able to have this element firing on all cylinders in time for launch. Given the lifecycle of game development at major publishers and the fact that WP7 as a thought (much less a fully fleshed out platform) is only 18 months old means they simply haven’t had time to do it as good as they’d like for launch.

Still, I wish them well as it has gobs of potential once game developers leverage it properly and it maybe one of those things that doesn’t wow you at first, but gradually picks up steam over time.

damn those games look sweet…i think microsoft is gonna pull the greatest mobile revival yet..ppl think apps on iphone look good…those xna game are thru the roof and ppl mostly purchase games from mobile stores

  • Shamus

    Nahhh
Im waiting for the PlayStation Phone with actual game controls with android gingerbread for my gaming

  • Matt

More competition can only be good for us. I’ll be due to replace my EVO next summer so by that time there should be some good things going on.

Since I have a xbox 360 the integration or whatever could be useful for me..

All this should be sorted out by next summer..

If you want great hand-held gaming, get a PSP. Although I think that PSP commercial is a bit annoying, I agree that buying a phone to play games is ridiculous. Pay $99 and get a hand-held gaming device and leave the smart phones to those who use the smart features.

I play my PS3 and 360 at home, more than I should but not as much as I would like, but I don’t need a phone that is centered on gaming. My phone is for keeping my life in order and making calls; if I want to play serious games, than I will do it on a gaming device.

  • MikeD

A phone is meant to be a phone first. Gaming is a second to third tier of importance.

Hardcore gaming on a phone is a bad idea because it’ll burns more power than any other task on the smartphone. Meaning will you have the power to make a call or check email when your done playing? Remember Hardcore gamers play for hours at a time.

Carry a cord and or an extra battery my friends.

complacency never got anyone anywhere. i think its great that handset makers are pushing the envelope on what you can accomplish on a phone. This year we saw the first snapdragon processors, then hummingbird, next qualcomm is said to be shipping its 1.5Ghz dual core chips, nvidia is getting in the mix with tegra gpu’s for mobile platforms….its exciting as hell!

why leave it to psp when you can have the option of playing next gen gaming on your phone??

if you dont use it, so what? its the option thats enticing. even if i didnt use it, id still like the option of being able to game with ps3 or xbox-like graphics. who the hell wouldnt?

  • alexz

aren’t corporate users the bread and butter of the WinMo platform…..I am really surprised they are approaching it from a gamer angle…..they may end up losing users to RIM and other platforms if they go this route…..like some others I am not too interested in gaming but having a phone tightly integrated with Office and Exchange mail is more appealing….as long time winmo user I just upgraded to a Palm Pre + from a Moto Q9c….

    • Murani Lewis

Judging from your comment I see a decided lack of information. Windows Phone 7 is tightly integrated with Office and Exchange and the collaborative work tools are awesome.

Gaming is one of the featured parts of the phone to help set it apart from others but its not what the phone is being centered and built around.

Social integration is the main theme of the OS.

woot!!! this is great. can’t wait for Crackdown 2, Splinter Cell, n all the zombie games lol

  • Ifa

Just coool! let these platforms up the ante on each other for our great pleasure so we can choose and let them make some big bucks out of us. Seriously why arguying, just enjoy it when availaible or move on to your favourite platform!!!

  • john

i played a simple homerunner battle 3d game on my droid today and it drained the batter like crazy….hardcore gaming on a phone is a bad idea
