Facebook rolling out location based service tomorrow?

General

Facebook has been sending out invitations to media outlets for an event on Wednesday the 18th where they will “provide an update on the service’s features and products” of the company. What new services and products the company may unveil is still unknown and up for speculation. However, AllThingsD is reporting that “a multitude of sources inside Facebook” have indicated that the social networking giant will be announcing a foursquare-like, geo-location, check-in service at tomorrows event. The report goes on to say that Facebook is likely to, “integrate other third-party services and will give developers on Facebook’s platform geo-location capabilities.” The event starts tomorrow at 6:00 PM Pacific Time. We’ll be sure to update you on what, if anything, Facebook announces.

    FourSquare.

Mark and “his” silly billion dollar ideas….

  • Roberto

Oh, great. Let me guess: they’re also rolling out about a dozen new privacy settings, all defaulted to “public”, too. !@#$!

  • WalterSobchak

    I sure hope so!
If there is one thing I have always said about Facebook, and all my superficial Facebook friends, it’s that they just don’t know where I am enough.
Right now they only know where I was, thanks to everyone that posts pictures without my permission, but now they will know where I am.
    Thanks, Zuck.

How is posting pictures of where your at by your friends the creator of facebooks issue??? Maybe you should take that up with your friends who post them…

      • WalterSobchak

I didn’t say that was “the” issue, I said it was an issue. Its all part of a greater netiquette that we need to develop.

Foursquare is already facebook integrated so this is stupid….also when is the FACEBOOK android app going to get chat and NOT suck? The Faceook iphone app rules two years ago and androids version is nothing you can root your way into working.

    • WalterSobchak

I spoke with a friend recently on the mobile development team. She said they don’t care about mobile, and more specifically don’t care about android. She said something about the “graph”.
Also facebook employees get either a blackberry or an iphone, so I’m sure that also has something to do with it.

And that is why facebook will inevitably fall. They think that they”are”the market, not part of it. Maybe they need a more mature CEO?

      • X Glansburg

Blackberrys version is constantly and geting better and i think that is why facebook will go on much longer than many think. Regardless of what may be selling best right now, blackberry ownership is higher than them all.

I love my facebook people knowing when I am not home. What harm could that bring!

Yeah!, a whole new set of fake friends.

  • Josh

    I love Facebook!

  • Jake

So I go to a shady gentlemen’s club, become ‘mayor’ and FB follows me? This might bring trouble to the workplace.

  • Sliznut

Foursquare really is not useful at all. I don’t see why anything similar would be integrated. It’s the ultimate stalker tool. lol

As if facebook didnt have enough privacy issues

Employers, Police investigators, Professors, etc now have another tool at their disposal to use against you.

Yet people stil justify having one…..deleted mine.

    • X Glansburg

They can use it against you if you don’t know how to use the privacy controls. I didn’t want anyone not my friend to have access to my info, done. Spring break 06 pictures private, untagged and life goes on.

A BS, masters, Federal internship and a decent entry level job in a classified position all while having a facebook profile. Done. Just be smart people. Social networking is great. Just remember things from childhood like don’t take candy from strangers, apply to now and you will be safe.

  • Stop Complaining

I am tired of hearing people complain about facebook privacy. If you dont like facebook delete your account, Stop complaining about it, and yet still posting your pictures on it.

Also, if all your friends on there are “superficial” that’s your fault, not facebook. You have the ability to ignore friend requests, delete friends, etc……

Keep your privacy settings to friends only, limit who you add as a friend, and heres an idea, dont have your boss, employer or company HR person as a friend.. Pretty simple.

    • WalterSobchak

Delete Facebook and you won’t be able to screen the pictures of yourself that are inevitably going up.
I don’t know about you but I have a lot of friends with cameras, and I get obnoxiously drunk all of the time. Those two don’t go well together. I liked it back in high school and college when those embarrassing photos went into a box of embarrassing photos, promising only to surface if you ever ran for office.
I keep a Fbook account just to remove photo tags. Have not added a piece of info in 3 years, not one status update, not liked/disliked one status update, never checked in, never put what I had for dinner. It is just to delete embarrassing photos.

      • Stop Complaining

here is a thought, don’t get stupid drunk. Then you dont have to worry about friends posting those pictures up.

      • WalterSobchak

        Being facetious scro, lighten up.

      • V

You realize you can’t be “tagged” in pictures if you don’t have an account? Also, if people would set the privacy settings on photo albums then it wouldn’t even be an issue…it’s as simple as having some common sense.

    • X Glansburg

Amen. Im convinced the people who hate facebook either have something to hide or not many friends. Those who just don’t like it aren’t the ones actively speaking out against it.

  • Livin the good life

Better yet…don’t do (or at least don’t publicize) conduct that would or could jeopardize your professional standing. Try private messages if you can’t help but share your escapades with your pals.

Between the products and the self-promotions what’s left of any social networking on Facebook anymore? “integrate other third-party services and will give developers on Facebook’s platform geo-location capabilities.” You mean, like, there aren’t enough predators on Facebook already?

  • http://www.webhostinglogic.com Hippy Hop

What is so important with location? I mean, if someone is really your friend over at FB, wouldn’t it be nice just to ask your friend where he or she is from or current location? Why is there a need to show it?

  • Gavin

The announcement may have something to do with what Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said in April on the official Facebook blog.

You know, it’s already bad enough that FB connect has essentially replaced accounts on most websites. Now when I leave the house, is FB going to post “XXX is leaving his house!” or “XXX is now home.”

    No thanks.
