Samsung Galaxy Tab European firmware reveals device details

Rumor

A leaked firmware for Samsung’s Galaxy Tab may give us a little more intel on what exactly the giant Galaxy S might be toting. The leaked software is for the European version of the device has build number P1000XJH3, and a build date of August 10, 2010. Here are some of the vitals the software firmware reveals according to oled-display.net:

  • Screen resolution 480 x 800
  • Camera Max resolution 2048 x 1536
  • Camcorder Max resolution 2048 x 1536 (unconfirmed)
  • Front cam Max resolution 240 x 320
  • CPU Profile ARM11
  • CPU Core S5PC110
  • CPU speed 1.0 GHz
  • Flash
  • GPS
  • Wi-Fi
  • SyncML support
  • Swype
  • JavaScript 1.5
  • Bluetooth
  • Android 2.2

While not explicitly mentioned in the specs, we would have a hard time imagining that Samsung would release this bad boy with anything but a Super AMOLED display… but 480 x 800 resolution? What do you think? Impressed with the stats thus far?

I think it will do well in the right markets depending on the price. Interesting to see how a screen that size works being 4″ phones and 10″ ipads/netbooks seems to be the standard.

Sorry folks, this is a bunch of bad info, to be taken with a grain of salt. Here’s why…

      A) The S5PC110 is not an ARM11 CPU, it’s a modified Cortex-A8. It’s the same CPU that’s in all of the Galaxy S phones, known as Hummingbird. I’ve written extensively about this CPU; Google “Hummingbird vs Snapdragon” to see what I mean.

      B) Additionally, Samsung has a tablet CPU, S5PV210, which it would make sense for them to use instead of Hummingbird. It was released alongside the S5PC110 as a sister chip designed specifically for mobile applications and features the dual memory controllers a tablet PC would need for applications with the significantly larger textures that tend to run on these larger screens. An example of this is the iPad; the A4 CPU is very similar to the one in the iPhone 4 but features dual memory controllers to provide the necessary memory bandwidth.

      C) 480×800? What a joke, that resolution becomes inadequate on anything larger than a 4.5 inch screen. It’s very doubtful that a manufacturer like Samsung which makes high-quality displays would allow this to happen.

      D) 320×240 camera? That’s ridiculous as well. 640×480 is VGA quality, or 0.3 MP. 320×240 is 0.076 MP… so horribly low as to be worthless. Given that current Galaxy S phones with front-facing cameras have a minimum of VGA resolution, it doesn’t seem likely that the Tab would feature such a worthless camera.

      E) Continuing this trend, a 2048 x 1536 camera is 3 MP… pretty weak for a primary camera too. C’mon…

More likely, this is a list of MINIMUM hardware requirements the firmware supports, NOT what’s actually contained in the Samsung Tab.

“a list of MINIMUM hardware requirements”

I agree … all good points!

When was the last device Samsung put such a crappy camera in?

These Specs would only make sense, if they were cutting corners to keep the price in line with the Galaxy Phones.

      • Electrofreak

But then who would buy it? :-p

With smartphones as big as they are getting these devices including the ipad are becoming less and less desireable. They do nothing different, just a bigger screen. Smartphones will either get bigger or these things simply wont be around long term, either way it’s dismal if anything….

I use my iPad as a web browser mainly, yes I could browse with my iPhone but the experience is better on the iPad and the battery last a long long time. The tablets are awesome for people that need a laptop for work.

      • JHUK

I would say these new tablets (iPads, Galaxy Tablets etc) are actually ideal for people who Don’t need a laptop for work.

I work on a powerful desktop machine in the office with multiple screens and don’t actually need a laptop, but If I wanted to bring home research or a few documents these tablets would be ideal

    WTF @ “Screen resolution 480 x 800″

    • http://www.maemofanatics.com Blaxx

WTF indeed. At first I thought it must be a mistake but take a closer look at the picture above and yeah, it looks about right. No matter how good their Super AMOLED screen is, that’s not gonna look good.

  • Frank

Ooops – I though it was a comparo between the Samsung and the DroidX.

  • jbo

    Prices?

  • Android

I think its OK that both of those look like the 2-year old iPhone 3G.

  • Brian

As far as resolution goes, I think they need to do what it takes to have the best chance at the most applications to compete with the iPad – and that resolution is already widely used. Also, how large is the screen? That will make a difference too.

I have been an anti-Apple dude for a long time but must say that I really enjoy the iPad – and a big reason is the richness of the applications that exist for it. Without worthwhile applications on the bigger screen, the form factor will not work out on Android.

Don’t get me wrong, my Apple core is still pretty rotten and I would prefer to be using an Android device – if it can be delivered with strong application support.

    • brando

Apps are def a plus, however all I really want is a device that acts as an E-reader and a web browser/email device. Put those to functions on a big screen with solid battery life and I’m sold.

If a device gets those two things done well, the apps will follow.

  • Akash Rahi

    iPad wins.

  • Stephen

Wow, it has a smaller resolution than the iPhone 4? 1GHz? No thanks, Samsung. I’m still waiting for the WeTab! :)

  • ernie

Seems the resolution is wrong, out of whack. Heck, the phone looks better than the pad.

  • PAPINYC

    @Awash Rahi

You are so 1000% correct, iPad wins; video conference and video chat on wi-fi is the BOMB’!
And, all that Flash content on websites just streams so flawlessly and effortlessly.

    • El Oscuro Secreto

And which device do you have?

Sound like you are playing the bench to me..

      • ernie

You have to know Papi. He HATES everything apple, more than likely cause he can’t afford them, but other than that because he just doesn’t get it. He LOVES anything Google, including their NEW stance on net neutrality. Let’s see how he likes not being able to voice his opinions on sites like BGR because they can’t compete with the guys with the deep pockets to vie for air time!

      • Electrofreak

Wow, you’re full of yourself, aren’t you?

  • Derek

Terrible screen resolution. Needs to be much higher.

  • http://twitter.com/jexe Jesse B

Nice to see the competition innovating with totally original form factors that we’ve never seen anywhere else.

  • non bias

samsung wants SAMOLED but the cost and time to make it ……

  • Joel

On my Dell Streak they’ve done something to some of the OS elements (icons, text, etc) so that even though it’s a standard 800×480 it can display much more than say a Droid running at the same resolution.

The icons/lists/etc “should” take up the same amount of room on a Streak as they do on a Droid, but they don’t.

See this link for examples of what I’m talking about in the Android market app. It’s not just physically bigger than a Droid, it displays more info on the screen too. That sight has other examples where you can see more icons/space/widgets on the Streak than would fit on the Droid.

Maybe Samsung and these other vendors are doing this?

  • PAPINYC

    @Ernie

What’s wrong, Bert didn’t give it to you good last night?

For the record, I don’t hate Apple; what I do dislike are brainwashed humans.

  • Big Papi

God, when will a tablet come out with USB support so I can accomplish some real work with it…is this too hard to put out…maybe HP will not dissapoint…I so want a tablet device but they aren’t worth it right now

  • DaveM

The resolution should be doubled. That way it can be easily scaled, but still have the ability to run higher rez apps. The DEll streak is already pushing that resolution and it will just look more pixelated at 7″.

  • DaveM

I should say the lines of resolution.

  • Cameron Howard

    ARMv11?!?!?!?!?!?! What is this 2008?

    • Electrofreak

It’s wrong. The S5PC110 isn’t an ARM11. This is what happens when tech blogs listen to people who have no idea what they’re talking about. :-

  • PAPINYC

    @Electrofreak

Finally, someone with some valuable info.

    Thanks!
