RealD takes home MMC's technology 'Breakthrough of the Year' award, presented by Crest 3D

Mail.com held its annual “Breakthrough of the Year” awards show in Los Angeles last night, and — in honor of BGR — they added a technology category to this year’s show. The winner of this year’s Breakthrough award in technology category was RealD. The official line goes something like this: “Using the characteristics of human perception to create a 3D image, the 2010 Breakthrough in Technology award recognizes RealD for the significant impact its breakthrough patented technology has had on our lives. From entertainment to piloting the Mars Rover, heads-up displays for military jets and robotic medical procedures.” For those of you who aren’t familiar with RealD, they are the company behind the cinema technology used to display movies in 3D (e.g. Avatar, Despicable Me, Toy Story 3, etc.). RealD’s self-written elevator speech looks like this:

We license our RealD Cinema Systems to motion picture exhibitors that show 3D motion pictures and alternative 3D content. We also provide our RealD Format, active and passive eyewear, and display and gaming technologies to consumer electronics manufacturers and content producers and distributors to enable the delivery and viewing of 3D content on high definition televisions, laptops and other displays.

Congrats to RealD! Hit the read link to see all of the other award winners. Anyone seen a 3D flick in a RealD cinema?

Looks like Dave Attel sobered up for the award.

What year is it? 1984? I’m simply shocked at the amount of people who are actually interested in 3D films. Most people act like its a new technology. Its kind of pathetic and something I’m not getting sucked into..

Christ, a 3D HDTV? Give me a break.

Hey, slightly off topic, but I went to Lollapalooza in Chicago last week and Sony had a PS tent… and inside were demos you could play of 3D games on 3D tv’s with 3D glasses.

Look, I know everyone is going to say I’m hating, but I am not… the shit was garbage. Pure, absolute GARBAGE. They had 2 games, Wipeout (or a Wipeout clone, I didn’t really catch the title) and an MLB game. I swear to god I put on the glasses and nothing changed. No depth, nothing popping out… at the most I could see outlines around things. Then I went to look at the Wipeout game and it was worse… but oh, whoa, hey… the Sony tent rep wanted to make sure I knew: The glasses I was wearing were calibrated for the MLB game… oh, okay, so let me get those other glasses calibrated for this game… hmm.. yeah, still the f’n same. STILL THE F’N SAME = Crap, garbage. You gotta be a fool, a complete fool, to buy into any of this.

I have seen the death of 3D, and it’s name is Sony Playstation. Even if you are a 3D fan… I’m telling you, be wary of Sony because if that crap is supposed to convince anyone, it’s not and it’s going to kill it for you 3D fans. I’m not the only one either, EVERYBODY coming out that tent were saying things like, “I don’t get it” and “It didn’t look like it was 3D”.
