iTV rumors have ITV trademark holder preparing for battle?

Rumor

Remember that time Apple decided to make a cell phone, and called it the iPhone? Remember how Cisco already owned that name and Apple settled a lawsuit out of court to license the rights to that name? Well, if Apple decides — as rumors say they may — to rename their Apple TV product to iTV, things might not be quite so easy. Mike Large, director of communications at ITV in the U.K. told Pocket-link that it would “vigorously defend” the company’s intellectual property; including its namesake. ITV is one of the U.K.’s oldest commercial television networks, and began broadcasting in 1955.

The company did not specifically say that they would go after the U.S. electronics maker should they change their set-top box’s product name, but they did say that ITV was “highly valued” and that they felt licensing the name to Apple would just “muddy the waters.”

Now, Apple could obviously name the product iTV in the U.S. and leave it as Apple TV in the U.K. where ITV’s trademarks are filed, but this is something that the Cupertino company has yet to do.

It’s all rumors and hearsay at this point, but it would appear as though ITV is ready to rumble.

I think I mentioned that might be a probability the moment I read what they intended to name the beast.

Apple should really start thinking of more original product names. It’s “i” this and “i” that… and it’s usually a basic, lifeless word that the i is attached to, such as “phone”, “pad”, or “pod”. Products win points with clever and original names.

I still can’t get over the ‘iPad’ name. I thought the name was a joke at first. Seriously? That turtleneck is a little tight around Job’s neck.

One thing is for sure… I am a happy, proud and excited Apple share holder. They may do some questionable things but they do deliver, consistently.

Sent from my iPhone 4 without a bumper 0 dropped calls.

So what you’re saying is “as long as my pockets get fatter… anything goes”, right?

Sent from my PC, no bumper needed and never dropped a call.

    @ Tyler

That’s why you aren’t in marketing. Take a class or something. Simple works– what would you like it to be named Apple Tablet Envy… Oh wait HP makes that and it just sounds cheesy and cheap.

  • iamajim

so…..just why exactly is all of this icrap around? is everyone just following crApple in this (monkey see, monkey do)? even iGoogle for Gawds sake! does the i denote something i missed the memo on?

    • MikeD

Early years it was thought that i = internet.

      Probably now i = Integration/Integrated

  • Suspiro

If iFAILTV is available, Apple can go with that instead

  • jtarrio

Don’t forget iOS, another name Apple ripped off of Cisco…

  • motofooker

I hope ITV sues the beejebus out of crApple. Someone needs to kick Steve Jobs in his vagina.

    • Darren

@motofooker…now I know why he needed an iPad. Thanks.

Frankly I think iOS TV is a better name. That’s what it is…iOS on the tv. You’re putting apps and itunes and probably facetime on the television. iOS TV would avoid any trademark issues.

  • Jayrodathome

Quick.we should all start trade making things that begin with I so wet can make money off apple in the future. I’m changing my name to iJarrod and my dog ispot

  • Neo

Didn’t Apple called it, iTV when it first came out, then they changed the name to AppleTV? Why are they going to call it iTV again? And how come the didn’t get sued back then?

Like Apple will care. They don’t give a crap. Their fans don’t give a crap. Apple can say and do whatever they want and their fans will still kiss their as*es. As long as Apple makes their gadgets pretty.

This sort of thing has a long history with Apple Computer, now Apple Inc. They had a big consent agreement with the Beatles’ Apple Corps, saying that Apple wouldn’t go into music… that of course had to be edited itself later and caused more lawsuits.

  • James

Considering there is already “iO TV” out there I think iOS TV would also end up in court as being too close to an existing trademark.

  • Perspective

It’s a rumor people. You know, like how there’s a “rumored” Verizon iPhone, a “rumored” iPod Touch with a camera coming in 2009 and a “rumored” Evo 4G whose battery lasts for more than an hour at standby. Neither of those have come to fruition yet. Until there’s an actual product, the chatter here is meaningless.

Apple knows something you all don’t: Cisco makes more money off the licensing agreement with Apple than they do with the iPhone or iOS names, so when forced to either take the money or keep the rights, they take the money. It’s really not complicated.

  • USA!!

apple is NOT a US electronics maker, the electronics they sell are NOT made in the US

  • wanderer

I-whatever, it sells, so why would apple change a successful formula. Every company has a trademark and the “I” is synonymous with apple.

Apple do not care who or what they trample on. Other companies, consumers, suppliers, copyright, ideas, it is all the same to Apple. They just take, take, take.

It started with their name when they lifted the work Apple from The Beatles, then the just took the iPhone name from Cisco.

They sell underfunctioned, overpriced crap to users.

    WHEN WILL YOU ALL LEARN?

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY — EVER.

Actually the Apple name was an homage to Sir Issac Newton not lifted from the Beatles at all. Like many urban legends, this one about Apple ripping off the Beatles record company name is pure shit…

You can see the very first Apple logo here

@rederikus, Good luck trying to convince people not to buy anything apple. As far as their business practices, all big corporations do that if they get a chance including Google and they are all in the same boat. The big boys are laughing at all the trash talking that goes on on tech blogs such as this since it provides free publicity. if you hate apple, don’t go on apple posts making negative comments because it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, that being geeks on blog sites is only a tiny fraction of users and in no way represent the majority.

Talk is cheap. So are rumors. This is nothing but a rumor and nothing has been confirmed. Apple isn’t stupid, and the perfect example holds with them licensing the name iOS from Cisco Systems. Stop freaking out over nothing.

  • Sibahi

    iPod TV , anyone ?

    @JMR, here here!
