Google releases statement about Java suit, disappointed and ready to defend

General

Following up on a story we posted this morning, Google has released a statement in response to the lawsuit filed by Oracle over the search giant’s implementation of Java in Android. The statement looks like this:

We are disappointed Oracle has chosen to attack both Google and the open-source Java community with this baseless lawsuit. The open-source Java community goes beyond any one corporation and works every day to make the web a better place. We will strongly defend open-source standards and will continue to work with the industry to develop the Android platform.

As reported by USA Today, Oracle is, “seeking an injunction and unspecified damages,” although the suit is most likely “part of a larger negotiating effort by Oracle to land a sizable licensing fee.” Oracle has yet to release an official statement defending the merits of the suit.

Google didn’t license the Sun JVM because they wanted to give away their OS so manufacturers would use it, and didn’t want to pay a license fee to Sun.

Now that Android is a success they should cough up the cash, license Java, and start charging manufacturers for the OS.

Why should Google be given an unfair competitive advantage over other manufacturers?

This doesn’t hurt Java. It supports manufacturers who happily license the technology and pay for the privilege.

The merits will play out in court or in a nice licensing fee to Oracle. Java won’t be hurt by this one bit. Oracle is about the $$$$$$. Whether its overly complex software that requires $$$$$$ to develop, support and maintain or $$$$ to use their assets. They bought Sun, they get the booty and should leverage it to the benefit of their stockholders. Simple economics.

Yeah, looks like Oracle runs out of ideas how to make money :)
These are usual management ways: a) charge more or b) fire somebody.

Screw Oracle cash pigs!! They were waiting for this moment. Should all java developers start paying Larry Edilson money now? What is the lies behind open source???

Larry Ellison is a true Capitalist. To keep spirit of Capitalism alive, if he find someone giving things for free, he will buy it, like he bought Java. If he can not buy, he will sue them, like he is suing Google.

That is Larry’s path to become the richest man of the world once again.

“Should all java developers start paying Larry Edilson money now?”

Yes. If they make money from it – why not. Google stands to make billions of dollars in advertising revenue from Android users – which is why they created it in the first place.

Other companies license Java and therefore increase their costs, why should Google be the exception?

Most open source is backed by large corporations, seeking to create a market for their products by releasing “open source” to attract developers.

Google should pay up. The pity is that Android didn’t make it big soon enough for Sun to capitalise on their investment in Java.

Far from being an evil capitalist Larry Ellison is protecting the Java standard that has been blatantly violated by Google.

If they didn’t like the standard they could have created Java Specification Requests to have it brought up to date.

Other companies are using Oracle’s code. Google isn’t.

      Ha, good one.
