In honor of their one year App Store anniversary the company has temporarily cut the prices on their navigation offerings by fifty percent. The new pricing is as follows:

  • MobileNavigator USA: $24.99 instead of $49.99
  • MobileNavigator Canada: $29.99 instead of $59.99
  • MobileNavigator US MyRegion East, Central or West: $14.99 instead of $29.99, additional regions $11.99 instead of $14.99.

In-App Purchases:

  • Traffic Live: $12.99 instead of $24.99
  • Panorama View 3D: $4.99 instead of $9.99

This pricing is available from August 12th to the 15th, and you can find all the goods in the App Store if interested. Enjoy!

With android giving navigation away for free, these companies have no choice but to offer deep discounts to stay in business.

    • TorchSuckyEvoNooky

Damn straight. I’m all about the free shit.

      • Android

To all those saying you need offline maps. The only times that Google maps has gone out for me was when I lost Cell DATA reception. Happens only a couple of times a day, so no big deal, noobs. Free rules.

      • Android

and i’ve only got lost about 4 times in 5 months with the Droid. FREE, bitches!

      • Chris

Wow, you’re so awesome. Can I touch you?

      • Shane

Offline is necessary for international navigation. Data roaming charges would kill you if you try and navigate in Canada with the ‘free’ Android Maps app.

  • http://www.pyrofallout.com Pyrofallout

Anyone have any experience with both this and TomTom. I currently own the TomTom app and a TomTom dock (albeit which doesn’t work well with my iPhone 4). While TomTom app does do the job, I have heard really good things about Navigon. Is there any reason to switch over? If i was ever going to do it, now seems like the best time.

    • Android

Both of these “apps” are ridiculously large in size. Good luck installing these on your app storage space. They should both come with warnings.

      • Shane

The app is 1.5gb… my iphone has 10gb free out of 30gb total. Don’t think that space is really the issue.

      • Sam

Free space is definitely the issue. Just because you apparently have… not that much on your iphone, doesn’t mean we all have free space.

      • Tom

Installed fine on my 3GS and works great. Not sure what an “app storage space” is.

    • MS

it is a very well polished app. for someone who travels into non-3g or even no-signal areas, this thing is the only option for phone navigation.

i also have the live traffic (i believe inrix is the provider) and it works well in boston area. traffic rerouting saved me lots of time with all the recent constructions going on.

the interface is way better than tomtom imho but it probably comes down to personal preference.

      well worth the 40 bucks…

on a sidenote, i dont get the google navigation fascination…good for you if you’re fine with it for occasional navi but for constant use, nothing beats offline maps.

      • Eric

If you set Google Navigation when you set off into your trip, it doesn’t matter if you have service or not, it’ still works. I’ve traveled over 3000 miles from one side of Texas to the other several times using Google Maps and Navigation, and it has worked flawlessly with few issues (rare occasion that maps isn’t updated to show new construction).

Non-issue, nothing to see here, please move on.

      • MS

it’s a pretty big issue indeed…what if i need to navigate to a a new area and have no signal/poor to begin with? i think you missed the point…

if you have 3g everywhere you go and dont need the comfort of having the navi offline then good…different strokes for different folks

      • Sam

I have a gps in my car. :)

      • MicroNix

I guess if you are on the iNetwork getting a good signal can be an issue. Eric is right, you can plot your course and it will download it to your phone so there is no issue while driving. Used it to travel across the US this year and it worked flawlessly. Built in and free.

I used to be a TomTom fan, but I’ve grown to love the Navigon app. It’s simpler and Navigon seems determined to continue to add features @ a feverish pace that TomTom can’t seem to keep up with. You lose novelty things like different voices, but overall, I think it’s a better navigation app.

  • webby

Navigon is feelin’ the heat of Android …

  • WIZ

to me navigon is the best they broke my car and stole my stand-alone unit now navigon stopselling for the us so i am off to the app-store to see my old friend

  • Android

These stupid apps are more than 1GB to install. WTH. What a huge waste of space and money. And to spit in your coffee in a more heinous way, you can’t even expand the memory on an iPhone to hold these apps, so 90% of iPhone owners will pay for this, and have no room on their app storage space. LOL. ripoff.

    • MP

This is the dumbest statement I’ve heard all week

      • TorchSuckyEvoNooky

How is this dumb? Read some of the iTunes reviews.

    • Avg. Consumer

You don’t even own an iphone, stop speaking for those that do.

      • TorchSuckyEvoNooky

He’s just trying to warn consumers of the conjob of these apps that people can’t even install on their iPhones due to app storage constrictions.

      • Scotchua

Just because people are too stupid to realize that if you buy an app that says “1.5GB” that you’ll need at least that much space to run it, doesn’t make it a “conjob”

      • DInc

        Scotchua,

We are talking about iPhone users here. Enough said?

“i want the one with 8 gee-bees please”

      • Android

@DInc LOL. Idiots, huh? I hear that everywhere I go where people have iPhones.

    • Scotchua

You are an idiot, all map programs of this nature have huge maps, it is unavoidable. If you don’t have room for the app, why the hell would you buy it?

      • Mark

If you don’t have enough space on your phone, and you go to buy it from your phone, it won’t complete your purchase. Unfortunately I’ve been there. :) So the “idiots” are taken care of. I would say though, the only reason our phones are so full is cause the iphone is such a better media player ha ha… full ipod functionality, iphone 4 screen for movies… nice!

    • http://jordandev.info jordandev

It includes all of the maps so they don’t need to be streamed over a data connection. Which for a navigation app seems very useful if you happen to have a very poor connection in some places.

Due to streaming all of my music / videos I use I have plenty of space to install applications. So how is it a huge waste.

  • Teco221

There are free turn by turn apps for iPhone in App store, you know there are other tech companies other than Google.

    • MS

mapquest is free but only gives “due-north” 2d display..

waze is good but the maps and routing engine are mighty craptastic in my area.

skobbler is another and uses openstreetmap data…good luck if you’re out of a metro area.

    • Steve

MotionX GPS only free for 30 days, then turn-by-turn stops working.

  • AndrewinLA

I have the US app an it rocks!
I took out the $500 Garmin from my car.

When I had the Android (AT&T Captivate) it was great but when I got to an area with no signal the map did not refresh and I couldnt find the place till I drove back to area of coverage. I know this is AT&T’s fault for not having coverage.

But the Android navigation only works when you have 100% coverage on your route.

On my 16GB iphone 3GS the 1GB I used for it was well worth it.

On the 32 GB iphone 4 I dont even care.
On iphone 4 this app works even better since GPS signal picks up quick and the app starts up faster.

The Android is great for free but even if I kept the Captivate I’d still want an app that downloads the maps to the phone.

In Navigon the google search is great since if Google knows the address the GPS can get it.

Also the Around Me free app can launch navigon and put the address in the destination. Very nice. There are other apps that launch Navigon and enter address for you.

    • Brandon

you only need connection to get the route, after that you dont need data on the Android unless you need to reroute.

Not perfect but not quite as bad as you put it.

      • Android

Exactly. It’s only failed me a handful of times the past year. Nothing to cry about. Better than paying for something.

  • fz553

“(at this point all the Android users are smiling ear-to-ear)”

then at that point Nokia smart phone users must be smiling wider!! Free navigation with offline maps for even countries outside of N.America!! Beat that android lol.

    • therodt

Yeahhh, but there are distinct reasons why I dont have a Nokia wishlist…

    • MicroNix

Nokia? They sell those in America even? Nokia. I heard of them when cell phones first became small. Then they evolved into clunky dumb phones with huge icons. Even their smart phones look like something from the Windows 3.1 days. How they are the world leader in phones just totally baffles me.

  • wALdo

Have a Droid Incredible and use Navigation quite a bit. Been all over using GoogleNav and Canada using GoogleMaps. I think the offline GPS apps are still needed for travelers like myself and other occasional trippers who would need an offline app for the inevitable no signal/3g/Edge areas (which are a lot in this big ole USofA). I waited and waited for Navigon and TomTom to come out with their app to no avail. I settled with Co-Pilot although I would still buy Navigon if offered in their Android form.

    • Android

Why pay when you get it for free? Be smart!

    • Dirk

It is available so I really doubt you are a Android user.

      http://www.navigon.com/portal/int/shop/software/familie.html?produktFamilieId=22910

      • Dirk

By the way, it’s been out since March 12th.

        iFan much?

      • wALdo

try Montana and Wyoming sometimes and see where Google Navigation directs you when you are in the boondocks. I said Offline people…. jeeezz

      • wALdo

Navigon Android is only available in Europe for trials as of todate

    • therodt

I am always amazed at people going places with no coverage but correct me if I am wrong it gives you like the whole detail regardless right…I have been using Google maps for quite a while and never have lost coverage longer than 30 seconds but i just go to route info and generally it pops back up.I think the thing I like most is that it actually gets better almost every freaking month with some new feature..

  • utwarreng

What the Droid users aren’t thinking about is all of those maps they have to download, as the phone companies are moving away from unlimited data plans. Navigon/Tom Tom don’t have to download maps on the fly; they’re already there. Big plus for those without unlimited data plans.

Even though I do still have my unlimited data plan, I still appreciate not having to download the maps, as AT&T is dragging their feet on getting 3G in my area (2 months overdue from when they “promised” we would have the 3G tower now).

  • Matt

I don’t know how the hell they justify charging MORE for the Canadian version than the US version, but whatever. Just got my iPhone and have been waiting for this to come on sale.

  • D

Like the other poster stated, the iPhone has so much internal storage file size is a non-factor. Android phones don’t typically come with that amount of storage if ever.

I’m just stating the facts. What phone you use is your business.

    • wALdo

The new Droids have 8 gb internal and maxes out at 32 gb SD cards. That’s probably enough storage Eh?

      • D

I did say internal storage, which the new iPhone starts minimally 16GB internally. Again, once you have that much storage file size becomes a non-factor. It’s not to knock Android, but to explain to those complaining about file size.

  • Fernando

Well, if you’re on a limited data plan (2gb or 200mb) having all the maps stored on the device instead of streaming on the fly could save you in overages.

  • bob

it’s funny how these comments start and end. It usually starts with, “Wow xyz phone/feature/OS is really cool” then somehow it ends up something like “Godd@mn you stupid fanboy/fandroid f*ck! Get out of your grandmothers basement and stop smoking all of her prescription weed! And what do Jerrys kids have to do with how fast my Internet connection is when Im in Seattle?”

points and laughs at all the iphone people, good thing im not one anymore, im happy with my captivate its way cooler than my iphone 4 that i took back a day after i got it.

    • MikeD

Keep laughing and enjoy your captivate, But BGR screwed up this article.

Map Quest 4 for the iPhone has been FREE and gives TURN-BY-TURN. So no, iPhone users do not have to pay for Turn by turn.

Map Quest 4 is also available for Blackberry too.

      http://wireless.mapquest.com/mapquest-4-mobile/

      That is all.

      • MikeD

By the way Just did some research. If specifically you want that Navigator view on your iPhone. You can get the best deal with MapQuest Navagator. Its priced at 99 cents.

But you can get Turn by turn GPS applications for free on on the iPhone.

    • Android

Word. First thing I did with my captivate was fix the lag.

  • bob

    @Legion,
Amen! Today’s word of the day is “DEFENESTRATE”. As in “I will defenestrate my iPhone once iPony up the cash for a Droid X”.

International travel and hiking where there is no cell ohone signals are the big reasons for offline maps. Google’s free Android navigation is cool, but when in Canada you’ll pay a fortune in international data roaming charges. With a offline app, it will still navigate even in Airplane mode, so you get no charges at all. And it will keep tracking you while you’re hiking in Yosemite or someplace with no signal. Android’s free app can’t do that.

    • Android

Nobody needs to have nav software everywhere they go. You can always get paper maps for places with no signal or whatever.

  • MacMan

All the droid Fanboys are slow. There isn’t a droid out there that works “well” with a 32gb card.

I’m glad you guys get free navi that’s great. I guess they have to make up for everything else you don’t have huh ? With your huge crappy screens, droids are for kids. Didn’t you see that star wars edition haha

    • MicroNix

LOL, MacDrone. Look at the iPhone 4 new magical “features” that Android phones already had. The new search commands released today for Android 2.2 is something you’ll probably see SJ copy for iOS5 too. Google is innovating and Apple is copying. I’m so glad you iPhone people are now able to utilize wallpaper. Wow, that’s pretty advanced stuff…hahaha…wallpaper after 3 generations of iPhones. Go on and tell us what phones are for kids.

      • MacMan

Face time and media features rape any android phone. So yeah . Sorry but qik calls suck, and wow a search commands are your serious ? Or how about live wallpapers that kill your battery ? Nice !!

      • Mr. Bill

lol, at my shop, everyday, the iphone crowd plugs in their phones at noon.

Poor signal=poor battery life, and it shows.

I should tell them to just go into airplane mode, seems a lot iphone users are accustomed to it anyways.

So it is kind of funny about airplane mode, as if they don’t go into it when the signal degrades, they’d have no power left to run anything else without, plugging in again.(Some wireless)

        Big win lol.

      • MacMan

If your surfing web all day of course any phone is gonna be dead by noon.

  • Keymaker

It’s nice to have a free navigation app on your phone but it’s also good to have different choices like what the Apple store offers, Tom Tom, Navigon, and a bunch more.

  • Vik

I have an iPhone but I dont use it (as in I dont have a SIM – use my BB) .. can I use this app purely as a GPS receiver?
Or do I need a data plan?
    Thanks.

  • DoH

Forget this. I just installed the *FREE* MapQuest 4 Mobile app on my iPhone. Talking turn-by-turn directions…FREE. Check it out!
