Full-price Dell Streak still SIM-locked to AT&T, what did you want for $549

General

So sad. Your boy “Lionel at Dell” has tweeted to let you know that just because you paid full-retail price for a Dell Streak — $549 — that doesn’t mean you can take it to any network you want. The tweet reads:

Lots of folks are asking about the $549 version of #dellstreak. To be clear, it will not be unlocked. It is SIM-locked to AT&T.

There were hopes that since Dell, a third-party manufacturer, was also selling the phone via its online store paying $549 might score you an unlocked version. But alas… not. Anyone disappointed by this, or was it what you were expecting?

But at the end who cares? Who’s going to pay 549 for an akward device running 1.6 and only get edge service? Seriously?

    • Topher86

      you still get 3G

Ok let me make myself clear. The only people who care about it still being locked to AT&T even if you buy it outright are presumably those that want to use it on another network. Otherwise, why would they care? Now, having said that, why would anyone pay 549 for this unlocked and then try to use it on t-mobile. Definitely not worth it. Clearer now?

      Gets 3G on AT&T :-S

Which is what it is locked to

lol so he says, hackers get to… well, hacking.

    Nope, totally expected this.

Dell = Fail in the mobile world

  • DHarder

Um, no. You cannot have it both ways and that certainly frosts me. Next phone for me is likely an unlocked Android phone — for a reason. Dell: Don’t be Apple.

Dell should stay out of mobile business. One must be really stupid to pay $549 for a locked version of the phone!!. No discount on ATT plans, all that restrictions, and running 1.6..forget it

  • Salim

LOL another reason NOT to get this phone

Good question? I got it at $299 for that reason. I can always root it and i’m ok with at&t service so oh well. Why are so many people bitching when other carriers and manufacturers do the same thing? For example, last I checked, verizon won’t allow apps like slingbox on their network. Apple puts you back in jail as soon as you plug your jailbroken iphone up to a computer for an update. Maybe I’m wrong but at&t and Dell aren’t doing anything new here. Americans want phones cheap, reliable and have never had a taste for truly unlocked phones. Unlike the overseas markets where unlocked phones rule.

I was disappointed at first cuz i considered buying it but yea it makes me laugh now cuz thats a joke decision by Dell. Android 1.6 and no 720p? Hurry the fuck up. Never buying anything from Dell, same with HP.

  • Cmc

Google did it right with the nexus one. Totally unlocked, unhacked, and completely unrestricted.

  • Jay

Why would AT&T let you buy a phone exclusive to their network, then let you take it elsewhere. I wonder if I can buy the Droid X outright, then use it on Sprint…

  • Eric C

I thought there was a law or something that said if you buy a phone outright or if your contract is up they have to supply you with the unlock code? I do remember that AT&T did unlock a razor phone for me when my contract was up.

  • steve

The decision to sell the retail version still locked to ATT is plain out stupid. Business and professional power users like me would have been able to use it in a flexible manner, even with sim cards abroad.. the phone has a good hardware and software will improve.. but contractual lockdowns are just not in the interest of the end-user !

So my question is… If I have an iphone3GS with the unlimited data service, and I just wanted to buy the streak for kicks, COULD i just pull the sim out of my iphone and pop it in the streak to use as my new device? Mind you, i’m already paying $$$$ for my friggin iphone plan anywho and didn’t plan on resigning a new 2 year, paying $550. for this Dell device is steep, but what isn’t….

  • http://dellstreakhacks.com dell streak

dell is releasing a 7′ and 10′ version of the dell streak. I already have the 5′ streak. I wonder if they will let me upgrade for free.

  • Staticalexis

Disgusted, $549 and they at&t still owns my phone. I just want froyo wtf.

Oh yeah, and count on AT&T to ruin it even more. When I thought it couldn’t get any worse, AT&T pulls through once again to do so.
