Dell Thunder prototype gets photographed, 4.1-inch Android device

Rumor

The folks over at Engadget were sent images (Mr. Blurrycam style) of the unannounced and unreleased Dell Thunder. The Thunder is reportedly an Android 2.1 full touch-screen device with a 4.1-inch screen (possibly OLED), 8 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, 800 x 480 resolution, and a 1400 mAh battery. No details were given about the processor speed or internal storage of the newly photographed device. Hit the read link to check out a few more images and a quick video.

Good screen size. Good resolution. Lousy battery. But completely stock Android. Hmm…looks promising if an affordable extended battery is in the works.

    Nice!

    Anymore info?

Um, I can immediately see that this device is running Android 1.5 or 1.6. I can tell by the way the app drawer icon looks, as well as by the web browser icon. The browser icon is labeled “Browser”, not “Internet” like it is in 2.x, and the icon itself is older. If Dell actually tries to release yet another Android device with Android 1.x, it will be an instant fail. I mean really, with most people on 2.1, and going crazy while waiting for 2.2, do you honestly think anyone will want to go anywhere near a new device that’s stuck at 1.6?

      You sir, are incorrect.

Take a look at the Messaging/Contacts icon, it’s a dead giveaway. The device is definitely running 2.1

I know this, because I’ve had a MyTouch 3g since it was released and have dealt with 1.5 and 1.6 for a very long time. I JUST recently rooted and put 2.1 on it, which is why the icons give it away.

Those icons are definitely 1.6. Plus the slide up app drawer is the dead give away.

@ Brad – My Nexus One say “browser” but the browser icon on any “2.x” should be Gray & Blue in color not Green & Blue.

      • Brad

Okay, apparently the name of the web browser icon varies a bit, but yeah, the icon is still wrong.

Is it me, or do the icons look tiny, even for a 4.1″ screen?

    • Topher86

High resolution? Even though it’s report at being 800×480, over on Engadget they did say the tipster and themselves have a feeling the resolution is higher than that. Could be?

    @Brad
what are you smoking? That is defiantly stock 2.1 android with no skin and what android phone do you have because my droid x defiantly says browser not internet…

    • Brad

I have a Droid Eris. Apparently renaming the browser from “Browser” to “Internet” is an HTC Sense UI thing, but the fact remains that the icon is still the browser icon from pre-2.0, as is the app drawer button.

Meh another evo – droid x

  • Iron

    Total fail

  • AusFest

I think for something this size there should be room for 5 applications per line. Streching the line out to only fit 4 makes for to much travel.

  • RaZoRxJeT

Complete fail unless that battery life is someh.ow extended

Keep in mind this is just a developer unit, the tipster, who posted in the comments of the Engadget post, noted that it is by no means final in any regard software wise. As for the 1.6 vs 2.1 battle, they tipster reported 2.1 so I will trust their judgement over blurrycam speculation.

There’s no way that screen is 480×800. Looks much higher rez.

  • MikeD

Looks like a typical Android device. Is Dell going to throw in some sort of branding to give it some uniqueness. Lit Moto Blur or HTC Touch flo?

  • Andre

Are people still arguing over the icons belonging to one version of android or another?
What you people are seeing there is probably just the base version of android that they’re using to port Dalvik to the hardware then they’ll upgrade it after without much fuss.

  • wtf

Bgr’s pics looks to be 1.6., but engadgets pics have Adobe flash in the pull up menu. Maybe same phone different time pics one when was running 1.6 and the rest running stripped down 2.2

gee you think by putting a pic of a Leopard that people will *think* of Apple and buy that hunk of junk!?!

It looks nice but i don’t think it will override Droid X. I am saying Droid X because they probably address to an even sized phone.
