Samsung Captivate over-clocked to run at 1.2 GHz

General

It looks as though your friends over at xda-developers have successfully over-clocked the processor in the Samsung Captivate — AT&T’s version of the Galaxy S — to run at a full 1.2 GHz. The new kernel has several hiccups, including a small lag at boot, and will definitely void your warranty. If you want to take a walk on the wild side, and potentially see your Captivate spontaneously combust, hit the read link and give it a whirl. Let us know if you have any success, ok?

So it’s both faster AND slower at the same time? Strange.

  • DaHarder

This is really ‘nice’ and all, but…

Samsung’s Galaxy S handsets are already so friggin’ fast that this all seems a bit ‘excessive’, and certainly not worth risking one’s warranty.

Welcome to the world of tech…heavily under rated risk taking community.

  • That’s an increase of almost nothing…

    • Matt Thompson

      Yeah, 20% is almost 0%.

      • ya the “start up lag and several other hiccups”, the voided warranty, the possibility of spontaneous combustion is SO worth 20% …

      • Jason

don’t forget your chargers and extra batteries and the case that holds all of those things and a back pack to holds the case that holds all those things.

The fastest piece of crap evaaaar!!

Sorry, my hatred for Samsung auto over rode my self control….

    • walt

So what you’re saying is that you haven’t used one.

  • xmeatizmurderx

That’s great in how early it’s been made, but highly unnecessary. Hopefully they will have a stable 1.5 kernel ready by Q2 next year when everything is just catching up to it’s stock processing power. The galaxy s line of phones are amazing and will remain top of the line for a lot longer than every other phone that is coming out in the foreseeable future.

If the Samsung S is as fast as the Droid X, then I would rather someone figure out how to underclock rather than overclock. Battery savings for the win.

    • Celz

Im pretty sure the Galaxy S is faster than Droid X, Evo 4G, and iPad

    • ViniD

Captivate automatically lowers the CPU when its not needed.

    • Jason

Love it when Droid fan boys bash at BB for lower CPU speed but on this chat some are finding ways to under-clock their phones to conserve the battery life.

I guess the next question on this chatter is how do I shrink my Iphone or Droid screen size or lower the resolution to save the battery life.

  • brianw

Umm… bobba, the droid x can be underclocked, very easily…

  • WalterSobchak

    so first the lag fix
    http://www.androidguys.com/2010/08/10/click-lag-fix-galaxy-phones/
    then this
    then 2.2
Those galaxy s phones are going to have some ridiculously high benchmark numbers

  • Mrwirez

My original Droid is running 1.1Ghz.. they can get a little strange at times.. HEAT!

  • drypulse

can you overclock it to put a flash on the camera?

    • WalterSobchak

      Standard android rule: avoid at&t
Vibrant has a flash, epic and fascinate will have flash
Now why would they not put a flash on the at&t version? Or a ff cam?
Almost like they don’t want to anger apphole. Is that the company you want to get an android with?

      • dario

Because full flash support is on Android 2.2. Captivate is at 2.1.

      • Michael S

The Vibrant does not have a flash. Epic and Fascinate will.

      • walt

Vibrant doesn’t have a flash. It also doesn’t have a ff camera. So your comments are pretty much worthless. They’re getting the X10 at the end of the week which has an 8mp with flash. Oh, and the Dell Streak which has a 5mp with flash and a ff camera.
Yeah, they don’t wanna piss off Apple. They seem really worried about that these days. Yes, that was sarcasm.

I just want stick froyo with a custom ROM… CYANO ANYONE?

  • Panagiotis Govotsos

Sounds nice, but I’ve been running my 500 MHz Palm Pre Plus at 1.2 GHz for a while. The Homebrew community is amazing!

  • vibrant

Is the captivate having lagging issues like the vibrant is too? My vibrant is rooted and stripped down and is still laggy. and no it has nothing to do with t-mobile’s network. haha. Just wondering if the galaxy s series is flawed or not.

    • bob

but .. why bother? mine works just fine

    • ViniD

My captivate is been workin perfect after rooting, check out some of the xda forums. You might have alot of stuff running in the background.

      • vibrant

yeah i did all that. a master reset made it a little better. my biggest gripes are photo gallery freezing and market place stalling

  • iamajim

I’m sorry Walter but I must correct you; it’s crApple but now that I think about it crApphole has a nice ring to it, or maybe crApplehole….my goodness I’m getting dizzy just thinking of these hahahaha

  • Legion

i took my iphone 4 back and got this phone i love it, i dont know about overclocking this thing it seems speedy enough,

  • Techsican

I’m after the Froyo update before I root my Captivate. I love my phone, but I have noticed some lag lately. I think its due to the workaround I had to do to bypass the Exchange password issue. Overall it’s still pretty fast. I can’t wait for the Froyo update!!!!
